^ In Mississippi, they pronounce their state's name "Miss'ippi." Unwitting visiors who pronounce "Mississippi" as it's spelled will invariably (in my experience) be subjected to the clever retort "Mrs. Hippie? Is she married to Mr. Hippie?" 8)

This may just be a southern thing as I think I pronounce it the same way.

Hawaii is a great place to live. I spent the majority of my adult life there. Some simple facts:

On Oahu there are 3 Interstate highways. They are interstate so Hawaii could get federal funding, even though they do not leave the state.

Hawaii has the largest populace of people who do not know how to swim. (I can dig up the source if need be)

Hawaii is the only state where caucasions have never been the majority.

Hawaii was once a monarchy, with king and queen. This was abolished when the US annexed Hawaii in 1889.

Hawaii did not become a state until 1959. If Obama was born 2 years earlier, he would not be eligible to be president.

Hawaii has the most state holidays.

^^Hawaiians love eating fried spam and egg with rice for breakfast, like most Filipinos ;) =D

LOL spam melting in your mouth? M&Ms melt in your mouth, spam not so much :)

NO I'm jk I like learning about all the cultural differences, especially diet=wise.

I have an off-topic question real quick. For the state of Missouri...I hear a lot of people pronounce it "Missour-a" with an 'a" at the end instead of the "i". Now I've been told that only people from Missouri are allowed to say it like this. Anybody know anything about this or what I'm referring to?

I lived in Kansas City, Missouri all of high school and summers in college. It is hard to find someone who lives in either Kansas City or St. Louis to pronounce Missouri "Missour-a". Most people I was around (everybody) pronounced it "Missour-e" (which is more fun anyway because it's closer to Misery for good jokes). Anyway, yeah, people in Southern Missouri pronounce it with an "a" sound. I reckon (stolen Texas word ;)) many in central Missouri pronounce it with an "a" as well... just not us city and Northern Missouri folk. ;)

Back to Hawaii! SPAM IS DISGUSTING (sorry mc <3). It's also the newest of the 50 states but I'm guessing everybody already knew that.

Oregon is very beautiful. Some of the most wicked mountain passes are leading from california into oregon. one I remember the most is cabbage hill. its something like 10 or 12 miles of 6% downgrade. 6% downgrade is the steepest downgrade allowed on an interstate highway.

Oregon is well known for its cannabis, but did you know that Portland has the highest per-capita methamphetamine use of any sizable metro area in the country?

While Oregon has earned a reputation for being filled to the brim with hippies and assorted liberals, it's actually roughly 50/50 Red/Blue on account of half the population being rural dwellers who tend to be quite conservative.

The sediment record suggests that a catastrophic earthquake in the area (attaining 8+ on the Richter scale, 100-200 mi. off coast) once every 300 years, and it's been roughly 300 years since the last one.

Crater lake is beautiful, and a great place to hide the bodies too:

We have arguably the best beer in the US, including Rouge.

^ I'm guessing 'bad thai food' is totally relative. I mean, I'm really lucky that there's a good Thai restaurant in Kansas but I'm guessing there are far worse areas for thai food than those in Portland. Cali's thai food has to be great. :)

I've only driven through a small portion of Oregon and it was very pretty.....similar to Washington with the dry almost desert like eastern side- green , lush western side..........
We just flew into Portland the other day as a pit stop on our way home from Colorado and my husband got an AMAZING photo of Mt. Adams, I will ask him to post.
(he got the window seat:()

That's all I got on Oregon.

Oregon: Bad weather

Sorta. If you can stomach the frequent yet intermittent downpours and very cloudy winters, you're rewarded with a near absence of properly cold temperatures and a fucking perfect summer (75-85 most of the time, low humidity)

shitty thai food

Which places? There are so many Thai restaurants that a few must be to your taste. Best Pad Thai that I've had was at a Vietnamese place in Northeast, actually.

crystal meth.

Also cheap and high quality, if you're into that. And it's not like you won't be able to find some stoners, if that's your thing instead. :)

I've heard Portland is the coolest city in America. You can find people smoking joints at the bus stations and walk up to a stranger, get into small talk, and finally wind up on the merits of DMT breakthroughs. I recently met someone (a BLer at that) that stays frequently in an herb shop/apothecary in Portland. I'm going to visit there sometime and perhaps move there.
