Bands that were good before they became popular (then sucked)

When I was younger, my musical ear was, well, lets just say it wasn't developed. I used to listen to alot of nu-metal like slipknot and mudvayne (bands I cannot stand now). However, I remembered an old slipknot album, MFKR, and decided to give it a listen again, and I found that it wasn't half bad. It's not great, butI find it much more enjoyable than anything else I have ever heard by them, and it really does have small flashes of brilliance. I think if they stuck to more mellow tunes they could have been something, because they sound alot better than their heavy shit.

Anybody else have any bands that were good before they blew up, but then sucked?

Edit: Sorry mods I opened thread in wrong forum. Please move to NEMD.

Slipknot (MFKR sucked IMO but self titled and IOWA were great/good) Now they blow.

Metallica everything up to ...And Justice For All and then they started sucking

Korn went downhill with Issues and gotten worse ever since

In Flames went downhill with Soundtrack to Your Escape in 04

Machinehead went downhill around 1996 or so... But their album in 03 was good and I hear their new one is pretty good aswell.

Fear Factory started suckin around 2000 but then had a good album in 2004, but then 2005 went downhill again with Transgression. Never stop listening to them they are fucking awesome anyway.

It's hard to remember these bands cause I don't really listen to em anymore, but im sure there are tons more.

i used to listen and go to hard out punk concerts when i was 14-18 and see bands like........Blink 182,Good Charlotte, AFI, Pennywise, etc, etc, etc but as soon as these bands became popular and started playing on the radio all the appeal was lost for me.........and still i very rarely listen to any of my old punk now......! also shit like the chillis, rage against the machine, soundgarden etc etc same thing happened and most of the appeal was lost.......

except the chillis and rage are still fucking mean even after those radio pricks tried to commercialise.............

Moving to NEMD..... though I'd list Cradle of Filth after Dusk, Metallica after the Black Album, even Evanescences latest album is sucky.... as to electronic artists, the biggest exponential rise in popularity accompanied by a downgrading of quality, has been achieved by Infected Mushroom

soundgarden

no no no.

no no.

no.

soundgarden was always awesome. start to finish.

although their 1st couple ep's sounded kinda rough.

and the song "spoonman", which i was never a big fan of. actually the bass player wrote that 1.

In Flames was indeed awesome before Soundtrack. Now they're a watered down parody of themselves. Their early stuff is so godly.

As for Metallica, I'm not really a latter-day Metallica hater, per say. I thought Metallica's black album was very good. I actually enjoyed Load for the most part, even. Reload also had its moments. Garage, Inc. was great, even though a lot of it was previously recorded material. Everything since has been crap, but I'm expecting some kind of return to form with the new album.

I really like Taking Back Sunday's first album (I don't do emo music). I heard their latest one recently and I wanted to cut my ears out with a spoon.

Slipknot's newer album (Vol.3) is their best work. MKFR was way too scattered.

In Flames' Come Clarity isn't half bad.

How come people are hating on Slipknot? I think they are one of the better bands out there. Their last album was awesome IMO. They've got good songs and really good guitar players. Comparing them to Limp Bizkit and calling them nu metal is like comparing Blink 182 with the Misfits. Absolute blasphemy if you ask me.

And Evanescance weren't around before their last album so they shouldn't even be considered. I thought the second album was actually better than the first one, mainly because they lost their original guitarist Ben Moody. His choppy power chord playing was repetative and boring.

^ get real man! three dollar bill yall ruled.

and Slipknot didn't start showing that they had good guitarists until the last CD. I don't count MFKR. I didn't like the last two CD's, as I don't think melody was their forte. Hatred and chaos was.

Metallica all the way. They did shit for their last album but "the new song" sounds like their next album could be promising. HOW ARE YOU GUYS EVEN TALKING ABOUT EVANESCANCE?!?!?! I agree 100% with bailey
