i didn't have time to brag before i scored the ticket, but i saw radiohead last night for the first time. outdoors, golden gate park, surrounded by trees, just after dark. it was beautiful.

i heard they had all kinds of trouble with their sound?

yeah, i think a few heads probably rolled as a result of those troubles the sound cut out completely during two songs - first for airbag (tragic!) and then again for even longer during all i need. for $85/ticket one might expect a bit more professionalism, but i was stoked anyway. here's the setlist:

i love "in rainbows" so i was perfectly happy about the quantity of newer material. the section of songs 11-16 alone made the show worth it for me. 20-22 was also a powerful series of familiar greatness. i heard some complaints about their decision to close with everything in its right place but i thought it was awesome. their lights were fantastic as well. two thumbs way up for my first live radiohead experience

I saw the fucking Stooges last night, and the sound was so low it was like listening to someone playing a record of the Stooges in the next room. While an old guy jumped around naked in front of you.

So annoyed . We need a thread for 'quietest band ever'.

Saw Andrew Bird free in Millennium Park, Chicago, earlier this week. It was fantastic. I hadn't seen the guy live in so long but as soon as he started wailing on his violin it was as if I never left that first concert I saw with AmorRoark about 3 years ago.

He played some opening songs alone and then his band came out. I have to say I enjoy Bird alone or with the accompaniment of Dosh on drums, but thats it. The band was still great, the show was still marvelous, but I really do not need any other sounds other than those which Bird produces, music from additional guitarists or bassists just distracts. There were many more songs throughout the night that were more solo-Bird though, so it evened out for me.

Really a fantastic show though, Bird is still humble, charming and very funny on stage and truly a musical virtuoso of great, great talent. Love him!

Okkervil River was great! I was really impressed with how tight their sound was. Everyone seemed pretty into the show as well. The Bottleneck is a great place for a show. I'm so glad I live close enough to Lawrence to see shows there.

It was the girl standing next to me's birthday so I bought her a drink and then she bought me one which was evidentially too much for her. She was alone and I felt bad so I ended up having to sort of help her walk out of there after the show was over which was kind of annoying but other than that, great time.

big star is my 8th favourite show of all time:

i'm amazed how many us bands report having been influenced by big star and yet how few people i meet in the us who have even heard of them. everybody's heard the theme tune to 'that 70s show'? it's 'down the street' by big star.

alex chilton is one of my songwriting heroes. big star fell apart in the late 70s due to the depression and untimely death of chris bell but original members alex chilton and jody stephens got together with a couple of the posies in 1993 and toured as big star. it was a night of sublime, jangly pop beauty which put my love affair with teenage fanclub in a wider context and reminded me what a great writer and performer chilton is.

so jealous! sounds quite amazing

here, you should check these out. It's basically him walking around the Montmartre in Paris with his violin, singing and being filmed. Totally guerilla, must have been pretty awesome to see in person.

also, this site has about 90 other sessions along the same lines. A lot in there that is great.

i know this is 'brag about an upcoming show' but i want to brag about these: saw Broken Social Scene at the Sunset Junction on Aug. 23rd, Bon Iver a few weeks ago and i saw DeVotchKa last night. all were exceptional shows. they were how live shows are supposed to be in my opinion, a furthering experience; more connective than listening to it in your car.

next week is Fleet Foxes.

I saw Opeth last night for the third time. The setlist was AMAZING. Here's a crappy photo from the show:

I was right up against the railing for three-fourths of the show. My neck still hurts from headbanging so much.

man, the lips piss me off because they are always one step ahead
State of Mind: Sleep deprived for 3-4 days (insomnia), smoked some headies... mentally and physically exhausted by the time the show started.

This concert kicked ass. Seeing the Flaming Lips was definitely the best part of All Good.

They opened with huge words on a big screen behind them, surrounded by trippy graphics:

and so on. I wasn't even tripping but my mind was already blown as they did a long intro segued into Race for the Prize. What a great song to open a concert with! Good thing I was seeing the Flaming Lips and they wrote that song :D

Then, Bohemian Rhapsody. It kicked ass.

Then FIGHT TEST! Fuck yeah! If you know the Flaming Lips live you know they play everything *perfectly*, but its like better than listening to the album because they put on a trippy show with lots of lights, smoke, cool imagery,... it's just badass. By now I was actually dancing around. And I was tired as hell. 4 days without sleep, man!

They played Yoshimi and encouraged the crowd to sing along, which I gladly did .. they stretched out that song pretty long!

Then The Spark That Bled. I fuckin love this song! Especially the part that's like "I stood up and I said hey... I stood up and I said yeah... I stood up and I said heyyyy... yeah!:

It fuckin rocks brah.

Then, "She Don't Use Jelly".... vaaaaaaaseline! Dudes and dudettes, can you comprehend how excellent The Flaming Lips are in concert yet? It's really quite excellent.

Next thing I remember... "Do You Realize??"

Holy shit, my good friends, I love this song. Attempt to comprehend my glee.

Then they talked some shit about Bush and played "War Pigs". Hahahahaha.... suck it George!
