2004 Mushroom season( Victoria)

i dont want to confuse the the people new to mushroom hunting but Psilocybe australiana is another one to look out for.I found alot of these ones last season as well ,
they grow in the same environment that SUBS do and are of similar/same potency as subs and look a hell of alot like subs just alittle bit different....shorter , fatter , harder.
 
these pics were not taken by me...i never got around to photographing Psilocybe australiana.
Psilocybe australiana seems to have in my experience a fatter harder stem and are shoter then subs and grow in bigger clusters(meaning more shrooms attached to each other at the base more than what subs would) also the caps of Psilocybe australiana sort of shine more of goldy colour and subs have have a bronzey copper.

don't want to confuse people any more, but australiana, eucalypta and subaeruginosa are all subtypes of subaeruginosa... they are just varying versions of subaeruginosa - slight macroscopic differences (eg. some have large umbo's, others look like the wavy capped cyanescens, etc), but are microscopically identical
 
It depends of where they grow. Some patches have quite small shrooms, other are masive. I know of one place that they can reach 15-20 CM tall, I didnt believe they could be the same mushroom until they where eaten.
Note: I didn't commit this act of stupidity, someone else was game to try them.
 
it really depends on the location - substrate, drainage, etc.. and maybe genetics.

average of the ones i found were prolly 3cm diameter caps, maybe smaller... so fairly small... but damn potent! dont let their size fool you, often the smaller ones are more potent than the larger ones.

i did find several huge sub's which looked quite peculiar... the caps were long and not all that wide (as though they should have opened up but didnt)... they were perhaps 5cm diameter by 7cm tall (just the caps!)
 
It should be said that the mushrooms mongman is talking about were found in pine forests where there isn't the same 'environmental elements' present as in the city suburbs.
When i went out into these pineforests to pick these i was actually quite sus, but our other friend was positive, so i re-trained my eye and all was good =D... it was VERY good =D ;)

Damn you Hardicus. We just got back from a hunt and we discovered a motherload =D
So tempted to eat, but i have so much damn homework.

Psychedelic_Paisly - Honestly i've never seen a sub grow much bigger than the biggest one in that pic without getting rotten or drying up and stopping growing, so I pick away. Sometimes they appear bigger but it's more the cap just flattening (got a few of them today, rotten though, not photogenic ;))As for the smaller ones in that pic, well yeah, I woulda let them grow, but I wasn't gonna be going back for a while and I got a little carried away. If it's any consolation I left a fair few babies behind.

My rule of thumb is that if the veil has broken, they are OK to pick.

[edit: But damn, looking at those pics mongman posted, I think I need to get me some new spots :O) Nice wavy caps :D
 
yea hardicus' dont look too juvenile to the ones i've picked in the past... most of those i found were exactly like his, and if i left it any later, they'd most likely get rained on again and go rotten. some sub's tend to be like that, others (wavy caps in general) tend to open up more readily and look bigger
 
I always end up find the wavy caped kind for some reason. I rarely pick ones that don't have almost flat caps (other than the nipple).
 
Lucky bastards, I was sure my spot would deliver the goods and after about 2 hours of getting my jeans dirty I gave up and went to look for a new spot, but no luck. Heaps of other mushrooms about though..

Now we've got a big high pressure system coming in which will undo all the good work the recent rains have done.

Mother nature is laughing at us :|
