2013-2014 Football Thread v.3 - Come on You Hull

Blatant diving in the penalty area should be punished with a red card, a dodgy penalty can influence the result of a game, even of whole tournaments, cheating that leads to penalties or red cards being awarded should be punished by sending off the culprit.

100% agreed. Actually, I do believe that somewhere and sometime in the near future a referee will send a player off for blatant diving. I reckon it would really start something. Hope so, one of the reasons why I don't particularly enjoy the World Cup any more. Past couple of Euro Championships have been pretty good for non-diving.

Roy Hodgson asked to be paid in opera tickets at Inter Milan

On Friday, Internazionale president Massimo Moratti will formally hand over a 70% controlling stake of the club to Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir. Going forward, the new owner will have to pay his managers in actual money, which hasn't always been the case for Moratti.

Following a two-year stint as manager at Inter — where he dragged the Milanese side from the nether regions of Serie A to a UEFA Cup Final — Roy Hodgson returned to the San Siro as a caretaker manager for six games in 1999. According to an interview Moratti gave to The Sun, the current England gaffer took the role as a favor and insisted that he be paid only in tickets to the opera:

“He didn’t want to be paid. It was for one month or something. And he told me ‘no, no, no I don’t want to be paid by you. I do it because we are friends and you need me.’

“He was fantastic. Then I asked him ‘please, I don’t want you to do it without anything from my side’.

“I insisted and he told me: ‘If you oblige me, I have to say that I will have tickets for La Scala’.

“We also went together of course. It was an opera of Verdi but I don’t remember which one it’s such a long time ago.”

Moratti also revealed that Hodgson used to give his children philosophy books, inspiring three of his five kids to study philosophy at university. Who knew the current England manager was so gosh-darn cultured?

Presumably, Chelsea are wishing they agreed a similar opera tickets-style remuneration package for Roberto Di Matteo, rather than continuing to pay him £130,000 a week a year after he was fired.

Interesting, Hodgson seems like a good man, if only he were a little more adventurous tactically, really didn't like how he set up England in the last Euros.

Di-Matteo is still getting £140,000 a week, and will continue until the end of the 2014 season, fucking hilarious. He is laughing all the way to the bank.. what Id do with that money L:(

A lot of united transfer rumors lately. Falcao, iniesta, and reus from I've been reading. I highly doubt the first two will happen but reus I think is very possible. Especially that he has a release clause.

Its how they sell papers though, and most of the time its complete bullshit. Always comes from a confidential source aka the journo looking for some hits on his new article, unless a bid is made and confirmed I dont get it any of it.

Yeah I know. But part of the fun of the summer and winter transfer windows is to read this bullshit and try to guess which ones are true and which ones aren't. At least for me it is. A lot of the rumors are usually true. Some people ignore it completely during the summer. I can't resist.

Italy are really on top their game despite conceding two. Playing some quality stuff. Most importantly with the same tenacity that saw them dominate spain in the cofeds. Balotelli blew some clear cut chances that should'ave seen'em bury nigeria.

Cracking match. Let's see how it ends.

Surprisingly entertaining for being a friendly.

WTF! How have they not won this yet! Oh my word! Slick one touch stuff. Porolo missed some sitters but he's put in a shift. Such an underestimated team. Pirlo's range of passing is delicious.

Italy > Germany IMO. People will disagree but I really think they're a better unit. Germany just don't impress me despite having some incredible players. They're far too mechanical and could use some of italy's creativity.

----

2-2 I guess. One of the best games I've seen in a while. I'm not sure if Nigeria were playing for a draw or italy were just pegging them back. In the end though a draw flatters nigeria IMO. That was an onslaught at the end.

In terms of team performance and even indivudual quality I think Italy are only behind Spain in Europe, the thing is though that the players don't always put in a shift, I've seen so many half arses performances that are so frustrating and irritating.

The Germans tend to have a less mercurial performance

I agree with you on the spain bit. But in competitive matches I've hardly seen italy slack off. Maybe in the cofeds cup qualifiers against brazil, okay. But when it counted they've been warriors. They completely suppressed spain in the cofeds cup semi-final, which is a huge improvement on their euro final. Many will argue that italy were the better side, and I agree. They have a fighting spirit which is difficult to match in any other team.

I like seeing the type of football they've played today. Always looking to get the ball moving, playing diagonals around the box, slicing defenses open. Why can't they get far? I also like the manager, I think he's a real gentleman. At least he looks the part. He's definitely a tactically equipped coach and it shows in the way italy set up and play.

In the past 3 years, I think italy have played better than germany in both friendlies and competitive matches. Yet you hardly see the press riding their cocks. Count them out at your own peril.

Spain are dire in Friendlys, fucked me over and always seem to, couldnt put more than 2 goals past Equitorial Guinea the other night, ended 2-1. :X

Knowing England we will go on to beat Germany after losing to Chile, Germany resting quite a few players also.

I could never understand the term "Friendly". Sure it's not for any sort of cup but surely even just pride in the jersey you are wearing means that losing should hurt just as much as a WC qualifier. I have never seen a rugby or cricket Test played for just shits and giggles.

For most of the smaller nations they actually do play with pride, hence why there are always so many odd results. A lot of the bigger nations use them to try out new tactics or fringe players before tournaments, though most clubs try and get nthere players out of friendlys so they are fit for "proper" competitions like the PL etc shame really

Most players and coaches would agree with you both. There is no such thing as a friendly. Even if pride is not a factor (which it always is), fifa rankings alone make teams wanna win.

Mendo I got the same gut feeling as you. Don't get me wrong, I've come to expect nothing from england. But looking at germany's last match they're sorely missing a striker and I'm not convinced of their false 9 system. If england can keep it tight at the back and get some service to rooney and sturridge I'm strongly leaning towards an england win.

Germany are resting Neur, Ozil and Lahm, Khedira is also out and he is trialing a few other players. England @ 2/1 might stick it into an accumulator, I am sure it will be taken more seriously than the Chile game though, it is the krauts after all. :D

Lol :D

I tend to stay away from betting after a short period of being addicted to it. More often than not I've seen friends lose a lot more money then they make, myself included. Even though the bookmakers are often right you know how the saying goes, "predicting football is a fools game".

Casino always wins in the end.

jagielka and smalling. pretty underwhelming.

no striker named for germany in their second, or perhaps 3rd tier squad.

i still think england will edge through it.

I'll be mainly watching Portugal tonight, want them to win, they're a good team, the WC would be poorer without them.

Might put the England game on the tablet, I have a feeling England will win this
