The EADD Windows Technical Gibberings Thread

PLEASE PLEASE can someone advise me? My laptop has been 'Configuring windows updates' and has been stuck on 12% for about an hour or more..I am on old battered fizzing lappy. Fucking windows 8 aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I have no idea how to proceed as am total technophobe who only just recently upgraded from a speak and spell..it's going out the window in a minute.....

:sus:

There's quite a good chance it's crashed and you'll need to turn it off and on again.. which is pretty risky to do in the middle of an update. But my Win 8 laptop did that a few days ago and resumed the update quite happily when I turned it back on.. so you'll probably be okay. Not many alternatives if it's definitely stopped doing owt. :/

AND wouldn't you know it....a few seconds after posting it jumps from 12% and just restarts itself and breathe....

peaaaa esss cheers Swampy-bloody thing.

Hi i've just got a question, how many GB of data do people usually get through per month on their home broadband connection? My usage so far is between 45GB & 60GB per month. I was just interested to know if that is considered a normal amount or is it quite heavy usage?

We have 30GB a month... and normally use around 28, only go over if I download shit

But at 2mb/s I don't bother downloading much

I looked at my usage a while back & I'd managed like 120gb odd in a single month... the joys of 75mbps cable / 40mbps wi-fi <3

It's probably more like 80-100gb most months though.

That's some going at it with that sort of usage Chatative, i thought i may be considered a fairly high user but in comparison i don't appear to be too bad

So I've been busy trying to get my replacement laptop all set up... upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1 was a hassle because the auto update wouldn't work, failing to configure the updates & taking almost 2 hours to revert the changes. I eventually found an 8.1 compatibility checker which highlighted I only needed 2 of the updates to be able to upgrade it. Then my touch screen wasn't working anymore but I got that fixed... 8)

Anyway, ASUS have seen fit to divide the HDD into two volumes... which is completely useless. Is there a way to combine them without installation disks? Really pisses me off that laptops aren't supplied with them. Someone suggested going into 'Manage Storage Spaces' but apparently my HDD isn't compatible with that.

I was a bit of a whizz with all these things like 10 years ago but I've really not kept up to date & it's a lot harder to find solutions online now.

It seems the more 'user friendly' Micrsoft & the laptop manufacturers try to make things, it just ends up creating a multitude of problems. :|

Wow I didnt know this thread was here.
How long has windows 8 been out????

I've got windows 7 n love it. It has a magnifier in which is bloody ace. Before that I'd have to purchase dolphin software, which costs hundreds of ounds n would interfere with other software.

I'm guessing the partition is for 'recovery', personally if I'd brought the laptop with an OS (laughs at you for paying for such a thing:D) then I'd run it as the manufacturer intended. The alternative is to use a non OEM Windows installation and reformat the HD, you'd lose your support from the manufacturer and not achieve a great deal. I had an HP Laptop given to us by a relative brand new and it has a recovery partition that I've left in place even though I'd be unlikely to use it.

What with cloud storage, USB drives and the size of the HD likely to be in there are you really going to run out of space ?

Sorry you got ripped off, I'm not sure when Internet Explorer added a zoom function, my guess is its always been there (currently accessed bottom right corner) every other application I use on my Windows machines has such a feature, Office, Media Player Etc.

Much of these things are related to ADA and DDA regulations which ensure such technologies are accessible for as many people as possible, issues with sight are almost always covered and have been for many years on large volume consumer products. I'm sure an organisation like the RNIB or similar would be able to advise on such things and help you avoid getting turned over for some unrequired software in the future.

I might be mistaken but I'm sure there was a magnifier in the accessibility options at least as far back as Windows XP, if not further. I remember coming across these things whilst looking for sticky keys options. (we caused havoc with sticky keys in computing classes :D)

Windows 8 was released at the end of 2012... if you are happy with Windows 7, I'd just stick with it.

Nope there is a 372GB partition with the OS on it & a 537GB one called 'Data'. I think there is probably another hidden recovery partition but I've not bothered to load the BIOS to see. It's not so much about running out of space as it's just a plain nuisance because I want all my files organized in the relevant folders e.g. Music/Videos/Downloads but I have much more than the 317GB that is free in those user folders.

I suppose I could change the iTunes Media Folder to the 'Data' partition since I'll only be accessing those through iTunes itself. That should give me plenty of space for keeping photos, downloads & non-iTunes videos in the right places. Should manage to cope that way.

All the same, I'd much rather just get rid of the partition.

I was NOT ripped off at all. I bought my laptop in 2010. Just because you don't like windows doesn't mean everyone else feels the same.
It 's not. "Just a zoom," it's a proper built-in magnifier n for people with sight issues it is a heavenly feature.

I'm quite happy with Windows 7, it does what I want n need it to do n doesn't crash the way XP always did. The amount of times xp failed on me was unreal - along with the cost £90.

In four years I've not needed to have my laptop repaired once n am more than happy with the £450 I paid for it.

Without the magnifying software I'd not be able to use a laptop as the screens n fonts are tiny. This laptop has a 17 inch screen but I used to have 19 inch when using a PC.

I love my laptop because i can take it anywhere.

Edit: yes RNIB help me with Lunar Dolphin software through a company called "access to Work" when I had my last two jobs.

A friend of mine has a windows 7 HP laptop, she would enter her user name and get a message saying "Your Profile has not loaded", I backed up her files and re installed the OS, seems funny though, anybody else heard of this happening?

Wow, slow down before you go taring into people for no reason....agian

First I have no issue with Windows, I've stated numerous times that every other machine in then house bar my netbook runs windows 7 and I use a combination of XP and Win 7 at work everyday. Neither XP or Win 7 would run well on the netbook Linux runs much faster as a rule so you can utilise older slower machines. Since I've never paid for an OS price has nothing to do with it.

As an ease of use general preference for the everyday user Windows is the obvious choice, it works, its well developed and supported. I've said all this stuff before, you often seem to read what you want to read and not whats actually written.

You gave the distinc impression you had personally paid for special software due to your relative;y minor disabilty :-

I've got windows 7 n love it. It has a magnifier in which is bloody ace. Before that I'd have to purchase dolphin software, which costs hundreds of ounds n would interfere with other software.

I just pointed out that Windows and almost all associated commonly used applications support zoom functions and settings to assist those with disabiltites....which they do.

I'm not making this stuff up, I recently developed a consumer device that has full functionality for people with no sight at all, I worked closely with the RNIB and I'm familiar with both the ADA and DDA regualations.

Calm down and jog on, the 'kid glove' treatment has long since run out

Allein it is obvious that you have an issue with me and are trying to instigate an argument with me. Well I'm not going to bite. I never tore into you at all. I simply replied to your post. It seems there was cross wires in relation to what you thought I purchased and myself in thinking you you were saying I was ripped off in purchasing my laptop.

Nonetheless I am not continuing this conversation with you as I see it leading to further animosity and it's not what I'm here for.

Evey

Dont make Allein out to be the argument instigator, you're the one doing that then trying to spin it back the other way
