This is a picture of the Amtrak routes. I couldn't remember where I has put this picture at first. But I love this map.

My cousins traveled to visit my family and I last year and now we all have prints of this up on our walls.

They had never traveled on the trains either but they had recently moved to the central Mich and have a home and some land near

railroad tracks.

They were fascinated with the trains and wanted to learn more about trains and traveling on them.

They traveled through many states and on the way back got delayed and rerouted several times because of all of the tornado's.

It wasn't recent but the tornado's were bad that year as well.

It is a fun way to travel around out there I have heard but I haven't been on a train in quite a while. lool.

There are many more tracks out there but the main highway seems to be on Amtrak. lool.

Yeah, it's disappointing how limited the Amtrak routes are but there are still some great sections, great places to go. The only bummer is that I get older, sleeping in coach all night gets to be more of a drag. Better if you have someone to snuggle up to 🤔

they were nice about it.

they could of just drove in less than half the time . . . .
but they really did want to see what the trains were all about.

That sounds like fun! Sleeper cars are a cool way to go. I really like the sound and rhythm of trains. It's relaxing, as long as you aren't in a big hurry

The history of US passenger service is kind of funny. It was the backbone of the country and there was plenty of routes available until the invention of the automobile. Slowly at first, the traffic that was using the railroads used cars and buses. The advent of air travel was the straw that broke the camels back and in the early 1970's railroads petitioned the ICC to stop passenger service in many of the larger railroads. Most just disappeared due to lack of ridership. The Federal Government created AMTRAK to consolidate as many of the routes as fit the budget the were given.

Here's a nice video of some of the early trains AMTRAK inherited in the beginning which are still currently running.

 
Next time I have phone and I hear the train coming I will get a video. May be boring but possibly entertaining for some and educational for others idk
What I'm sayin is I wanna contribute to this thread but may take some time.

Because they are basically government run services Amtrak and METRA do not own their own tracks, they run on tracks that are designed and owned by freight carriers and maintained for that service. High speed bullet trains require tracks that are designed and maintained for that service. Florida's Bright Line is the closest the US has that comes close to that quality of right of way (tracks). It is a corporate owned line, not a government run railroad.


 
Didn't know of the Florida train. And yes I know about the different tracks. I am just surprised that this country doesn't have more. But If this country will just give away trillions, that it doesn't have at least they could have projects to fix the infrastructure( yes I am aware Michigan roads are terrible)
But infrastructure repairs, highways bridges and build up the train services.
Flying is a Hassel, and more train service would be nice.

This is one video that is a bit troubling. A 17 Railfan/YouTube videographer threw a switch from a main line track to a RIP Track (Repair In Place) and caused a freight train to derail; all for Youtube clout.







He is being charged as an adult for a federal crime for this moment of fame. Don't do this at home, folks...
