best sleep aids

white noise is horrnedous and probably one of the most irritating things when trying to get to sleep.
IMO I need complete silence to sleep.

White noise machines don't technically produce white noise. But I'm not sure which of the two you are talking about.

a 72 hour field exercise with 2 days each that both had 40km forced marches while wearing 90lbs of gear slopping though the mud, with any chance for sleep broken up by machine gun fire and artillery shelling.

never slept harder in my life when I got back to the armoury.

(What I am trying to say: go out there and do something physically brutal, and dont pussy out after 3 hours, fucking run or cycle or swim at the pool or some shit for like a whole weekend)

failing that...uuh, intravenous thiopental? :D

seroquel is actaully very effective too.

great advice. push your body past its mental boundaries for a long enough period and you will HAVE to sleep.

i wouldn't suggest any benzo's. They sure do make you go to sleep but waking up is a major problem. I never feel rested at all when i go to sleep on benzo's.

I personally have amazing nights of sleep on benzos and feel completely refreshed in the morning (if I've actually had enough sleep). I only encounter problems with them if I've used them for a few days in a row, then it is very hard to go to sleep with out one for a day or two, unless i really wear myself out, as stated above.

for OTC melatonin is probably the best, then tylenol PM or something with Benedryl.

Nyquil always knocks me out cold tho

FOr scripts...lunesta is okay, ambien is better, but some benzos are better.

Hands down winner:

Fresh valerian or the extract, or capsules.

It's incredibly calming, no hangover, feels really nice, etc.

Try chewing 3 capsules before bed an you'll drift off in no time.

Woah there, I wouldn't recommend "chewing" valerian. Have you smelled the stuff?

Valerian root! Best stuff ever! ! !

I took a bunch last night around 1am because I couldn't sleep, and I woke up an hour before my alarm went off this morning (7am) feeling like I'd been asleep for days. It knocks you down into the really deep sleep so your body can repair. Vivid dreams are often a cool side effect of this.
valerian makes my insomnia worse.....all light seems more intense when i take it.....i wish it helped me, but it does not....i think we all have specific body chemistries and some things work while others do not :|

I dislike it personally, maybe because I like benzo's more..
i have scripts for ambien and temazepam.....i like the ambien more....honestly. i almost always wake up a 4am with the temazepam.....the ambien helps me sleep thru the night.....ah....for the love of ambien <3

like i said, we all have different chemistries......you just have to try different stuff to figure what works for you personally....

I'm the same way, Alicat. Valerian makes me panicky and stimulated and jittery. Apparently there's a part of the population that reacts to valerian in a weird way and get a stimulant effect of sorts, and you 'n me are part of that part!

I *like* the smell of valerian, btw ;)

melatonin
remeron
ambien
sonata
valium/xanax/ativan
restoril
masturbation
excercise at least 3 hours prior to going to sleep

i have a restoril Rx as well as old Rx's for ambien, ambien CR, sonata and my valium rx (for anxiety, not insomnia)..

I've tried the following sleep aid medication, in order from most effective to least effective (for me, of course):

Definitely works
Restoril (temazepam)

Sorta works
Imovane (zopiclone)
Ativan (lorazepam)

Have some valuable use but not for sleeping
Valium (diazepam)
Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
Atarax (hydroxyzine)

Might as well be placebo
Valerian
Melatonin
5-HTP

I'm down with Restoril. Used it for a few months and stopped with no real withdrawal at *all*. I didn't abuse it and found that it put me to sleep reliably every night with minimal hangover. I also didn't do all the stupid shit I'd do on Ambien - y'know, like vanilla ice cream-dijon mustard sundaes at three in the morning.

If you're the type to go hog wild on benzos, though, stay the heck away from Temazepam. It's the only one I ever found to be euphoric, and I could definitely see lots of people wanting to abuse it.

From what i have tried and heard from others, benzos have very different effects from person to person. Temazepam may be the least euphoric benzo i have tried, even with a couple of beers. Great for sleep though. Its duration of action makes it ideal to get you some decent sleep without leaving you drowsy in the morning. But as stated above, everyone is different.
