my favorite genre bar none.
 
Yep, they got some good shit in that genre. Also don't forget Death Metal (in all it's forms). Nowadays I'm mostly into Melodeath. But basically I like all music that is good... ;)

The latest Marduk album Rom 5:12 is fucking good; I was getting bored of the constant blastbeat and Legions slightly monotonic voice. Imago Mortiis is a truly twisted song, almost psychedelic.....

Enslaved- Ruun: while it doesn't have really any Blackmetal, besides the vocals at times, it is easily their best album. They have really honed a progresive sound, with the Viking metal thing somehow not being obnoxious with enslaved.

Darkthrone- F.O.A.D (Fuck off and die)- easily their best album to date. More punk then metal (of course with fucking mindcrushing production ala typical Darkthrone)...some really good black-rock-puck-metal stuff.

Mayhem- Ordo Ad Chao: not their best I don't think, the production cuts so much highfrequencies, its almost pointess, I liked Chimera and De Mysteriis a lot lot more; I'm going to see them soon which should be fucking scary :):)

Besides that, I really like Negura Bunget from Romania, they have gotten steadily better, playing pagan, foresty music- not too distorted, but occaisonally some of the fastest blastbeating I've heard. Not many newer acts have appealed to me; Deathspell Omega, Blut aus Nord, Striborg, Wolves in the Throne Room- all very good, more pagan and nature influenced then satanic, with ambient touches.

I don't tend to bother with much BM besides from the early groups; 1349 and Dimmu Borgir etc all suck IMO, simply cause I prefer black metal nice and raw and primitive. Immortal are absolute legends, I saw them in Melbourne about two months ago- scarily well done.

Lol, I always end up ranitng on and on about black metal.....I guess this is the spot for it :)

Easy. Black metal is good, death metal is shit :p =D

Nah- alright, traditional black metal is noted for less palm muting, as is found in death metal, more open strumming of chords besides just powerchords, fuzzy distortion, horrific production, shrieking vocals as opposed to deep growls, badly mixed synths and typically Satanic/pagan/occult themes. I think most modern death metal- melodic death metal I guess- has borrowed heavily from black metal of the 90's, what with the higher vocals, more blastbeating, soaring, folky melodies....I mean all that stuff was done by the Norweigan scene 15 years ago- just kinda craply ;)

Put on a track by Deicide who are blackened death and then Emperor, as Swerz mentioned, and you can simply hear the difference.

On the subject of emperor, I must say I only liked their demo/EP with Enslaved and In The Nightside Ecipse....got a bit annoying after that, Anthems was nice though but inconsistent.

I love depressing black metal <3 I'll check em out for sure.

But Negura Bunget are the best new BM band.

And I fucking hate the NSBM stuff, like Nokturnl Mortum. Fucking dicks, dragging politics into music....The band summoning were recently compelled to make a press statement after various music by them was played to Neo-nazi footage on YouTube....its an interesting statement the head guy from Summoning makes.
 
Its that time of the month for another spontaneous black metal thread to hatch itself into being? word.


Summoning would have an appeal to the sort of bored outlier teens that make up neo-NS crowds because NSBM has a strong tie-in with old-world nationalism and medieval throwbacks, strong themes for summoning. Theres this whole ancient warrior tribe ideal and all that arcane Tolkein-centered dark symphonic shit summoning makes fits in well with the fairy tale. To my knowledge neither they nor their brother band Abigor have ever supported actual NS stuff. Its heathenistic or whatever but theyve never given a shit about politics, not thru their music at least. I think there is a strong correlation between that aesthetic and NS scenes due to bands like graveland and all those polish bands that have this whole idea of decentralizing and reverting to pre-christian ethnocentric tribal communities and running around with swords and mail.

oh, and summoning fuckin slays.
 
i really liked ordo ad chao. the production is godly. sounds like a cassette. phaser is sweet. they're in the zone now. they cut the fat and the goofy shit and are doing it straight up. the return of attilla is a bonus too. such a tight band now, probably the best traditional bm going on.

