Rather partial to 'em myself as it goes... not that I've gotten around to rolling one for years, mind.
Doubt I'll manage to save enough for the 'Dam meet myself, but it should be one hell of a party, so I shall do my best

i was originally on the "just pick a date and i'll be there" train as well, but i'm starting to plan lots more travel for this summer so i hope this firms up soon.

there's been some discussion at various levels about widening the scope of this event to include some more formalised discussion, conference activities, presentations and the like. even if this doesn't happen, we want to do everything we can to help ensure this is a well-attended informal event.
while nothing is yet set in stone in terms of any formal schedule, there's a feeling among some bluelighters, some staff and the admins that we need to set a date in stone for this event so that we can give people as much notice as possible to start planning travel and accommodation.
we feel that, if we set a date now, while it's inevitable that some people wishing to attend won't be able due to other commitments, the date is now certain and the event will grow organically and achieve the critical mass necessary to be deemed successful.
we've tried to arrive at a date somewhat democratically. the most popular month in this poll is july. we tried to find a large (unaffiliated) social event which coincided with a weekend in july and discovered that the dance valley festival* should be taking place on the 11th july in spaarnwoude which is about 20km west of amsterdam. this seems like the perfect event around which meetup plans can grow organically. obviously, a large dance festival will be of interest to many bluelighters but people are free to attend or not attend that event. obviously, being on the saturday night, it's likely to become the keystone of many people's plans and, in a sense, the 'official' meetup.
if we're able to expand the scope of the event in a more formal direction, we can add those events on the thursday and friday.
let's publicise this date as widely as possible - instead of one global announcement, i think this will build better as a grassroots campaign with individual forums highlighting this in ways the think best.
