All of these bands that you guys say went bad after they became famous is because you are upset that everyone other than you knows about that band...you are put in that mindset that they suck after they get famous. They had to have been good in order to get famous so how did they turn bad? please explain.....

plenty of bands have not became shitty (as in changed their sound;either due to evolution of their music, trying to appeal to wider audience, or just plain lost their inspiration..ie mindless self indulgence)

they have tried to play out tool, but cant, and they dont change for anyone else, they have changed but i like the changes

they also tried to play out radiohead, but they weren't affected by it musically speaking.

it could have just been a change in my perception on waht music i "like" as well

Def Leppard, before they were famous, were an awesome underground british metal band with a few songs that rivaled Iron Maiden's early work. "Wasted", from their first album back in '79, is basically the best Iron Maiden song that never was. Then they were neutered into making crap like "Pour Some Sugar On Me". Man, the drivel that comes out of the singer's mouth during that song makes me dry heave. "I'm hot, sticky sweet, from my head to my feet!" God almighty, what the fuck do I need to hear that for in a rock song?

i thnik that with alot of bands the fact they became popular is not the point, many bands only have one ot two good albums in them- its just more noticable when they run out of ideas if they become famous

Good comment. My theory: most bands are together for years, struggling, trying to build a fanbase and write the first album. So their first album kicks ass. Case in point, the Stone Roses - took 'em ten years to write that album, near enough. Then the record company wants a new album in 18 months. All of a sudden, they aren't putting together an album from the 40 or 50 songs they've written over several years, but from the 10-12 they've written in the last 12 months. No wonder it's not so good.

Plus many people only have 2-3 good ideas.

Plus, they start doing coke, and have people telling them they're amazing, and start believing it.

I'm trying to think of some good examples that fit the original topic of this thread, no doubt I will eventually ;)

def leppard where never that good.

i wouldn't even call them metal.

more like rock/hardish rock that sold out and became glam rock.

the best iron maiden song that never was?

....put down the crack pipe.

the 1st iron maiden album was 100x better than the 1st def leppard album.

actually i'd say better than any def leppard album.

sure pyromania had the slick production but was really kinda soft/girl/glam metal.

which is cool if you're into that kinda thing but if you like "metal", and not glam metal, then iron maiden "el kabong's" def leppard with a guitar.

note: "el kabong" is refering to an old cartoon where a masked horse, who thinks he's zorro, clubs ppl in the head with a guitar.

Bad Religion may have put out a sub-par album or two, but they have never sucked.

I agree with that one. Very prolific, consistent band.

So one bad record equals suck? 8(

The Process of Belief, released two years following New America was awesome.

I'm not trying to make enemies here, because ever since I was a young atlas, I've had good friends who liked bad religion... But I don't get it.

I'm not very impressed by the lyrics
I'm certainly not impressed by the instrumentation
I'm ambivalent about the dude's voice

Am I missing something? If I thought atomic garden was trite, is there anything i should listen to to change my mind?

I wasnt all that impressed with the empire strikes first, but it still has a few good songs on it i.e. gods love and atheist peace. I am waiting for epitaph.com to put up a download from the cd they are recording right now(new maps of hell)
