Anger at move to stop drug users having children

Oh my God, addicts should not be allowed to have children. ADDICTS, not users.
I was born into the peak period of my parents addiction to crack/cocaine, and growing addiction to alcohol. Long story short, it sucked. ALOT. I would never treat anyone with the abandon and irresponsibility my parents addictions allowed them to treat me with, much less an innocent child who depends solely on their parents. I am disgusted by people who would fight for their right to be an addict and have a child. My brother's on his way to alcoholism, I was as well at one point. Would I have been had my mother been unable to discipline us because she was doing the same thing? Maybe, but it would have been alot harder, and probably less frequent. I've suffered alot and my parents should not have had children.

not all addicts are the same.

They are all the same in the fact that they have an addiction. Having children requires 100% of your energy. The same can be said about addiction. You don't have 200% to give. The child suffers.

Having children while addicted to any substance is just fucking plain old irresponsible. I think that this law is a step in the right direction, and should be followed up by laws for all drug/alcohol addicts, regardless of 'how fit' they appear to be.

Some of you seem to be forgetting that this law doesn't have anything to do with taking children away. It's about preventing people with current addictions from HAVING NEW CHILDREN.

It's my personal opinion that way too many idiots (social, intellectual, or otherwise) have children. It's the one thing in life that requires the most intelligence and responsibility.

I think that there should be birth control in all of the food we eat, and water we drink. When you pass a very strict, difficult test that consists of emotional, social, and intellectual intelligence, you can be prescribed an antidote to the birth controls and be allowed to reproduce.

Less stupid parents means fewer stupid children.

I agree a parent who is an addict is a less good parent than they would be (except in exceptional circumstances) to that end I concur but to say tyhat they aint no good at all is another thing completely , many are plenty good enough so what difference overall except that the parents know tyhey weren't 100% as long as the children are happy and well it's alll fine innit?

My kids , two are adults , one uses cannabis/trips/E occasssioanlly the other does no drugs through personal choice.
Had I not had access to opiates at a critical point in my life I would have lost my kids ! It helped me keep myself together during massive stressful time !

Do you think you handle being a parent better than most people who are addicts? Because it sounds like you do.

Yes WE were much much better parents than many other drug addicts tho I went through a phase when using I.V. phet/methamphet whenI was unfit bigstyle. 4 kids all doing w1ell within top three of claass all the time except the one that went to her mother ??

it's the damn police state!

I can't believe this. i have been on methadone for over 7 years. I got on it to get off various opiates and i have stayed on it because i just didn't want to risk relapsing. I was on 125 mg at first but in the last year or so went down to 20mg, so in other words, not much. I have a university degree and am working on a second one. I have never been on welfare and have no criminal record. I look nice and well-groomed and normal and if you ever met me you would never think i had even had a drug problem. Lately I have been trying to conceive. i read up on the effects of methadone on a fetus and found that there was no evidence of risk of birth defects or serious long-term problems. So, now i hear that the police state wants to stick its nose into my life and control me in this way? that is crazy. Like with other treatment resources for pregnant women, the risks of alerting the police state to your existence and your condition and loosing your baby outweigh the risks of using drugs or methadone from the black market and avoiding 'the system' at all costs. I have a friend who had 2 babies taken away from her (to be adopted out) because she was on methadone and on welfare. There had been no evidence of any kind of neglect, only the presupposition that she would neglect her babies, brought to the attention of 'child protection' services by her bitch of a mother. Now, i know that i would be as capable as anyone to raise my own kids.. the only difference between me and anyone else is that i have to pick up a few bottles of methadone from the pharmacy once a week. If they make women on methadone sign an agreement not to have children, they should also make women who are poor, illiterate, disabled, depressed, or disadvantaged in any way sign the same agreement. of exposure to drugs in utero is the concern, they should make all smokers and women who are taking antidepressants or other medications sign it as well. Hell, why don't they just drug test all pregnant women (for prescription drugs and nicotine as well) and force them to get abortions! Even better, why not knock down the doors of anyone who lives below the poverty line and take away children under 1 year old so the adoption agencies can make even more profit. Why don't they make people on welfare sign the same agreement, too? think of all the money the government will save on missed prenatal visits and medical care with all these women trying to hide their pregnancies since the agencies that are supposed to help them will only turn against them? This kind of policing is totally unacceptable. Canadians like to believe they live in a free country. Does this sound like a free country to you, or does it sound more like eugenics and Nazi Germany?

^Look I would have to say that you do not understand that the reality of the shyster junky on the streets and the opiate dependant "normal guy" are so far away from each other it isn't true.

True so much more noticeable than the average guy who you mchat to at the pub or wehen picking daughters up from schoool

Once an evil minded pharmacist ripped me with a script ?(oh yeah this goes on) and i refused to back down insisted they stock check it or would call police , i got my missin 75ml methadone and a visit from social services pronto, the evil bitch.
Social services came in looked about then apologised for the intrusion and said that their hand was forced due tp complaint. But what the witch in the pharmacy didn'y know was that we (for as diffwerent reason already had contact with SS )
THEY BASICALLY TOOK THE VIEW THAT WE WERE DOING GREAT JOB (STRAIGHT UP) SO not all addicts the same just people some good some bad.
