Cons
No DJ's in front rooms.. the music is just coming off a cd player somewhere
80's night on friday nights in the back
and they replaced cheesy trance with cheesy house for saturday nights.
bogans still get in(mind you I saw these ones get escorted out after spitting on the floor and falling out of chairs)
new on tap!!!
the head chef quit day before opening night due to reasons....

Pros
70's style intelegent lighting dance floor
Becks on tap
nice lounges(these will get trashed tho)
good staff(WTF!!)
I didn't need to show ID(must be my bald patch)

essentialy it's going to flop real soon as not many poeple were drinking..
I say there will be some changes real soon.. ie the music out the back 80's WTF

id come, but i dont know you, as i havent been to BL for a while . . .

my girl says the whole kensington thing was a local urban myth, but im pretty sure its in development . . .

so, Mbar is simply a restaurant with no djs? . . . i dont get it . . .

meh, newy bores me anyway . . .
 
^^^According to someone from the LAB, the kensington people fucked up the licensing paperwork and it will be a fair way off before they get it going. Plus they havent even started on the inside which will need to be completly torn out due to whiteants in the interior.

If it is going to happen, it isnt going to happen soon.

As for Mbar, they had a DJ on the Sunday night of the long weekend. Just playing house though. Nothing huge.
 
poor newcastle . . . and it was so fun when i came here, bright eyed and naive, five years ago for university . . .

wait, maybe im just jaded . . .

what's wrong with an 80's night? newcastle needed one, maybe it still does, i guess that depends on whether their playlist consists of music of the wham or cabaret voltaire variety. the latter i wish.

house at the mbar? with the exception of nutshell and possibly dixx, newcastle nights/clubs just can't seem to help themselves when it comes to playing it safe. they go for the late 20's - 35 house or rnb market which is boring, ubiquitous.

this is the problem with the australian nightclub scene in general, playing it safe. it too closely follows mainstream uk trends in regards to dance (the us with rnb/rap). the music is "tried and tested", monotonous and familiar. cutting edge music and diverse genres are rarely represented. the scene as a whole has become stagnant and repetitive thanks to this lack of variety. could this be why few people embrace dance music for the long term?

we are lucky indeed that nutshell exists because their unique contribution has given newcastle somewhat of a scene, a reputation for their niche. if only they started releasing music. sure there are other good nights but they are few and far between. if only more promoters took a gamble on diversity and invested in music for it's brilliance not its "drink sales pulling power" they could build something solid here.

Yes - you're totally right, i saw a flyer tonight and Nutshell is on the 16th. I could have sworn that it was on the 9th initially but there you have it :)
 
Went to Mbar opening night. It was okay, but the airflow is horrible. The only place where there is actually air is the pokie room. The people there just seemed to be the Fanny's crowd but with blazers on.

By about 2am, the club was only half full. Compared to it being packed at 11pm... The bartenders also take about 10 minutes to make one cocktail.

Let's just say I'm not rushing to go back there...

Very disappointing really. I never went to the Merc and I'd always heard such good things about it. Eh. :\

On a good note though, the 70's light-up dance floor was quite brilliant. :)
 
trance night was good, huge crowd!!. the guys who were organising it said that they might have trance nights once a month!
 
that would only work during the summer season in newcastle . . .

people tend to get a little more introverted during winter in newcastle . . .
