anyone wanna talk soccer/football?

About to head out to get good seats for the Barc/Arse game. I'm going for Barcelona b/c my friend who is really into it is from Spain, and they have an fun to watch style. Will be fun =)

On another note.. Anyone noticed how the whole italian football scene is basically run by the mafia? 15 clubs or something are involved, Juventus might even get downgraded to serie C after winning the championship. They really are a bunch of assholes, fooling the whole world into thinking they play some great football, they're just great cheaters.

I would laugh a lot if juve went to Serie C.

Think barca will win tonight, but should be a cracking match either way.

Andl oving football.guardian.co.uk quality football coverage. I love david pleat's chalkboard, the more of that type of analysis the better. It is seldom seen in britain.

Yeah, would be good to see them go down. "2-0 up and fucked it up, Juve, Juve" (CL semi-final, 99 :)).

I totally with Ernestrome about the Guardian's coverage. I also like Simon Jordan's (?) columns - he's the boss of Crystal Palace and just says exactly what he feels, and keeps getting fined.

@Blowmonkey: if by "how so?" you meant, "why do I hate Arsenal?", it's because I'm a Manchester Utd supporter, so we have that rivalry going :)

I did feel sorry for them after Lehman was sent off though.

In less than two weeks, I head off to Germany! Woot, yeah! Seeing all the group stage games. I picked up my currency the other day and have paid for just about everything. Although my Credit Card has copped an absolute hammering! But I sooo cannot wait!

For those that don't know this is first time our nation will be competing since 1974 (our only other appearance). Australian soccer has suffered from incompetence, insolvency, corruption, in-fighting, racism in the pre-PC eras, some shocking luck and some ordinary teams along the way. Germany had better be prepared for an onslaught over-patriotic Aussies letting out 32 years frustration during this World Cup, because we are going to be partying real hard!

Sadly I won't be able to see any more after the group stages, I'm off to the sunny Artic circle for cruise after that.

I play as a midfielder for my high school team. Apperantly after our goalie quit in the middle of our last game, i was put into the goalie position. After the game was over the whole team was asking me to play goalie. So i have two positions on the team. Cant play as a forward becuase my shot is bad. I odnt watch soccer on tv or follow leagues.

what is the most popular team in england?..just curious (sp?)
=)

Manchester United.

They have the largest crowds, plus a whole load of casual supporters (England and worldwide).

Chelsea will be catching them up in the casual supporters now, because they are doing well at the moment.

Liverpool are also huge worldwide, as are Arsenal and to a lesser degree Tottenham. Newcastle always get big crowds, but don't have so many supporters outside Newcastle.

And so it begins!

I even got suckered into a FIFA mastercard by my bank. I'm such an easy sell. :)

OOOLÉ! OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ! OOOLÉ! OOOLÉ!

i watched the italy/ghana game today. the ghana team put up a brve fight but the fact this was their first world cup match showed. watching the italians is always a pleasure.

they - the us - are obviously trying to stay positive but looking at the matches to come, i don't see how the us can possibly qualify.

i put money on the czech republic to win the european championship in 2004 and, aside form greece's fairytale success, they came very close.

I don't usually bet on sports, but had to get a ticket yesterday in favour of the US team. Alongside, I picked a few other underdogs, like Ghana and Ukraine. I figured, might as well go for the big money. Needless to say, I'm 0 for 2 so far, lol (ticket's no good any more).

I enjoyed the final minutes of the Japan-Australia game. Japan played as though they were afraid of the ball. They had a few excellent, easy scoring opportunities, but simply choked each time. Even though I feel that the Aussies are a bit rough sometimes (thanks in part to their bully coach), seeing them win in that euphoric finale yesterday did bring a wide smile to my face.

My pick is France. Their first game is today. I love upsets though. :)

What do you guys reckon so far?

Argentina where fucking brilliant yesteday against Serbia. I'm expecting them to lift the world cup at the end.

At the moment I'm pretty ashamed of the way England have been playing. Utter shite. We need to sort it out.

I've been watching 3 games a day since it started. As usual I'm cheering for Germany. If they play England next round it'll be a great game, one of my close friends is a rabid England fan. I missed the 3 games today though. So far it's been an excellent tournament. even more enjoyable than Korea/Japan 2002.

I'm half german half french, and well the French aren't doing so well. Honestly though I've got my eye on Argentina and the Netherlands. Brazil always perform well but they rub me the wrong way. My dark horse favourite is the Korean team this time around.
