SSRIs, "Downers", Pot, even winos...

Hear me out... what has been your best strategy for combating anxiety?

How has your drug of choice helped you

a natural way would be to get 30mins of vigorous cardio, and maybe try some weight lifting. it helps your body release stress and wind down.

studies have shown that 30mins of virorous activity a day can be as affective as Prozac (although thats not an anti-anxiety drug, staying physically active can help you feel better and naturally release stressors)

SSRI's are increasingly being prescribed for anxiety but they are largely useless. Just about any depressants will have have SOME impact on anxiety and of course benzodiazepines are the current cornerstone of pharmacological anxiety management. Alcohol can be used for anxiety but the long term costs are generally too high and its much more socially acceptable to take a pill a couple times a day than carry around a paper bag concealing a wine bottle.

There are various herbal and over the counter ways to combat anxiety from the VERY mild chamomile, passion flower, valerian to the more potent kava kava and the stronger sedating antihistamines like diphenhydramine and doxylamine.

Anxiety can be managed pharmacologically however it is less than ideal beyond acute periods. The best way to manage anxiety would be finding a good psychologist and working on overcoming the causes of your anxiety and learning ways to mentally combat it... I know that isn't the preferred method by BLers but I just wanted to point out that taking a drug will briefly alleviate the symptoms but for true relief, you have to attack the cause and really do some work. I have found a lot of ways to personally combat anxiety by examining my thought patterns and developing strategies and breathing techniques to handle it when it arises.

I've been on 300mg Effexor XR daily for the past three years. Others on BL may disagree but Effexor has helped quite a bit for my anxiety.

I'm also prescribed 1mg Xanax for when I'm in situations where I experience overwhelming anxiety. A benzo like xanax could help if you are prone to panic attacks like I am.

As for pot -
In my experience (I think most BLers would agree) pot will make your anxiety worse.

i agree with what you've said. basically i think drugs should be a last resort, or an adjunct to other forms of treatment. however, when i am on bluelight, i often also feel like that's not what people are interested in. many people here are ready to make the deal with the devil and use drugs, despite the fact that they end up screwing you in the long run most of the time.

Having taken almost every SSRI and Tricyclant Anti-depressant as well as 2 MAOIs and a hand full of other A-topical Anti-psychotics, I will say this the regiment i am on now is the best for anxiety. I have agoraphobia and social Anxiety disorder with panic attacks and i take 8 mgs of Clonazepam a day as well as 2 mgs of xanax on hold for panic attacks and 30mgs of temazapam for Sleep. yes you heard right, 3 benzodiazapines. IMO Anti-depressants don't do shit for anxiety except exacerbate the problem and cause horrible withdrawal symptoms. One of the worst of the bunch being Effexor, however, every one has a different body chemistry, thus while the 3 benzos work for me they may not work for others and they are quite dangerous to the average "recreational" drug user. the doses Im on in Co-administration for some one with no tolerance would likely kill them, with Alprazolam being the most abused Benzo in the States, temazepam being the most abused in Europe and the most seditive next to Rohypnol and clonazepam being the 2nd most abused in the states you will be hard pressed to find a doctor to prescribe such a regiment. Anyways, IMO benzos and other depressants like Ludes and Barbiturates are the best for treating the symptoms of Anxiety and panic attacks, however, Cognitive behavioral Therapy is the best way to ultimately treat anxiety issues.

It's different for everyone. Valium doesn't do SHIT for me. Xanax helps the best. I take 1mg and I feel fine. I've tried 10mg of Valium and .5mg Klonopin and like 4mg Ativan. Ativan helps the second most. Klonopin doesn't do shit either. Benzo's are the only thing that help with my anxiety though. Opiates help with it a little bit, but when you come down it's like 10x worse. I can't feel a high from benzos even if I try, so it's strictly no anxiety pills.

It's up to you to decide in the end. Alot of people are astonished that I don't feel ANYTHING from Valium, not even the slightest anxiety help.

Oh and also, my psychiatrist REFUSES to give me benzos. How do I tell her that the SSRI's don't fucking help and that the only thing that works are benzos without coming off as a drug seeker? Again, I CAN'T GET HIGH OFF OF BENZOS.

I don't suffer from anxiety anymore, but when I was codeine calmed me down... not that I'd recommend opioids for anxiety or other mental health issues.

thanks guys!

its such a double ended sword cause you gotta experiement with a whole slew of SSRI bull crap just to find out what works...

SSRIs really dont seem to have any effect for anxiety based on my experience...

doctors will perscribe anything just to get you out of their frickin office!

Yeah, I mean if the question is what will most effectively take away anxiety, the answer for me would no doubt be opiates. Anxiety isn't much of an option after you rail some oxy. But if the question is what drug is the best to help manage anxiety, opiates are probably the last thing you want to start taking.

For me, pot works wonders, however I must admit I'm not really an anxious person in general. Benzo's under doctor supervision are realistically your best bet. But really treating anxiety with only chemicals isn't the best idea, try to find the root of the issue.

LOL, + 1 here too. Codeine always calmed me when I used it but for a weak opiate it was still a bitch to quit. Physically, no, but mentally, yes

That's what I said... hence:
