BBC 3 Thurs 9pm - How ecstasy Works 13/1/2011

I watched the first half last night and will be finishing it off later on tonight. So far it makes good viewing.

Picking up on the Leah betts issue, I was at school when that story hit the news and it was hammered down our throats for years during our drug education classes. I don't think anyone in authority will ever publicise the other side to the story, as it will undermine the message they have been sending out to thousands of kids.

The coverage of the second girl was misplaced because her liver problem would render her incapable of breaking down many drugs, not just MDMA.

Covering her story is akin saying roads should be illegal because a blind or deaf person got run over one time crossing the road.

^^yeah, but I think the point was that you're never sure of your reaction in case you have some undetected underlying condition.

Fuck that shit, i can't watch these stupid doc's without cringing. The *only* good thing about bbc3 is that it doesn't broadcast in the daytime. Horrible channel, filled with shite.

I thought it was good. But the part about the guy that died in Brighton I thought was pointless and didn't need to be shown. So the guy used mdma, then decided to go out on a massive binge and die. As unfortunate as that is, I don't see what relevance his death had to mdma.

Pretty much the same story with the other deaths as well, seeing as neither were from actual mdma use (from what I gather).

Yeah, that girl with the bad liver was warned that she had damaged it in Ibiza, then she ignored that and continued taking drugs until she needed a transplant. It is unfortunate still but I don't really think it should have been on a program about MDMA.

I guess without those stories they would have had basically nothing bad to say about mdma. And they can't be airing a documentary on the BBC about an illegal drug without a fair amount of negative points to balance out the positive ones.

Yeah it was pointless showing that death. It was clear that it was the cocktail of substances that killed him . His dad showed a picture of him stood behind the decks wearing headphones and said it was evidence of where his life was heading. Of course no disrespect is intended to his family. I dont see how a picture of the guy DJ'ing is evidence of his drug use though.

All DJ's are druggies. Ruth Flowers is the queen of speedballing.

worst side effects I've ever had from MDMA usage (usually alongside LSD or 2CB) is extreme sleep paralysis - to the point where in the days following taking the drugs Im scared to go to sleep because of the nightmare I know's waiting for me and that I'll get about an hour or so of sporadic sleep and wake up feeling more exhausted than before I went to bed. Didn't see them mention anything about that. That's the only real negative side to MDMA that I've seen really, and even then that only happens when I go overboard in a night/week.

those mdma nightmares i usually really sweat buckets throughout the duration, and am aware im in a dream yet i feel paralised and cant stop it or wake myself out of it or get up out of bed. its really strange. i was getting a few days ago, due to taking three times in the previous fortnight. it usually happens midweek after ive taken. ironically i used to get this sort of the thing exactly the same when i was a regular user and caned it, and now after so long of not having, three times in the last fortnight and again last week midweek i kept falling in and out of sleep and was getting it all over again like along time ago. its definitley the mdma

Yeah thats actually probally the only side effect I get from mdma, and it only usually happens when I do it 2 nights on the run or over a long period of time with no sleep.

sounds mad but I though about never wanting to sleep again, and then the more you dont sleep the worse it gets, like as soon as you start nodding off i get these extreme night terrors, had to sleep with the frigging light on haha is actually very scary see some scary stuff and its like your awake

other than that i dont really get come downs, just dont feel UP anymore so to speak, i always feel 100% fine the next day if ive had a good 10 hour sleep or so, sometimes the day after though feel like im about to cry when i see something really sad lmao strange

I occasionally get sleep paralysis (not in relation to MDMA usage at all) but can snap myself out of it by kinda making rapid eye movements and slowly snapping my head around when I can. It's scary but I could imagine it being really scary for people that are trapped in the state.

are you sweating alot while your having the nightmare mattronik?, because thats something ive definitley noticed for me, and also the feeling compleley paralised like totally numb. im half conscious and want to wake up completley out of it, but my body wont move and i have to lay there and just let the nightmare carry on, its like a semi conscious state i can usually feel my heart pounding quite fast as well. its strange because you forget these things but as ive only recentley experienced it again after what feels like a good few years, its brought it all back to me now. it was normality for me when i was a regular mdma caner many moons ago

What was the actual story behind Leah betts? didn't she just end up guzzlng pint after pint of water and that's what fucked her up? I was quite young when it happened so I just got the 'she took a bad pill' bullshit story

Worst effects I ever got off MDMA was pulling a fit bird at the rave and not being able to come in her face later!
Really started my comedown that :)

There is a Leah Betts article on Wikipedia.

I have so far seen about two thirds of the programme and will watch the rest later on.

My impressions so far are largely the same as those already mentioned in this thread.
Regrettably the risks of mdma use are not placed in any context (e.g. risk of liver damage due to mdma compared to risk due to alcohol abuse)
Also disappointing is that so far there has been indication of how mdma use might be made safer.
We see two kids redosing after several hours, common behaviour perhaps, but really not recommended, and to my mind a shame that no comment was made to that effect.
As for the liver transplant girl, one must wonder to what extent her liver failure could be attributed to mdma use. She is supposed to have used "ecstasy" in Ibiza that had no effect on her apart from making her unwell. She could have taken rat poison as far we know!
No drug testing message either, shame.
Nice to see Nutt talking sensibly and an indeed an amazing archive of pills! :)

mattronik

totally off topic but glad i'm not the only person who reads that. was surprised when i finally read it as notrik.

still not watched this. will do eventually.

as for bad effects from md- i do get suicide tuesdays, but only with more frequent use. i also can't stand up without blacking out at the end of a night on it/the next day. i have to just take any movements really slow, hit my head a few times falling down and really freaked a few people out. didn't get it on sunday though i ate nothing on saturday so its not lack of sugar. get it with mephdrone too. i don't think thats healthy.
