FIFA World Cup 2010

There's no point in thinking about the impossible Cbrox, you won't beat Slovenia.

Cletus, I don't know what press you've been reading but I've hardly heard anything outside of the Star and the Sun saying England are going to win it. Most serious commentators have been saying semi finals at best.

England's problem is they don't know how to beat sides who set out to defend. We don't have the creativity of a Messi, Iniesta, Kaka, Schnieder etc. What we do have is players who can play at 100mph and steamroller teams (a la Premiership) yet for some reason the England team discard the Prem way of playing and try to become all "cultured" and stylish. Which doesn't work.

We'll struggle massively v Slovenia as they only need a draw to qualify so they'll be parking the bus. We need to play 3 upfront, we need to drop Rooney (cuz he's been shite and the cunt has the front to moan about the fans..fucking whinging scouser) and we need to play at 100mph. It won't be pretty, but pretty football is for latin american hair band wearing jessies. Innit. :)

I imagine Rooney has taken a real slating in the press for his comments about the fans yesterday?

That saddened and disappointed me, I'm not a fanatical England fan, but living here I want them to do well.

CbRoXiDe: hard to tell - if you beat Slovenia you'll have 5 points, but if the USA beats Algeria they will too, so you could finish first or second, depending on goal difference (you have to win by more than the USA to finish first). Finishing second should theoretically put you up against Germany, but now they've lost to Serbia, they might not top their group.

We'll know more after Australia play Ghana today. If Ghana win, they will have 6 points, Serbia and Germany 3 each. Making it quite likely that all 3 teams will finish on 6 points (I'm assuming Serbia beat Australia and Germany beat Ghana). But if Ghana can hold Germany, and Serbia beat Australia, it will finish Ghana 7, Serbia 6, Germany out =D.

Basically, you could play anyone. Hell, if Australia turn good and beat Ghana, then all teams in that group will have 3 points and you could even end up getting Australia.

Yeah, living here it's been really noticeable that most people don't expect England to win. Whereas in 98, there was a much stronger feeling that England could do well. This year is much more hope than expectation.

You don't have to pretend, as a foreigner you want them to get beat as much as us Scots do. ;)

Nah mate, I would have said that once, but it just strikes me as pettiness and small-mindedness now. I'll back the English and the Aussies when they play, certainly my English hosts. (I'll never support the England rugby team, but that's another story ;)).

I'm going to come out here and say: I can still see England making the semis. Beat Slovenia, avoid Germany in the next round, and there's a very good chance that they'll get through. It does seem unlikely based on what we've seen, but the players are better than their performances so far. (And remember 1990? England started pretty badly then...)

but the players are better than their performances so far.

Indeed!
I don't think England are an amazing team and I don't think we'll win, but I'm sure they can play much better than we've seen. The match against USA wasn't so bad but the Algeria match was just BAD. Boring and unimpressive.

I have started to tune out the noise from those damn horns. It is annoying though, I enjoy hearing the noise of the crowd, makes it more exciting somehow but now that's all drowned out.
Ah well, before too long someone will chuck one on the pitch and they'll be banned :)

I'm not sure why, as far as I could tell he was complimenting them...

"It's nice to hear you home fans! Booyah! Shows what loyal support is!" :D

I'd rather be petty and small minded than support the useless English. ;)

I'd say at this point, with all the crazy matches with teams winning who should NOT be winning - there is NO good prediction. Anything can happen at this point. These matches are ridiculous. I'm watching Ghana vs AUS and am in awe with what I'm seeing.

I don't blame you.

Has to be more interesting than supporting useless Scotland.

That was a good match, particularly the second half.

the 2nd half of the ghana vs dingos match was top notch, aus are not having a good time of it with red cards

What press? I'm talking about the English as a nation, whether it be the pundits on telly or the nob jockeys I work with & there are loads of them.

Although I'll give the English people some credit, you did show some incredible lack of faith in the team after the USA game & now you are all showing the same level of defeatism that we always get after Scotland gets humped.

You drew both games FFS, it could have been a whole lot fucking worse you know. Toughest gig in sport is keeping you lot happy :D

Heh, last night was so awful that after an hour noone in the pub could even manage the enthusiasm to shout at the telly anymore ;)

I suppose with surprise defeats for Spain and Germany, France pretty much out and Brazil looking somewhat unconvincing vs a bunch of 1000/1 no-hopers it doesn't seem quite as bad.

Agreed btw, the Aussie match was mint entertainment.

Cletus, you must work with some wierdos! :) Everyone I know reckons we're shite!

As for the USA thing, (a) they are a pretty good team and (b) we would have beaten them if Green hadn't dropped a bollock and Heskey was a real striker. I was happy with the draw...but not happy with the shite from last night.

Problem with you sweaties is that it's so long since you had anything remotely resembling a football team that you just have to spend your time being negative about any enthusiasm (however misguided it might be) shown by some English supporters.

Personally I wouldn't dream of telling a Scotsman how we good we are...it's bad form in my book to mock the disabled. ;)
