EADD Film Recommendations v5 - TBC

I liked American Sniper... it wasn't perfect but it wasn't your usual recruitment video style film either; actually portrayed the psychological toll war could have quite well. If you like war films, it's worth watching.

Watched 3/4 of boyhood the other day. dunno why its so highly rated, thought it was dull

Is it that bad?....I really wanted to see that as well. I've read the book and that was OK and I thought the film would be good. Its quite difficult to cock up a film about a sniper in Iraq who shoots hundreds of people....that's like a foolproof plot for Hollywood (Sniper, The Shooter, Enemy At The Gate etc..) but according to all the reviews I've read plus what you've just said its meant to be wank...

He was just recently murdered that Chris Kyle guy wasn't he. Shot dead at a gun range by a fellow marine.

I can't remember the last movie I actually switched off (and I watched the last hobbit thing). Its dreadful.

I didn't say it was bad, just not perfect... and yes that was how Chris Kyle died. Shocking really.

Sorry it was bearloves post I meant to quote but pressed quote under yours by mistake. I was pretty shocking how he died. Some guy just shot him and his mate at the gun range. After surviving all those tours of Iraq to be then gunned down at a shooting range in the states....by a fellow marine at that. Shocking.

I still think I like to see the film though.

I was gonna rent it to see with my son tomorrow. Is it that bad. He´s young, the film relates somehow to us, etc..
What do you suggest?

Picnic dir. Shunji Iwai. Overlooked Iwai flick about a girl sent to a stereotypically penitential mental hospital who makes a motley band of crazy friends and escapes with them. Beautiful ending scene. Could have made more of the body horror/depravity hallucination bits, though.

Recently watched Videodrome, dir. David Cronenberg. I realize that almost everyone has seen it, but I felt I'd throw in a shout for it anyway.

The Riot Club - fictional portrayal of an elite oxford club that's suspiciously like the bullingdon club. They avoided making about the osbourne/cameron/johnson era which would have been better (libel i guess) but there are echoes. Pretty shallow, but ok.

Also, Operation Terror - a thriller about 9-11 being set up by the us government - goes through the familiar 9/11 arguments in a fictionalised way. Not too bad as a film (was hard to get hold of though)

(Got round to watching interstellar - wasn't that impressed really - i was expecting more (i'm a sci fi snob i suppose))

Edit: Videodrome's well worth a mention - i love that film

Manny was good, quite an insightful look into the life of a genuine sporting legend.

American Sniper - totally agree with bear, honestly found it boring. Check out the fake baby in it as well such a howler, have a look on tube. 5/10.

Whiplash - I highly recommend this film, so so good (I'm not into drumming, but this has reaffirmed my respect for those who can). 10/10

Foxcatcher - Abit meh really, interesting story but meh. Not really my type of film (Carrel is amazing in it though). 7/10

Birdman - Like whiplash so so good, Keaton plays a blinder & the film in general is so well shot its nailed on for an Oscar. 9/10

Kill the messenger - Interesting story about the cia's involvement in drug smuggling during the 80's & what they did to the journalist who uncovered it. 8/10

Oh forgot 1...

Big hero 6 - Lovely kinda kids film, best Disney film in a long while imho / kinda sad at stages but all in all a good watch. 9/10

Nightcrawler... amazing film. incredible acting by jake gyllenhaal, unsettling

How he isn't up for any major rewards is beyond me, honestly a disturbing / believable performance by him. Plus he deserves one for Donnie Darko :)

That sounds both worth a looksee and also rather similar to I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK which I would highly recommend to all.

Anybody know if that vicious rumour of a Videodrome remake been as thoroughly quashed as it deserves to be or is it still a possibility of nightmarish proportions?

Watched the imitation game. Quite a good movie, and cucumberguy is good in it too.

Still cant stand keira though

Perhaps ms knightly can stand for herself. What is it about her you don't reckon? I always wanted Jack Sparrow and Kiera to get it together in pirates.

Cucumber guy?? :D
