VIOLENT revellers should face random drug tests, the Australian Hotels Association says.
The AHA's NSW branch has put up $100,000 for a six-month trial of random drug testing for people arrested for anti-social behaviour.
AHA NSW chief executive, Sally Fielke, said the Association wanted to work with police and the State Government to tackle the use of alcohol and illicit drugs.
She wanted to see police extend their random roadside drug testing program to cover those arrested in and around licensed premises.
Police Minister Michael Daley today said constructive proposals to combat illegal drug use were welcome.
But a testing program for every person arrested for an anti-social violence offence would be a costly and timely exercise for police, he said.
Fielke said while hoteliers were continuing to work hard on responsible service of alcohol provisions and other alcohol-related initiatives, they became virtually ineffective when drugs were thrown into the mix.
The AHA said it was difficult to develop policies to tackle anti-social behaviour when the role of illegal substances was unknown.
