Bupe Suboxone/Buprenorphine FAQ & Megathread v2; 2010

Yes! I got my first constipation yesterday from Subutex. Hee-hee. I've never been constipated in my life mainly because I usually pass watery stools. But, ever since I've been on the opiates, my stools firmed up.

And for the first time in my life, I actually require a laxative to go yesterday! It worked within the hour, and that was great. So, it really was a new experience for me :D

I have to disagree with the post above me, and i have taken both. The Subutex has to be taken after at least 12 hours (to be safe) I'v done 8 and 9, and things were dandy. I have also taken as little as 1 mg 3 hours after 2 lines of some weak dope, and i started sweating and got a headache, lasting for a few hours before being able to sleep. I still remember well my friend who gave me my 1st Subu telling me 2 things: Do not swallow it, as it wont work And Never take it before at least 8 hours, cause you'll get double the normal w.d's

What post?

Subutex and Suboxone have the same possibility for precipitated WD, you are correct. I have also taken both, and find identical effects at the same dosage.

It's pretty common knowledge (at least 'round these here parts) that you need to wait until you are at least in mild opiate withdrawal before taking bupe/sub or you run the risk of putting yourself into a nasty precipitated withdrawal which isn't a whole lot of fun.

As for swallowing, again, bupe has very low bioavialability when swallowed so won't work. Bioavailability varies depending on route of administration ranging from IV, intranasal, rectal to sublingual.

Bottom line; if you want to start taking bupe/sub, wait until you are at least in mild withdrawal from the last time you took another opiate then stick it under your tounge and let it dissolve. That way you should avoid almost any precipitated withdrawal.

Ooops, my bad...it was a reply to some guy who was talking about the naltrexon and that you can take Subu and take H afterward and nothing will happen to you, don't really get his point. Anyways, the question that i'm still looking to answer is why did i (and a friend's opinion too) prefer Subutex to Subuxone (sub-lingual) in kicking years of H habit? Of course, both are heavenly compared to Tramadol back in the days, which was the only thing available for H wd's (Rohypnol or clonazeoam added too) if u wanted to do it yourself where i was from. Last time at the doc, i tried to get an explanation, but he didn't have it. My main concern was him prescribing me the Subutex and not Suboxone. I remember well with box, i was still getting my nose stuffed, sleep hours distortion and some general uneasiness, mainly in the first few days. I was even doubting my doses. So, if you have anything to say about those differences, i'll be more than glad to hear.

I'm not exactly sure why you perceived a difference, I don't really have an explanation for it.

It could just be the difference in severity of withdrawal symptoms.

@Captain Heroin: thanks for the advice. I gotta say, I think throwing a stimulant into the mix at the moment would be a risky proposition. Stims do tend to work paradoxically on me because of my ADHD but have always hindered sleep for me big time.

Likewise for psychedelics. I don't think I'm in the right headspace to be tripping right now and the last thing I need is to wig out, particularly when benzos won't KO me if I really start to freak. I think I'll just keep plodding away.

I'm going to have to explain to my Dr how I went through 250mg of Valium in three days tomorrow which I know he's going to be pretty concerned about (to be honest, so am I). I think I'll need to start to taper from next week.

I still have a very 'groggy' head after waking up (2pm local time) but that's par for the course. Once I get up and moving and eventually go for a run, my head should clear.

Thanks guys, things are looking up!

I feel you. Your doctor might want to let you try a different benzo, since a quarter gram of diazepam is still a lot to go through. Some people just get less out of a certain benzo than others.

Yeah, stimulants and psychedelics can definitely be a gamble, especially when coming down/etc.

I never seemed to mind though! =D %)

There should be no difference in the effectiveness of Subutex and Suboxone as they are essentially exactly the same thing. The only difference is that Suboxone has naloxone in it but this does absolutely nothing.

It could be that you took the Suboxone too early after your last dose of your opiate of choice which put you into withdrawal. It could also be placebo. Finally, it could be that you have some sort of allergy to naloxone but I've never heard of this (not sure if it's even possible).

Bottom line: there is no practical difference between Subutex and Suboxone so there is no difference in the effectiveness of these two drugs.

