The EADD Windows Technical Gibberings Thread

Allein it is obvious that you have an issue with me and are trying to instigate an argument with me. Well I'm not going to bite. I never tore into you at all. I simply replied to your post. It seems there was cross wires in relation to what you thought I purchased and myself in thinking you you were saying I was ripped off in purchasing my laptop.

Nonetheless I am not continuing this conversation with you as I see it leading to further animosity and it's not what I'm here for.

Evey

I'll leave others to make their own minds up, your view of things is so distorted it's just impossible to reason with you. Take some time to review your post:-
I was NOT ripped off at all. I bought my laptop in 2010. Just because you don't like windows doesn't mean everyone else feels the same.
It 's not. "Just a zoom," it's a proper built-in magnifier n for people with sight issues it is a heavenly feature.

I'm quite happy with Windows 7, it does what I want n need it to do n doesn't crash the way XP always did. The amount of times xp failed on me was unreal - along with the cost £90.

In four years I've not needed to have my laptop repaired once n am more than happy with the £450 I paid for it.

Without the magnifying software I'd not be able to use a laptop as the screens n fonts are tiny. This laptop has a 17 inch screen but I used to have 19 inch when using a PC.

I love my laptop because i can take it anywhere.

Edit: yes RNIB help me with Lunar Dolphin software through a company called "access to Work" when I had my last two jobs.

Your indignant use of capitals is the internet version of shouting...why

Your response totally failed to be in any way relevant to my post, politely put your talking nonsense in its literal sense and being aggressive and unpleasant with it.

Here is as good a place as any....carry on in this vein and you'll end up on a permanent holiday. Accept the fact that it's you and not me with the problem, calm down and keep your horrible, unjustified and pointless temper off this site...end of

I might be mistaken but I'm sure there was a magnifier in the accessibility options at least as far back as Windows XP, if not further. I remember coming across these things whilst looking for sticky keys options. (we caused havoc with sticky keys in computing classes :D)

Windows 8 was released at the end of 2012... if you are happy with Windows 7, I'd just stick with it.

Nope there is a 372GB partition with the OS on it & a 537GB one called 'Data'. I think there is probably another hidden recovery partition but I've not bothered to load the BIOS to see. It's not so much about running out of space as it's just a plain nuisance because I want all my files organized in the relevant folders e.g. Music/Videos/Downloads but I have much more than the 317GB that is free in those user folders.

I suppose I could change the iTunes Media Folder to the 'Data' partition since I'll only be accessing those through iTunes itself. That should give me plenty of space for keeping photos, downloads & non-iTunes videos in the right places. Should manage to cope that way.

All the same, I'd much rather just get rid of the partition.

I'd try something like Partition Magic, I'm sure you could obtain a copy :sus: if it's just a normal partition that some one thought would be a 'great feature' it would be easy to remove and integrate back into the main partition (the one with the OS). I suspect that there may be some underlying reason for setting it up that way.t

My main desktop, running Win 7 has a separate drive for the OS, I have 3 USB drives giving me about 2TB of space for films, Music photos etc. (it's only 3 because I've added and acquired various bits over time) it means if I need to reload the OS or it goes to shit, or I want to replace that box as i did recently (£50 off Ebay coz I'm tightaat or like that). It's easy enough to access these drives via the other 2 Windows laptops but also my Linux and Android devices and it mean I don't really store 'stuff' on laptops so if they break (which they tend to do more so than desktops and are often more difficult to fix) I don't lose data or access to it.

I've come close to losing huge amounts of data in the past due to immanent hard drive failures but manged to recover most stuff most of the time. IME the OS drive sees more action, if all I was running was a laptop I'd probably get one of those drives that you can setup to access via your network (connect it to your router, nothing fancy) or at the least back everything up to a USB drive. I do use a bit of cloud storage but I'm not totally sold on the concept ATM, dropbox is handy though.

Computer has been ridiculously slow. I did the obvious, uninstall unnecessary programs, defrag etc... but didn't really help. In the task manager the computer was using upto 98% of it's RAM! So closed a lot of needless programs but still didn't seem to help. I didn't realise a lot of running programs which are system files are hidden from task manager, so managed to display them by selecting an option.

These were the files eating up the memory, notably one called "SCVHOST.exe" which was taking up nearly half of memory!! I closed it and the computer ran fine and smooth as it should. No problems from closing this system file either. So what the hell is it doing taking up half the memory and slowing the computer completely!?!?

I assumed it must be a virus, turns out it's just a couple of Windows files. A "Windows update" file and something called SuperFetch, which doesn't appear to do anything helpful. I deleted the files and the computer is back smoothly running at 40-50% of RAM. I'm astonished Microsoft include stupid files like these into windows, do they want you to have slow computers or something??

Can't I write a post anymore on this board without Ceres berating me, and Evey trying to come to the rescue.

Please. There's other people on the board. Let me rant at Microsoft® and there woeful Windows set-up in peace.

No i will not let you wind me up Raas. There are nicer n more descrete ways of saying that than all over EADD. You had no problem with me defending you during your ban as you thanked me enough times for it now it's annoying. Well i will just leave you to it.

I'm not going to fall out with you no matter how much you try to get me to for your own amusement.

Have a nice day :)

That's better :D

Evey

Ceres, when I said this in response to your post I hope you realise I was joking with you n not trying to be funny with you, was in a jokey mood last night.

Ah sorry FUBAR. I said I was not going to have these public dramas. It's one of the reasons I stayed away for so long. I hate all the arguing n just wish to get on with people. I won't say no more as it's disruptive to thread so sorry people.

So back to whatever thread is about bowing out now!
