The EADD a trifle annoyed thread v. I bet that smarts a bit

I'm using Linux (Xubuntu... 14 (I think)) with an ethernet cable connected to the router. Machine itself is knocking on a bit but my basic usage hasn't changed, it's just the loading speeds (and endless double posting as noted) that seem to be spiralling ever upwards.

If it gets too, too ridiculous I'll no doubt have to try wiping the HD and reinstalling. Again. To be honest, my techy issues are longstanding and somewhat... odd at the best of times so not really expecting any fixes so much as having a general whinge really.

Is bloody annoying all the same :!
i bet. what is the downstream speed on your connection?

That what you mean, Ali?

Actual d/l speed mostly hovers around the 600-800 kb/s range. I've had it go up to 1mb once or twice but was an event so noteworthy I nearly called the local paper.

Maybe, have you tried running some online tests, it may even me that your provider can improve things, I guess your a good way from the exchange. This little netbook is running Mint and for the nothing I paid for it it's fine but there is a knows issue with the wireless driver that makes it quite slow tol load content.

I often use my 4G phone as a hotspot both when out and about and as a useful elimination tool for such weird problems, that said what is the spec of the Netbook ? it doesmt sound like a memory of motherboard issue but it's possible your harddrive is either fragmented or giving up, for reasons not of any interest i have several 160GB 2.5" laptop drives kicking about if you want to give that a try

That aint all that rapid in truth but I'd still pursue a few tweaks, I have a deliberatly poor connection at work for some testing work and aside from music embed threads it hardly noticeable on BL and I have a 100meg + one to compare it to.

I would certainly reload the OS since it's done in less than an hour and the offer to jettison some of my endless pile of techy detritus is open. O guess your a good way from the exchange but still thats slowly current standards,I;d complain, tell them its taking an age to download your Bittorent porn and its just not good enough

I'm not using a netbook I'm using a desktop PC - one of Knock's old ones as it happens (Knock <3)) and am actually a stone's throw from the exchange. Whenever I've had engineers out (the main BT exchange is in town - maybe 5mins walk from here) they are baffled and blame it on the crappy phone cables that my lovely Thatcher-approved cowboy-build 80s flat sports. I can see that but what I don't get is why it just gets worse and worse. I should probably add that this is specifically during "peak" hours (ie from early-mid afternoon through til about midnight) that it's a real problem. Is more functional at other times... which is only of any use if I am too, of course 8)

yep. who is your provider? what is the name of your package or subscription?

600-800k is well below average for the uk.

Ahh if you have another machine doing the same then it's very likely your connection, I havent had ADSL for some years but that looks shite and those tests dont tell the whole story. They should be able to predict your expected bandwidth and if its a good way off they need to fix it.

Thw PO dont have a great rep IME if your out of contract it may be worth switching and like I said if youor a visitor has a 4G phione and sigmal that could be a usefuk way if confirmed the speed issue, Im asking the obvious bit you do have an ADSL filter and have tried factory resetting the touter.

Since moving to cable mine has been more then adequate but I'm aware cable isnt everywhere and satellite never realty got started. Michealand I used to chat about such techy things and he had he same issue of acquiring stuff along the way, Idont collect clutter so any opportunity to have it made use of.

People tend to think I spend a fortune on techy stuff but its been years since a brought a new PC,the familty laptop was a gift from my uncle =, a friend gave m this netwook as she split a glass if wine on it ($.99 for a new one and nothing to put mint on itm The desktop was £40 fromEbay, screens and such are always coming my way.

I have 2 laptops for work, one fancy thing that is on the network and nailed down so hard hard security policies its only goos for email and ofice apps but I have another scruffy HP i5 that desktops gifted me for all he stuff I do that falls a long way oursode of their polices etc, its easier that way, I never do more than read he news and so real work on the networked machine, I even have an excuse t o trawl the DN, much if the rest if it is utter shite though

I have indeed reset the router many times - no difference. Not sure where you've conjured this Netbook-owning visitor of mine but it's just me on me own here as usual. I am very close to a netbook-owning squirrel but not in terms of actual proximity at the moment.

