I don't quite follow. I know that China isn't the most democratic of counties, but you've all been happy to lap up their mass produced cheap shit thus far. Plus you're all happy to call Ling Plong Flongs on a friday night to stuff your fat titties on deep fried meat of indeterminate nature. China isn't the only country that has shocking hygiene standards - have you ever seen a McDonalds kitchen? I rest my case...
You think I actually eat the shite they serve at McDonald's? Nah mate if it ain't Michelin star I ain't showing up.
Seriously though I will have the odd Pizza Hut especially after a fat spliff but I don't sink as low as Mucky D's. It just tastes like cardboard.
As for China it's very much an emotional rather than a rational thing. Objectively China has been doing bad shit for ages as I said. Human rights abuses too numerous to list, IP theft happening constantly (most often not publicly disclosed), propaganda machines running there and abroad (China practically owns Hollywood), the social credit system is the latest proper scary one... all sorts goes on.
The reason this is different is because it's not so easily put out of sight, out of mind. It's easy to forget things when they're happening in another country. You read an article or see it on the news, contemplate how sad it is for 10 seconds then move on with your life.
COVID-19 is not like that, it's gonna affect the whole world forever at this point. And as we speak people around the world are dying or losing jobs.
It is not abstract, it is a matter of our own lives. It's not just "oh China has death camps, read it in the news, they're bad... but hey their factories are cheap." It's now people seeing first hand the damage being done to their own families. It will change perceptions big time.
I'm looking at this as an analyst would. Said a few pages back I'm looking at the markets right now. Stock market is pretty much all emotions and not very much about facts and figures because it's driven by people. Those people also drive consumer spending decisions. They will be turned away from Chinese brands. That's my prediction. It could be wrong, but I think there will be a significant hit on China for this.
After all there's a reason they cared enough to cover it up in the first place and a reason they're even using their diplomats to spread propaganda and shift blame to the US. They care about this so much because they know that any damage to their reputation in any way that Western people actually care about will damage their economy and they can't have that. If they are not the world's factory they have no money, no leverage, no power.
Ultimately that's what it comes down to. On our end, first hand experiences leading to emotional responses and realisations of just how bad China is. On China's end, this is a battle to maintain their power and wealth. China knows very well just how important propaganda is. They cannot lose their reputation, it is everything.
On an unrelated note reckon I'd go viral (no pun intended) if I got a pile of Chinese phones and strapped them to fireworks?
