Study: Alcohol more harmful than heroin, cocaine

"We cannot return to the days of prohibition,"

Now this part pissed me off. Prohibition is still going on just not with alcohol. Last time i checked i can't go to the local gas station and buy heroin, crack, powder cocaine, cannabis, ketamine or LSD! So all those drugs are phohibited!

Funny thing is i have to walk much less to get cocaine or cannabis then i do to get hammered at the local dingy depressing bar that should really have "abandon all hope ye who enter" wrote on it's door :| . Ever notice that being around alcoholics is only bearable when you are drunk yourself?

Also why can't anyone spell methamphetamine corrrectly? Like wtf it only took me one try to spell it write and i don't even have any journalist degree. Fuck sakes :p

This study seems quite similar to what is discussed in this British documentary from 2008:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6108672696241807159&hl=en#

The documentary also goes ahead to cite that binge drinking (ie: 2 bottles of wine over the weekend) is much worse for your brain, than just being drunk 24/7. This is due to large amounts of Glutamate being released after you stopped drinking, and the excitotoxicity which follows.

Anyone know if antioxidants protect against glutamate damage? If not, what does? Google isn't helping with this :p

I saw this reported on the evening news on whichever network (cbs I'm pretty sure) my tv was tuned to. It surprised me not on the results but that it was reported on the mainstream media.

This one is better ;)

Taurine does: I'm almost positive. I'm pretty sure B6 can't hurt either as IIRC it's a co-factor for the breakdown of glutamate.

Prescription route takes you to lamotrigine maybe, as well as some other stuff that may or may not interact with the alcohol.

Ironically, one of the quickest remedies is a bloody mary.

Edit: actually (I forgot), there's a medicine specifically indicated for this: acamprosate.

I heard it on ESPN radio of all places.

It doesn't make much sense to justify making illegal drugs legal simply because the most dangerous drug of all is legal already. If anything, this study furthers the case that the public can not handle using legal intoxicants responsibly. But I don't believe that making drug use a crime is the right answer.

what about all the taxpayer money wasted annually on the retarded drug war, prosecuting & incarcerating drug offenders. that's a lot of billions they spend on DEA, task forces, etc alone!

Drug harms in the UK: a multicriteria decision analysis
Prof David J Nutt FMedSci a , Leslie A King PhD b, Lawrence D Phillips PhD c, on behalf of the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs

Background
Proper assessment of the harms caused by the misuse of drugs can inform policy makers in health, policing, and social care. We aimed to apply multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) modelling to a range of drug harms in the UK.

Why doesn't this dangerous man come clean and admit he wants to legalise drugs? Read

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/a...tt-come-clean-admit-wants-legalise-drugs.html

comments to Steven Glover anyone?

Professor David Nutt and colleagues have produced a paper which argues that alcohol is far more dangerous than Class A drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine.

No less preposterously, they also suggest that alcohol is three times more harmful than cocaine or tobacco.

Because the article is published in The Lancet, a respected medical journal, and has been widely reported in near reverential terms elsewhere, some people may be tempted to take it seriously.

lol and I thought the american media's anti drug rants were bad

The UK's media is 100x worse. Is the guy that wrote this article mentally retarded.

I could not keep reading after the 1st two paragraphs. It's obvious the moron that wrote the article does not even know what objective data acquisition is, and seems to believe popular opinion is fact. Laughable.

article said:
Show me a moderate heroin addict. Perhaps you know some. I don’t.

There's me, my wife (sometimes) and most of the junkies I call friends.

Show me a Daily Mail columnist who isn't a dildo. Perhaps you know some.

i'd consider myself an occasional to moderate opiate user (never addict as it hasn't caused me an addiction). On average I'd say I consumer opiates 4-5 times a month with most of the use being one after the other.

"But the really interesting thing is that, having in their view established that alcohol is the most dangerous drug of all, they do not say it should be banned.

For the logic of their faulty argument is that alcohol should be a Class A drug. Actually, it should be in a category all of its own, above even heroin or crack cocaine."

David Nutt is not you, you stupid asshole.

By the very definition, you can't be 'moderately addicted.' It's nonsense. It's like saying someone is half dead. No, it's one or the other and I'm sure there are plenty of people who use heroin moderately. If we're going down that line though, why don't we discuss ecstasy or LSD which are physically non-addicting?

Good to see the comments are very anti the article though. Has restored my faith in the world if the Daily Mail commenters can see through ignorance so easily.
