Portland has a doughnut shop called VooDoo doughnut or something, they have everything from Maple Bacon doughnuts to Pepto Bismol flavor (and color).

whathe...I missed Hawai'i???

Its funny I knew you all were talking about HI when I saw "spam," and "sugar canes and marijuana" lol

Actually I hear meth has become the DOC for most people since Gov Lingle started cracking down on herb but as far as I know all my friends are potheads not crackheads :)

MC-Filipinos rule the state lol

Btw I abhor spam!! Everyone here does love it though. And I mean LOVE it! Its crazy.

There is definately a lot of racism against white people. Good thing I'm so brown lol
"Haoles" (pronounced how-lee, or if you're really mean, ha-oh-lay) is usually the term. Roughly translated; someone without "ha" or breath/soul. Its not totally about the color of someone's skin though. I think what natives to the island really hate are the people that disrespect the land by littering and building huge hotels, condos and "mainland" business' that take away from the locals.

On the opposite end there is a huge community of hippies that are usually total extremist. I'm talking wont eat fruits and vegetables on the same plate, anti-everything hippies. Its pretty annoying IMO. Where I grew up hippies were just the kids who smoked pot, went to concerts, and ate acid in their basements. Here hippies are just fucking weird.

As for the weather- before I came here someone told me there were 7 different types of terrain on the island (Maui) and there definately are a lot! There are some parts that are desert-like, really hot, never rains, lots of cacti lol. There's the warm, cool, sunny, beachy parts where tourists mainly stay. There's the rainforest where it rains all the time, and there's tons of rainbows :) As for me, I live up high on the mountain, basically in the clouds. Its kinda cold, misty.

One of the things I love the most about living here is that there is still soo much natural wonder. I love going swimming at a local waterfall and eating fresh fruit right off the tree. Camping is the absolute best!

What else?

As for Colorado-we might be going there for my family reunion next year so for those of you that know the area where is the best part to stay? what are the funnest things to do?

LoveAlways- I just got back from Colorado.......

What time of year are you going?
I am no expert on the state but I would recommend checking out Estes Park,Rocky Mountain National Park,Breckenridge was cool......
I like boring stuff like panning for gold and just stopping here and there to take pictures.
I wanted to go horseback riding and saw ALOT of ads for rafting.
Some of the places I checked out for horseback riding were offering other things like , what is it called? zip cords? I forget- but there are alot of cool places in the mountains.
I saw Red Rocks and thought it was nice but once we got into the Rockies it sort of put Red Rocks low on the list of exciting things we saw......Vail is overrated but the drive around there is beautiful.
Where is the reunion?

Maybe in the early 90s

I was warned about the Hawaiian ice epidemic in elementary school drug 'education' in the early nineties. The stats I saw on meth use in Portland were from the early to mid 2000s.

Aye...mmmmm.

Oh. PDX (Portland) is quite bike friendly, with ample lanes, motorists (and cyclists) who know what they're doing, etc. It rivals the East Bay (and wider Bay Area and Eugene), both rated top in the country (both in the top three, one number one, not recalling which)). Great mountain biking real nearby.

PDX is hipster-central, particularly SE, but more and more so, the adjacent section of NE. For a few years, they've actually set the (st00pid) trends, and even San Francisco has been following. Fix gear bikes w/ silly 'bull horn' handle-bars and a three-spoked wheel on the back (and only the back), 'indie' rock (the Decemberists are from here), PBR, parliament cigarettes, pseudo-irony, and all that.

Oregon has the highest per-capita consumption of PBR of any state (not sure how current this is).

Our economy was based in logging and agriculture at one point, but then an intel-centric tech-boom. Now, it has one of the most unfavorable job-markets in the country.

Portland is one of the most segregated cities in the country. People tend to think that its almost all white and Asian, but it turns out that African Americans here are almost entirely relegated to North Portland (distinct from Northeast), and the post-industrial rot and general poverty that comes with ghettoization. This makes it easy for white liberals to claim that they're not racist, as they hardly need to encounter people of other races.

I forget, either Oregon or Washington now is the least religious state in the union, in terms of belief, affiliation, and church attendance. Did it help make me who I am? ;)

more later. . .

ocean-sept 10 is when we're going and i'm not sure where, one of my cousins lives there and she suggested it

our family loves to bike ride so that is great to hear!

I just learned that the men who founded Portland flipped a coin to choose the name.

They were East Coasters that had an affinity for Portland, Maine and Boston, Massachusettes.

I'm glad that the city was not dubbed Boston, Oregon.

oh...and those 'eco-terrorists' (is non-violent property-destruction targeting luxury goods 'terrorism'?) who fire-bombed those SUVs? Eugene, OR.

Yes. There is only one Boston. It has a history and a character whose shaddow would loom large over any other city with the same name.

Portland, Maine? Who knew or knows anything about it outside of Maine proper?

...just my opinion.

^ In Mississippi, they pronounce their state's name "Miss'ippi." Unwitting visiors who pronounce "Mississippi" as it's spelled will invariably (in my experience) be subjected to the clever retort "Mrs. Hippie? Is she married to Mr. Hippie?" 8)

that pronunciation is very limited to whoever you was around at the time. i have lived here a long time and me nor any of my family pronounces it that way. of course anyone leaving above I-10 in Ms is inbred as the saying goes a round my way. also miss-a-shitty has been used numerous times aswell

Yeah but if it was called Boston in the first place then no-one would know any different ;)
Know what I'm saying?

Love Always- It would be a beautiful time to go to the mountains!! All the aspens changing color! :) I am sure you would find a TON of outdoor things to do and there is a bike path that runs through the mountain/ski towns in Colorado that looks amazing- You might try googling it or asking your cousin if she lives in the mountains......It runs through Breckenridge up to Vail.....and probably beyond but that is as far as we followed it (it ran along the highway in places but lower than the highway along a river)

And yeah- Boston Oregon would be weird.
