The US is not really known for managing public health...it seems your politicians like to whip up moral outrage more than they like to resolve real world quality of life issues for regular working people or the disadvantaged. It’s those Puritan roots I guess. (No offence).

It’s funny that Catholicism is one of the strictest Christian religions, yet the biggest Catholic Countries allow Prostitution to be legal, and soft core porn on regular TV.

I think America has deeply protestant values like hard work, self-discipline, personal responsibility, thrift etc that create a culture that stigmatises anybody who seems to have failed at life (the unemployed, drug addicts, prostitutes etc etc).

That said, our conservative politicians often try to pathologise the unemployed and drug users in moral terms too. They seem to think there are deserving poor and undeserving poor and seek to punish the latter.

I argued that exact position ten years ago, when weed was basically legal nowhere on earth. At least, I didn't think it would happen in my lifetime.

It's amazing how fast some issues move! There has obviously been incredible movement on the issue over the last ten years, both in the United States and internationally. The next project (which has already begun in some areas) is, at the very least, decriminalization (but preferably legalization IMO) of psychedelic-hallucinogens. Opponents of cannabis legalization have often argued that the project is a trojan horse for the eventual weakening of prohibition in a variety of other substances, and I think they're right...I just think that's a good thing

Sorry that was all terribly off-topic I suppose but cannabis is just about the one and only issue I feel where we're just going up up up. As someone who lived through the 90's and much of the early 2000's and knows how the issue was discussed during that time, it's remarkable to me how much its changed.