shining iv was good. deathspell omega are still kicking ass. dodheimsgard are cool (like 666 better than the new one tho). other than that, i haven't heard much lately. too busy with DM :D

Oh man, I liked the album (Ord Ad Chao) musically, but the production simpy ruined I thought....I love Hellhammers drumming, which you can barely hear. But yeah, I think its all tape compressed, so they got what they went for. I preferred Maniac (I think that was him) on vocals, but I think one of the other members smashed his face in or somesuch. :) Lovely chaps...

Yeah, check out the website for an interesting 'rebuttal' to their Nationalist claims. Its intersting to think that a lot of these groups- Ukranians, Polish, Romanians- were heavily persecuted by Hitler, and indeed their cultures were aimed for extinction. In norway, Hitler raised some Odinistic Nationaltistic pride to get them 'on side', but besides that- he was pretty Christian :\ in name only I guess. I fucking hate the NSBM stuff- totally makes me laaugh at the genre to be honest; but I REALLY hate the way folk/Viking bands and websites are being forced to defend themselves for writing songs about their cultures simply because of a few stupid artists. Unfortuantely, Nokturnal Mortum are quite good, whereas Graveland is shit. As a principle I don't own or listen to any of that music.

And yeah, Summoning are fucking great. I love the deep, dark percussion smashing through the songs...nice! :)
 
most NSBM is trash, I hate it's lyrics, and message. But some "NSBM" bands I dig, Absurd, early nokturnal mortum, hate forest...
 
^Hate forest are Druidkh now- a pretty good musical act, but fucked up basically. I just wont listen to that shit.

Xasthur- usually crap, but his latest is good; Subliminal Genocide, really quite eerie and ambient...but ruined y the production.

I highly reccommend I- Between Two Worlds (Basically Immortal under a new name) really rocking music, different vocals, but still with the icy Immortal feeling. Got members of Enslaved in it I believe, and Immortals original drummern ( he looks a bit like Elvis :)). And yay, they've lost the corpsepaint! No fast-blast beats, not really black metal- more progressive blackdeathicenebularfrost music.
 
immortal,emperor,old dimmu borgir,1349,belphagor(which is like black metal and death metal mixed)darkfuneral.those are the black metal i like and some select songs from other black metal bands.im more into death metal.and weakling really sucks well the vocals are the worst thing i have ever heard but i cant say that much about them because the guy from the fucking champs is in that band and the fucking champs rule(the band is not called the champs its the fucking champs im not just throwing in the fucking)
 
Meh, I think a lot of black metal is overrated.

I really like some of the orchestral qualities in some of it, but for the most part the guitar work and drumming just lacks the pure force and originality that other genres tend to have.
 
^Listen to early black metal, from around 1990-95. Nearly every metal genre has completely ripped it off. The proliferation of blastbeats, screechy vocals, orchestral and folk instruments, viking/pagan/folk/dark themes, pretty much originated with black metal. I don't like many modern groups, as they just basically rip off the oldies, but the oldies are great. Immortal have influenced so many metal bands.....basically, name a metal band and I'll show you the black metal parts!

I think a lot of it has to do with when you heard it- I was about 10 in 1993 and strted listening then, when it was relatively new. Completely blew me away....

edit: I must say, I hate orchestras in Blackmetal. I prefer it fast and simple.
 
Black Metal has a lot of unintentional comedy to it. I mean they are SO serious; It's pretty moronic. I actually do like some of the songs but I get more entertainment out of their videos in the forest carrying axes and wearing shit from a hardware store.

When I was in 7th grade I had Venom's 'Black Metal' album (that's how it got it's name if your wondering). That album scared the hell out of me. Upside down crosses and blatantly Satanic. I really felt I was going against God.

Now It's funny and some of the stuff does rock out a bit
