bluelight music production 2002

its not the gear u use, its what you do with it.
good gear wont make a shit artist sound good.
just go and have fun with whatever you have.
we didnt start off with a rack full of gear, infact it was the complete opposite consisting of primitive trackers. with all these decent programs available today u guys have it extraodinarily easy and shouldnt complain...

snrub - had a listen to "i broke my md", pretty cool but the track seems a little basic. its like its missing something. nice breaks though, and the breakdown sounded good. but just seems to need something else, its like it never really gets going.
my 2 cents.

My current setup:
Roland Juno 106 (well HS-60 actually, but they are pretty much the same)
Roland Super Jupitor MKS-80
Jomox Airbase 99
Analog Delay
Homemade spring-reverb
4 track for a mixer!
Logic Audio Platinum 4.8
What I would like:
A decent mixer
Some monitor speakers
A good computer to run softsynths etc
Some motivation to write some music instead of just pissing around with different sounds!
Planning on producing some funky psytrance kinda sounds. Also play guitar and mess around with a lot of other instruments that I will probably never really get far with!

few juno 106's in the trading post by the way, and at mel music in Ormond. prices 700-1200.
money better spent on more useful gear, but if old roland gear is your thing...

does nobody like the bluelight compilation cd idea? quite frankly i thought it was one of my better ideas... i thought everyone would have liked the way snrub thought on that one ;)

Thought I'd bumpz0r this, my production skills are getting uber-phat :)
Just gotta wait till I get my tax return, then I get hardware, then I go berzerk stylez. :D
You can check out some of my crap down there...
VVVVVVVVVVVVV

nice one dante, this thread moves pretty slow.
whats everyone doing at the moment?
personally ive been doing heaps of experimentation with all sorts of whacked out techniques. I've just about finished upgrading my studio so expect some gigs again soon.
horsey, hows it coming along?
we all know tars is a slack arse ;)

THIS IS LONG (SORRY) BUT HELP NEEDED & WOULD BE APPRECIATED....
Alright there guys just been doing some back tracking through old threads and ran in to this one, firstly a big thumbs up it was just what I was looking for doing a bit of a search does pay off.
I'll start off letting you in on a bit of info on me. I'm 20 years old & currently working as Draftsman in Perth. I have decks and get into a bit of mixing mainly house/breaks but have no specific background (education) in music. My passion for quality music started at a young age but due to mainly financial reasons have been unable to venture into a music/audio based career.
I'm currently thinking of biting the bullet and searching for a job which I have a passion for and makes me happy instead of settling for the $$.
I've been looking into Audio Engineering / Sound Production which is offered @ JMC Acadamy in Melbourne/Sydney.
1) Does anyone attend any of the above courses ?who would be willing to provide any knowledge on pre-reqs, compettitveness of the course etc.
2) Do any of you producers work as producers ? what other jobs are availabe in this field.
3) It will be a big step moving to Sydney or Melbourne by myself is there anyone with similar experiences that could share any advice ?
Thank You in advance Chris

hi h@ndo,
ok firstly DO NOT throw away whatever u are doing now!!! seriously, you'll really regret it. The way to do it is to keep music on the side and if one day u are fortunate and good enough to go at it full time than do so but until that point, dont even think about giving up your current job and moving interstate for it.
I devote insane amounts of spare time to music and sound design + do the occasional gig and production work for musos but unless you are doing regular work for high profile clients or youre signed by sony music ;) dont expect to make it a full time occupation.
Regarding the academy, Mr_Horse is doing a sound production course at RMIT which is similar except the cost isnt so big and the facilities arent as extensive.
and about competitiveness in the field, it depends which particular aspect you are looking at but all in all its a highly competitive area.
Something you have to keep in mind is that the information you need is there if you look for it, you dont have to take expensive courses unless you want to have a "certificate". Start with the net. then go to a bookshop or newsagency and find some mags or books that contain info on whatever aspect of sound production you need. You'll notice that once you pick up the technical terms, the rest is simply common sense.

Cheers KompleX great advice I knew there were plenty of intelligent people around here you just got to know what threads to contribute to. hehehaha.
Just outa curiosity what do you do for a living ?
I really hate what I'm doing at the mo and knew it isn't as easy as doing a couple of courses and then bam got a job as a producer but I was hoping there would be some other job oppertunities in the audio field. ie: editing, programming, working in T.V or radio ya know just looking to submerge myself in the field (it's one of my only passions and/or intrests)
Do you know of any ?
It's so hard being young trying to find a path to follow I just want to be happy you know. I'm not one to crave materialistic things.

I've also done a search on sound production but always seem to run into site with such technical based language I find it hard for beginners like myself to understand most of it if you have any tips on mags, sites etc which are a good place to start that would be much appreciated.
Cheers geeza.

I know what its like to hate your job, the way i look at it is that the stuff i like (music) balances the stuff i dont and thats part time chemical warehousing and studying. I think you need some sort of balance to stay sane hehe. otherwise you take the good for granted.
All the occupations youve mentioned aren't that easy to get into because they are pretty full, hard to come by or u need to know people who know people who know even more people. And then u need to be good and have experience which is the catch 22. its hard to get experience if u arent employed in the field, the courses might give a bit of leverage here.
I'd jump at the opportunity to get a sound job in film and tv. especially tv. even mixing the nightly news would be good ;)
The thing about all the technical terms is that you have to bear with them. Eventually you'll figure out what they mean because you'll get bits of info here and there.
magazines will use these terms but sometimes may have definitions for them.
some mags to check out are Sound on Sound, Future Music, Next Music, Audio Technology and so on.
some websites to check out would be (not exactly sure what you need tho):
http://www.tweakheadz.com/how_to%20articles.html
http://www.futureproducers.com/forums/ (message board)
http://www.intermusic.com/defaultfeaturearchive.asp?FeatureType=TUT
http://www.dancetech.com/aa_dt_new/index.cfm
If you get into any technical terms that u dont understand/cant pickup just ask on a message board.
Also, note that theres heaps of adds all over the net/magazines from gear/software manufacturers trying to hype their shit. if u need to purchase anything, make sure you check out user reviews and ask around before you buy. theres often good deals in the trading post or on ebay.

yes, things seem to move in cycles here ;)
music is going well, more brushing up on technique at the mo in regards to audio theory and recording etc...
Protools is my bitch.
hondo: any questions regarding courses down here, send me an email and i'll attempt to answer any questions.
komplex: wanna do a professional recording down at the studio? good experience for me, and you get an A-grade recording out of it.
If you're interested send me an email.
horse :)
