I think sometimes people respond to what looks like a poor situation (e.g. poverty) by pushing themselves and they end up achieving way beyond the norm. I don't think that's genetics triumphing over circumstance, I think it's circumstance producing a paradoxical result. I have in mind Warren Buffett, for example.

I agree, and hadn't really thought of that as a motivating factor for other people, despite it factoring heavily into why I want to achieve so much - to prove certain teachers, and the location where i'm from, wrong.

Just to prove your point, look where Lincoln grew up:

In fact, I know intelligent people who have no wish to push themselves outside of their circumstances, whatever motivation it is they are lacking to do so? I guess being driven, by whatever, is just as valuable as intelligence, if not moreso. But is that genetics? Or nurture? ;)

I suppose I am reacting against the word "nurture" which to me implies deliberately providing beneficial "circumstances" with the aim of developing a "successful" person. If you were to use the word "environment" rather than "nurture" then I'd be happier to discuss in those terms.

Basically, the "nature vs nurture" debate is incorrectly polarised between those two concepts, for the sake of a catchy phrase.

And to answer the question, I don't think a person's behaviours are ever the result of either genetics alone, or environment alone, but always the result of a complex interplay between the two.

If pushed, though, I'd have to say that we are all genetically more similar than we are different, and, by and large, environment has the upper hand in creating different outcomes.

I always just assumed nurture was a piece of terminology used in this concept that encapsulated the 'environment' of that child. Or more of to encapsulate that child's experience of life since joining us on this earth. But your semantics do make sense though.

Yes, nurture can be taken to just mean 'environment', but it is a word loaded with ideas of positive parenting, encouragement etc. These nuances of meaning in innocent words can subtly affect how we think about things, and I prefer to try to eliminate such sources of biased thought by being a stickler for semantics!

I didn't ever get a degree despite the protestations of my parents and much of my adult life I've spent trying to prove that I could be successful without it. I think I managed, but now I'm sat here half way through my life thinking I could have spent my time so much better, in many ways! How is your "prove them wrong" plan going? I hope you don't let it rule you.

I missed replying to this. My prove them wrong plan was accomplished when I hit 20 and didn't have 3 children already. It's been going from strength to strength from there. I've managed to stay away from my hometown since leaving as soon as i could too.

Cheers for the bump!

What I ponder is how the fuck you can find the time and motivation to debate these (or any) issues on the internet with such passion and commitment, regardless of resource ie: time?

Are you unemployed?

I work full time and have 2 kids I just don't have the hours in the day to spend the time on this shizz...I'm impressed that some of you can, especially on a 6 fig salary and full on professional jobs. Tell me your secret please?

I'm "economically inactive" and even then I don't have time to keep up with Bluntsie. Fuck knows what he actually does in his business. Not much is my guess, and Mrs MSB must be a busy woman!

My work is starting to pick up pace after being slow for a while so i'll have to go into BL withdrawals soon!

Hopefully I can say the same soon too.
