addiction is a very relative thing. you've mentioned already that you have a border-line addictive personality. opiates take these problems and intensify them to the nth degree you may very well be an addict before you ever try these drugs. can you quit smoking pot? do you smoke pot in the morning before you even eat breakfast? these are tale tale signs of trouble in the near future.

while we're on the topic though, i would really check and double check to determine if the opium you're smoking is actually opium and not heroin because unless you grew it yourself or get a piece of someones personal grow i would doubt you're getting actual opium. its becoming inceasingly hard to find opium in their respective countries much less western countries. just my .02g

dude just try it once. don't use more than .5-1 gram for your first time using. Then don't use more than twice a week after that first time and including that first time.

obviously your tolerance will go up and you will need more and more opium for each session. Once you are using more than 2 grams per session you are really pushing it and I would be surprised if you aren't using every day at this point. Just take it slow and you should be able to control things.

^ this is bad advice...this last post it already heading on the path to addiction....

id say once a week max.....keep the using to once a month and you should be in the clear.....keeping in mind you dont start to smoke every day....and dont under-estimate O's WD's either they can be very bad.....

dont use it at work for the first time....

your better off trying it once....actually once....

I was planning on growing a few plants myself... It's not like weed; it's easy to grow, common, and legal.

Well I don't know where you live but in North America, and I have to believe most other countries around the world, papaver somniferum is quite illegal in most forms. In Canada and the States for instance you can purchase the seeds so long as you don't intend to grow it but that's all. True you could grow it, or purchase the bulbs for decoration, if you didn't know it was illegal...but I just told you ;) sorry.

So if I wanted to try it, if I smoke it once and then avoid it for a while I should be fine?

When you're dealing with addiction a lot more things come into play than the drug itself. Your personality, your experiences, why/when/how you use drugs, your compulsions... you gotta think long and hard about all of that if you think you have an addictive personality.

You could try it once or twice and absolutely hate it, and never touch it again. Or, you really might have that addictive personality , and while you're not addicted to anything yet, this could be that future drug-of-choice that you've been waiting for to fill the void.

Just tread lightly if you think you're the addictive personality type

OP, determining the likelihood of someone getting addicted to opium the first time is not like determining the likelihood of getting a blue marble out of a bag of blue and green marbles... It is not The Number Of Ways Event A Can Occur / The total number Of Possible Outcomes, it is Getting addicted / Genetic Predisposition x Social Pressure x Personality x BMI x Tolerance x X many other factors, The only way to find out is to try it.

^spot on, there's no way to determine it in advance and even when you have a lot of information, there are sill too many variables.

There is absolutely no good predictor of who will get addicted, the best indicator they have found for LIKELIHOOD of developing problematic use/addiction is the age someone starts... the earlier someone start using and the earlier someone gets into harder drugs, the more likely addiction is.

This isn't a hard and fast rule though, lots of people don't start using drugs until their life is turned upside down by an injury and they start coping with pain killers or drink socially for 30 years then all of the sudden some of other precipitating event leads to problem drinking... and conversely, there are young teens who do try hard drugs and don't continue using.

For one time use, physical dependence won't develop. You just might really like it and decide to do it more, and then addiction comes into play. One single time use isn't going to make you physically addicted, though.

^ keep in mind that physical addiction varies greatly from person to person......and it hards to know exactly when you will get sick for the first time.....

I think the only real variable in drug addiction is whether the person enjoys the drug or not. From my experience, only a certain percentage of people get a true euphoria from opiates. Same goes with meth, coke, and all other drugs.

I remember I shared hydrocodone with six of my friends in highschool. After 30min it was clear to me that only myself and one other girl were experiencing an opiate euphoria - the rest just felt "different."

So if you try opium, chances are that you might not even achieve that much of a euphoria from it. On the other hand, if you do, then you are in the category of people who are very susceptible to opiate addiction.

And that is not a path you want to take.

You may fall in love, and it may become the saddest lovestory of your life.
I wish i hadn't been as curious as i was in my life.
I think you are waiting for someone to give you the green light, but it won't be me.
Stay away from the pods, better to be curious, than hooked.
too many variables, like Cane allready told you

I actually think that you shouldn't. The whole mindset you seem to have (I will try it once and then never/rarely ever) is the telltale sign of a soon to be addict. First of all, do not try a drug just to do it once - you probably wont. Do not make scheduals, have it as a spice in your life, not a "goal". I myself have periods where I do drugs more than usually without problems, and then I have times were I rarely do them but feel a constant crave. My method is to only do them when I don't really think about them. But it is really hard.

Hope you enjoy it responsibly!

Like more or less everyone has said, we can't tell if you will become addicted. Physicaly after one use, no. But mentally, I'd say there is a possibility.
I have smoked heroin strictly once a month for 3 years. And only recently started doing more.... and more. I managed to hold off for a long long while and am trying to cut back again.
My point is there is no telling when you might slip....
Good luck with whatever you do though.

2 grams per day?? Is opium really like 10% morphine? I could have sworn it was alot stronger than that even if it wasn't processed(so to speak) correctly.
