Well, that's the drug companies for you. "Low potential for abuse" is a tick-list item in a sales brochure. They replaced pseudoephedrine in cold remedies with phenylephrine, because you can use large quantities of pseudoephedrine (way more than you would need for a whole family with colds) to make crystal methamphetamine; but phenylephrine is useless for making crystal meth.
Unfortunately, phenylephrine is also utter bollox as a decongestant, being consistently out-performed in trials by placebos; but fortunately, pseudoephedrine is still available behind the counter, if you ask for it by name. Just hope and pray that you don't run into the Pharmacy Fascist (we know a song about that .....)
