Are men smarter than women? (merged)

it depends on what you consider "smart"

women, for example, can use their good looks to obtain free drugs and pretty much anything else they want... women are also VERY decietful.

some men just seem to have an aptitude for book-smarts, because knowledge is power, and all men want to be powerful.

you want to explain why there are more men in prison than women? maybe we arn't all so smart.

starlightgemini

you are simply expressing the "nature vs nurture" argument or expressed differently "genes vs environment".

the nurture view was prevalent from about 30+ years ago but i am of the view it all has far more to do with genes and the two sexes have been hardwired for countless millenia to have different brain functions as well as physical differences.

do you accept that men are athletically superior to women. if yes why would you even imagine it is not possible they are also smarter ??

Hmmm...you've raised a good point. I think its the structure of the male form that leads them to *generally* be stronger/more powerful than women. I also think women have a stronger pain threshold than men (our bodies were DESIGNED with birthing in mind). I can accept these facts because they deal with the PHYSICAL. Clearly, our physical anatomies are different. That is a proven fact.

However as far as the intellectual aspect of one gender being better than another....its just not as cut and dry as the physical differences.

Does this answer your questions?

BTW, nice topic :D

Intelligence is a purely physical thing.

well.... fox recently had a nationwide iq test and men did come out 2 points higher than women on average.

but was it taken into account if this was based on co-ed schooled persons?
it has been reported that girls will learn more and score higher when they are in a single sex schooling environment and are not intimidated by boys, have to be distracted by other concerns stemming from boys or are discrinated against by teachers based on sex.
just as another factor in the discussion.

starlightgemini, lots of people (myself included) see the "mind" as simply resulting from our physiology. Thus, intelligence could be seen as physical.

But like wanderlust said, there are too many factors. I don't believe that we can honestly evaluate men and women's iq scores and really take out any biases. Maybe in the future when we are raised more equally, but we aren't raised equally yet.

Psht! Men aren't just, if not more, distracted by women in a learning environment? Please! Personally I think it boils down to people being individually smart, not one sex having an upper hand. There are many kinds of intelligence. :p

I see your point. I think I'm having trouble expressing my thoughts into words here, as far as my view goes.

I guess basically what I think is, we know for a fact that our bodies are different but (and please fell free to correct me if I'm wrong) our brains function the same.

banana

note also that IQ tests are already calibrated to remove any gender based biases.

i guess the above means 50% of women are smarter than half the male population yet they do not come close to being competitive at the higher end of intellectual pursuits. strange eehhh ??

again i claim genes not nurture.

This isn't really an issue to me.

We are all individuals.

We should interact as such, and not as part of a larger team or side based on our genitalia.

But hey...

look at me.

I'm talking out of my ass again.

Does anyone have a mint or something?

no the functions are NOT the same. simplistically women tend to use the left hemisphere of the brain more than men and also tend to score higher than men on verbal tests. men are superior on spatial tests but read my previous post again re gender bias being removed from IQ tests.

you can separate people in any number of ways. gender, age, nationality, race, occupation, sexual preference etc. and of course you will see differences. we aren't completely equal beings when it comes to our "intelligence quotient"

=D

I just don't like stereotypes and grouping people together based on broad generalizations. Thats probably what is sparking me to debate this topic.

Even if it is well supported by statistics....you are still just talking about a large GROUP.

I like to see people as individuals. *shrugs*

what about whites being smarter than blacks or mexicans??
cuz i know thats true, and im not being racist either.
but id have to say the smartest race is chinese or japanese(its one of those countries).

plus IQ tests vary on many different levels. you could pull a "Groundhogs Day"(the movie) type thing and take the test day after day and just vary around how the actuall day is and you will score different. somedays you will score better jsut becase its sunny out! you really cant base whose smarter on IQ tests. people are smarter than others on all different levels!

Looks like half the people that replied should be avoiding commenting about intelligence altogether. Theres some incredibly dumb answers here.

Interesting topic though. :)

Im with you xtcxtc... its ludicrous to suggest (in the face of evidence) that men and women are so different in so many ways, yet somehow have identical minds.

The same goes for race... look how far apart races are physically. In the time that it took to evolve in those ways, its just stupid to suggest that by some magical coincidence the brain just stayed the same.

Thats not racist. Its not sexist. Its fact.

As for men and women... Id be hesitant to say men are more "intelligent" since I think there are many kinds of intelligence. Id probably say that men have a better visual grasp of complex problems (and so a faster result in them), while women are better some other areas. That probably helps men in something like an IQ test, but women have other tests that they are ahead in too.