I am FINALLY getting down to the tail end of my suboxone taper, seems likes forever since i have been doing this for so long and been on sub total of 18 1/2 months. Tomorrow i start taking 1/2mg daily. Realistically, can i be suboxone and withdrawal free by christmas without any major withdrawal, if so how should i handle this last few dose cuts. I have the Strips so i can cut up small accurate doses, and i have gabapentin and clonidine at my disposal. I can't get anything else because i am living at my girlfriends aunts house in chicago and all of my connects are back in Jersey, however either way i am focusing on sobriety so i am avoiding anything i am not prescribed anyway. I know i will still have PAWS at christmas, but i am moving to SanFrancisco shortly there after and would like to be off of suboxone by then, but if this isn't possible without having heavy w/d by mid to late January is fine. Any advice?

Eat enough food, and exercise. Try to have a support network, and a busy schedule.

OTC antihistamines might be helpful.

I have been sober for 60 days on Monday so my appetite is optimal, my strength is back up and i have been rock climbing at a gym 3-4 days a week, biking and weight lifting 2-3 days/week, Either NA or AA twice a week plus an after care support group once a week at the outpatient program i attended. i Need to work on my schedule because in between all of that is a lot of sitting around watching movies, but otherwise i am doing great, more healthy than i have been in 3 years!

Do you have any specific advice on dosing schedule from here on out? once again tomorrow i cut down to 1/2mg. Regardless thanks for the response.

0.5 mg per day is a low dose to begin with. I would try stabilizing on that dose, and then dropping down to 0.25mg if you can get it to split up evenly.

If you're taking it sublingually, jumping off of 0.5mg or 0.25mg when you feel ready to shouldn't be too hard either.

That's great you're already getting in quality exercise though! That goes a long way.

Can't emphasise that enough.

I've just been for another run and simply cannot overstate how powerful exercise is for overcoming withdrawals. If you've been following my story, you'll see I've gobbled down a whole lot of benzos, weed, clonodine and lope but nothing has been anywhere near as effective as getting off my ass and going for a run.

I'd go at least a week at 0.25mg if you can. I jumped off at 1mg and had really nasty WDs for several days. It's been a bit over a week and I'm only just starting to recover.

Otherwise, sounds like you're doing all the right things. The meetings and exercise will help a lot. The only other piece of advice I have is get yourself busy. If you sit around all day you'll end up thinking about how bad you feel or having cravings. Getting out and about will take your mind off things which is hugely important.

@Captain: thanks for the advice. I'll take it up with my Dr tomorrow.

One quick question: I'm pretty blocked up from the lope and was wondering if there's any danger in taking some Senoket (laxative) to flush me out. Is this dangerous or likely to increase the effects of the nausea I'm feeling?

Thanks!

The only laxative like products I have used are stimulant drugs, and the above link about liquid ionic trace minerals. I'm sure that using laxatives would be fine, but I'm not sure if the one you're talking about would increase nausea at all.

For me, I have only found nausea with stimulant drugs. The liquid ionic trace minerals I used do not induce nausea at all.

Oh dear. Day two, constipated :(

I hope this constipation is related to my recent bout of viral infection, rather than the Subutex. Because, when I took the laxative, I felt quite nauseous afterwards. And today, I've decided to just wait and see rather than panic and take the laxative.

I think I'm starting to see why people find the constipation utterly horrid.

I think I just discovered a (very) small trick for anyone still in the 'upchuck' phase of withdrawals...

I was at the supermarket and saw this shit on special called 'Mintec for IBS'. It's active ingredient is peppermint oil and it claims to relieve abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, discomfort and wind.

Well, not only did it utterly fail to relieve any of those symptoms for me, I believe it caused me to throw up a couple of hours after I took it. However, instead of the usual disgusting acidic bile taste, my puke tasted almost exactly like peppermint (I'm 100% serious).

I'm pretty sure peppermint oil or pills containing it are pretty readily available so here's a tip: if you are puking constantly from withdrawal, take some of this shit and I guarantee the experience will be much more tolerable.

On the other hand, a bit dissapointed I puked since I thought I was over that stage. I did eat the biggest meal I've had since I stopped taking Suboxone so maybe it was more down to that.

Yeah I remember puking for months when I first got on Suboxone. ugh. I'm so glad I don't vomit anymore.

It's all right though, I'm sure you won't be vomiting too much anymore if you can still manage to eat. :)
