Black metal!?

The new album from Ihsahn (vocalist/guiatrist/synthplayer for Emperor and others) called Angl is very good, nice organic feeling production, complex and melodic riffs- some blackmetal stuff still in there with the vocals and some dark lyrics, but theres a lot of clean singing and acoutsic passages, as well as a song co-written and sung by Michael from Opeth. Good stuff to hear an old-blackmetal guy moving on, and well too.

I mean if there is a Satan than there must be a God no?? I mean it's the same BS only in reverse.

^Just don't buy into the political shit. Black metal, or at least overtly satanic blackmetal is just boring; its the bands that have developed, like Ulver and to a much lesser extent, Enslaved that are good...and always have. Or just a band like Darkthrone, who still sound preety much like they did 20 years ago, just more punky...at least they always had a good sound. Theistic satanism is little more then a bad joke; I do however find it intriguing that bands such as Therion are very much actual occultists, yet the real blackmetalllers are generally skinny pussies ;)

My History with BM goes way back (Unfortunately) I was early metal-head and I had Venom's Black Metal Album when I was like 12.

That album scared the hell out of me. I mean I liked it but felt I shouldn't. It had upside down crosses and praise Satan and shit. I ditched metal for punk (Black Flag and SST bands) but went back to listen to Venom again just to see what it was about them. Now I know. I mean to me it was more /punk/hard rock sounding. It's pretty stupid stuff but it rocks in a way. The Norwegian stuff is good- Mayhem.

Celtic Frost is awesome. I think BM is pretty 'entertaining'. I mean I laugh at a lot of it but I'm definitely smiling. I like the lower fi- noisy stuff to the classical symphonic stuff. I hate Emperor. Darkthrone is great though.

Rock on!!

People should check out the ambient black metal band called Darkspace. They are crazy, and they have some of the most amazing soundscapes. Cool vocals as well.

^Er, I really thought Scars of the Crucifix sucked to be honest....I prefer his normal deep voice as opposed to the skrieking/growling combo thing.

I watched a Cradle ov Filth DVD last night- 11 Burial Something-or-others- released just after Midian- in other words, right when they were shit. Still, I will say that their first three albums were fantastic, a bit of Cruelty and The Beast and I also liked parts of Bittersuites to Succubi....Dusk and Her Embrace is such an emotional album, tis wonderful. Beyond that, they are shite.

Behemeth are great.
midian is their only good album other than that they suck ass

Been playing a lot of black metal recently: Naglfar (Sheol, Pariah, Harvest), Rotting Christ (Theogonia), Nachymysticum, Septic Flesh (latest album Communion), Naer Maratron, Lunar Aurora...also a few more primitive demo's and such, Druidkh, Striborg, Kvist....for some reason Black Metal is working for me right now. No doubt it will stop soon...

I think I've gone through this entire thread without hearing Bathroy brought up once, which is really too bad. Quorthon was great at what he did.

That said though, I like Bathory much more after they went all Viking rock.

I used to listen to tons of black metal, but now it seems the only stuff that s worth anything is the following bands (and their older stuff, not new): Bathory, Burzum, Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal, Enslaved, Krieg, Varathron, Watain... all I can think of now.

There is still some good stuff coming out from other groups; Dark Fortress from Germany are quite good, Naer Maratron as mentioned are good, Graveworms latest album is pretty cool though not strictly black metal....though theres a lot of shit.

Enslaved's latest, Verterbrae, is interesting; almost movie score, Warner bros style, like melodies. I fucked hate the singing, it is some of the worst in BM though...

Anyone heard Windir? they were pretty good black/viking metal. I believe they were a one (or two?) man project who put out a couple albums, but then the main guy passed away =/

^Hear of Windir, not heard though. What kind of BM, the usual slow depressing one-man stuff or... For one manners, Xasthur is pretty good..Murderous production usually though.

A band I fucking loathe= Hate Forest. Utterly shit music, hateful crap lyrics and the most unimaginative drum machine ever. Druidkh are a lot beter, but please drop the facist stuff...?

I reccomemnd to anyone the latest album by Vintersorg- Solens Rotter (Vintersorg is the singer for Borknagar). Its not strictly black metal, slightly folkly, lotsa clean vocals, beautiful production, and very human sounding drum programming. Excellent scandinavian metal. Also Shining, from Sweden- highly depressing blackened rock stuff, but very good.
