BL Producers, Look here

no it wouldn't...

a trance record at 135 does not sound like a techno record at 135... adn "technical prowess" needed to make both is dif't ... i don't see how clumping music by BPMs would help anything...

likewise, the technical criteria of a solid track for a 190 BPM jungle track would be dif't than a 190 BPM hardcore track...

we could just do basic genres and have a judge for each genre, and then the judges colaborate to pick an overall winner from the catagory winners:
House
Techno/Old School Breaks
Trance/Nu School Breaks
Hip Hop/Downtempo
Jungle/Dnb
Anything Else (Gabber, IDM, Sound Bytes of dying Puppies, ect)

Just let the people pick the best overall song...any style...just like on the floor...

poll style vs judges? everyone post their tracks, and we set a few weeks for voting, and then tab them up at the end? maybe one half BL vote, ane half judges... but i still think the genres need to be split? can we agree on the basic ones I laid out, I'd like to come up w/ a theme and some deadlines and get the ball rolling on this, it seems there is plenty of interest...

But the people aren't going to be judging on technical categories . . . if we are gonna look at both sides of the production than we need judges who know their genre . . . if we are just going on the 'that track went off' style of judging, then yes, the people will tell you.

the genres should be some thing like this:

house
techno
trance
breaks
downtempo
jungle
hip-hop
non-edm

Sounds good to me :) Can we finalise these as the genre breakdown in that case?

I reckon tracks should be judged on both the technical and 'vibe' aspects. Some of the best tunes I've heard wouldn't stand up to much technical scrutiny but definitely get the floor going, so I think it's important that the allover 'feel' be taken into consideration. Maybe a 50/50 split for each?

And as K the J said, can we get a deadline agreed?

did anyone suggest doing it by BPM yet? (blazes another bowl)

hehe...yup

I'm in on this... I can be a judge and not submit. I don't think I'm ready to submit anything so I'll be a judge.

Just need to decide the categories to judge by.

maybe:

Most Innovative (based on the style of current, and the typical format & structure within that style...maybe the artist takes it to new ground in a quality fashion.)

Best Anthem (based on quality of production value, idea behind the music, and the overall energy and lift it has...the most power)

Smoothest Production (just the most flawless and smooth of all the submissions...everything is place perfectly..all the levels are right where they should be, it's like a big fluffy cushion of music to the ear of the listener)

this way it leaves room for an award that doesn't rely on style or genre...but the producer can gear their work towards being considered for one of the 3 (or more if we can think of others) categories.

how ever many categories we make...we can (when judging time comes) start a thread for each category and just have people reply in that thread with the name of their pick for that category and nothing else. from there we can tally.

We will also have a thread that has only the submissions of links to download the tracks for people to listen to so that they can judge them.

We can have a public vote account for 50% of the final vote
and a Judge vote account for the other 50% I think we need atleast 3 judges that aren't going to submit work to the contest

are these being suggested to go along with or supplant the genre categories? I think we should still have genre categories . . . a smoothly mixed hip hop track isn't neccesarily a smoothly mixed deep house track because you are going for different things . . . innovation in one genre is old hat in another, etc. etc.

^^^ second that, but there Should be several award categories outside of the musical genres, so that we could actually get several overall favs..

seth is on it!. spinal, you will have to have a server and submit a link. If anyone needs server space for their tracks, i can hook them up. lets get this together. we should start on the 15th.

just to add yet another opinion :) but i think the above is a good idea. i'd suggest maybe splitting by genre (on the lines physix suggested), and letting all blers vote (though we run the risk of people just getting their friends to bump up their total, but c'est la vie), and then maybe have something like the breakdown djsethnichols suggested, not based on genre, voted on by a group of judges. that way we get popular winners and technical winners, best of both worlds...

i'd also maybe suggest, if some people can supply the necessary web or ftp space, that all tracks submitted for a particular genre are zipped up or something, and once voting starts people can only download the entire genre, rather than individual tracks. this way people have to listen to all the submissions for a genre, rather than only one or two and basing their vote on that. obviously theres problems with this idea (space required, dial-up users), but the benefit (every track can be judged, so no-one is disadvantaged) might outweigh the problems...good/bad?

just my 2.63 australian cents (adjusting for latest exchange rates)