Have thought a bit about changing providers but it's not just me that has such problems with speeds here. Seems to be an issue for a number of people using a variety of ISPs. Rural living ftw :\

Although it doesn't effect everybody so I really have no fukkin clue. Seems to be more or less completely at random whether one's interwebz work worth a wank or not even close.

I;ve no idea either, I genuinely thought you had laptop of sorts running Linux, so assumed you had 2 machines, that said the connection is slow and could well be even slower at times, I still reload the OS though Linux seems less prone to the creeping entropy but its there none the less and a reload is so much easier than windows, I'm a fan of Mint TBH having abandoned Unbuntu when they implemented the Unity desktop, but I dislike all the command line stuff when you want tot do anything out of the norm, I'm more familiar with Windows in general but I'm no software guy.

That connection is taking the piss though, it could be many things,I've had stuff resolved by the provider logging into the router remotely in the past, they had the cheek to mention the post forwarding I;d setup for Bittorent ....fukin cheek.

Hope you get it sorted soon

Thanks, Allein. I may give them a call to see if there's owt they can do. Have considered changing providers but there's nobody who's really any cheaper (budget is definitely a real concern for me) and beyond that it seems mostly pot luck as to whether they'd be any better or not even if I did pick a provider at random :\

If your out of contract they will likely want to keep you, ADSL has improved greatly since it first became available, I pay £18.00 for my 4G phone so they should be able t do better for you than that.

Apologies for the obvious questions I tend to slip into work mode with such things without even realizing I guess the £23 is with the line rental, you could probably shave a bit off that with someone else. The days are gone when you could just logon to next doors open WiFi :D

Hehe. The days may or may not be gone of open wifi. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it was still my wifi that was open and causing sundry shiteyness :!

Routers have come prekeyed for quite a while, it should have a label on it the the PW, faling tha just type 192.168.9.1into the address bar on you=r browser and that would almost always get you into the router to check the settings, you might need a login Admin Admin has alwasy been a fav, but the post office may use something else, worth a look .

Right less of my rambling and a litte atempt at sleep

That's a coincidence, one of my regular annoyances up here is the internet speed. Today I've got many other things to be annoyed about though. The main one being that I've just found out that my housemates/one of their friends broke our kitchen table when they had a mini party the other day and now we're all expected to pay to get it fixed.

Considering I've used that table about once since living here, didn't even know it was broken nevermind having anything to do with breaking it, and won't even be living here in 2 weeks (and won't be here for 1 of those weeks) they can get fucked if they want any money from me. I already think it's ridiculous that I have to pay the same (too high) amount for the bills each month as well despite only being here for about half of the time and therefore obviously not using the water etc as much.

I've been too nice to mention it before but I'm not paying for things that have nothing to do with me when I need to money for actually finding somewhere else to live. I certainly wont be paying anything for the next couple of months, need to remember to cancel my direct debit thing.

In the same vein I'm annoyed with people taking advantage of/not appreciating my good nature/how much effort I put into things/etc etc. I don't mind always being the one to make an effort as long as it gets appreciated, if not then I just end up wondering why I've bothered.

Ugh Friday 13th seems appropriately unlucky and grim.

ADSL is just plain crap. But when the FUCK is Virgin going to get their act together n install cable in our areas? Really annoys me because it's been the the same for 10 years now in that Virgin don't have Cable here so we're stuck with crappy ADSL while most of the UK get to enjoy cable.

My ex had Virgin. It was ace. Fast. He could change his number or simply not use the landline. I'm here sticking paying for a landline I don't use because I have to have to to get internet access / wifi / adsl.

I want fast Virgin but lose out because of the area I live in. Bloody joke if you ask me.

We haven't even 4G put in this area.
