Opioids What's the likelyhood someone would be addicted to opium the first time?

If someone tried opium and has a slightly addictive personality (gets addicted to one in 10 things at best) what would be the odds of them being addicted immediately?

it would be impossible to be physically addicted with just one use of opium....even mentally i have a hard time seeing....however, if it is loved and then continually used, addiction will occur.....

the first time you may believe your mentally addicted (your not), it will be easier to stop now then any other time...

So if I wanted to try it, if I smoke it once and then avoid it for a while I should be fine?

^ exactly.....

in reality opium is weaker than alot of much stronger opiates and opiods.....

I'm just gonna guess that you're talking about mental dependence.

Assuming they've never done anything similar before, once they've smoked it (or what ever) they will always have the feeling it gives off instilled into their mind, constantly sitting back there reminding them how amazing it was. (That is if they indeed had a good experience from it and enjoyed it, not sure why they wouldn't of)

I've had stuff I've only wanted to try once, but I ended up falling in love with how the feeling was so much that I ended up doing it over and over again, which in return lead to dependence.

^ this is the issue...

once you know how something feels...and you love it...its always in your mind, and you want to use over and over again to experience this pleasure....

you end up chasing that "high"

^ Is that a mental dependency? I never really knew what that felt like.

This.

I got addicted to heroin before I ever tried it. The first opioid I ever used was oxymorphone and it was something someone gave to me and I had no idea what the fuck it was, but that once use set the seed for my opioid addiction and when I tried heroin much later it brought everything back and I became addicted to heroin nearly instantly. Mental addiction is much more serious than any physical dependence and it is the mental piece that really hooks you. Fuck anyone who tells you otherwise.

^ its defiantly a combo of both.... i agree that you can always get through the physical part, and its the mental part that will keep you hooked....however, it is usually the combo of both mental and physical that keeps you using.....was for me, thats for damn sure....

wouldnt it be peachy if you only had a physical addiction, and you could just stop using, go thru WD, then just be perfectly fine with no drug use...... thats not reality....

^ it is very possible to enjoy opiates once or on occasion. we cannot make this choice for you.....you need to look deep inside and make the choice yourself....

^ Well I have a moderately addictive personality. Then again I also am good at just stopping things without weaning or anything. IDK SO HARD TO CHOOSE :!

So it's best just to stay away from the stuff?

You only live once, minds well enjoy it, just take the advice given to you, don't use everyday multiple times for weeks or months in a row and you should be fine, because even mental addiction wouldn't be unmanageable if your using say once a month or less. Just be safe!

I too am good at the cold turkey method when it comes to things, I used to take Xanax everyday for a year, and before that I was taking it for 2 years quite heavily (usually around 6mg, even up to 10mg). I quit that habit cold turkey and have never had one problem with it (I STRONGLY recommend no one do this, I'm lucky I didn't get any of the physical withdrawals that comes with Xanax).

I've also smoked countless numbers of cigarettes, and yet I never want them, just something I do every now and then for the hell of it.

On the other hand, what I have become addicted to mentally, and physically are Opiates/Opioids. I hate the physical withdrawals but I can get through them just fine, but after I do, my mental dependence is right there telling me I gotta have some more, and I'm back on them in no time.

I am one of those "live fast die young" individuals myself, so I've tried plenty of substances in my life time, and again, the only ones I've been addicted to are Opiates/Opioids.

Yeah don't go off ANYTHING cold turkey after heavy use. It can easily cause death or irreversible coma/brain damage. By the shitting way (wtf?) would one be fine in an environment where if you got caught using drugs you'd be in a fuckton of trouble if you were on opium? My working environment doesn't require drug testing at all but I would be shunned and removed if they noticed I was stoned on something..

For fuck's sake, don't do it at work! If you're going to try the stuff, at least set some time aside where you don't have commitments. The last thing you want is to be nodding out at work. This is a particular issue as you don't know your tolerance.

If you must try it, get a friend in case something bad happens to you, go to a hassle-free environment and then give it a crack.

EXACTLY! This is what you need to consider. You will definitely not get hooked from one use, but one use could be the gateway to a future dependance.

Heroin has about a 30% capture rate. Meaning 1 out of 3 people who try it ONCE will become addicted. They do not become addicted the first time they try it, but the first use is the catalyst for their addiction.

I know you're talking about opium not heroin, but it's something to consider. Honestly though, most opium sucks and isn't worth a salt. But if its really good ope....
