[MUSIC] The 80's thread .... (links only please, no full video screens)

nice, credible 80's music!

argh why !!! ? :? Its only saving grace was Under Pressure.

just wierd like that I guess. I like the rock/electronic cross over & I think there's some great tracks on there. I have this theory that the album is dissed purely because of the electronic leanings, especially of the opening track Body Language... & this from a time in the early 80's where electronic music was not accepted as "genuine" & when electro-pop music did hit the charts it was off the dire Video Killed variety. Electronic elements in rock music were frowned upon at the time & I think Queen just stepped a bit too far a bit too soon. I love the idea of Queen, so well know for their rock epics, to have been electronic pioneers.

I'm not for a moment suggesting just because I like Hot Space that it's anywhere near their best ever album. That would be patently ridiculous. I just think Hot Space is an interesting departure for Queen that does not get a fair crack of the whip by Queen fans.

Yazoo - Only You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdvZa46xb3M

yes !! Ive rememberd a good track from the 80s, i know they are out there, its just remebering them all.

I know what you mean Si, most Queen fans at the time of Hot Space were Rock purists who despised keyboards, it took a while for them to become accepted.

Bronski Beat-Smalltown Boy (original)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB0pEtKAmmk now this track is class. Fuckin brilliant.

The Housemartins - Sheep

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9uHY5Kbj4g Wonderfull track

I loved their London 0 Hull 4 album. This track is one of my favourites, though its hard to limit it to just 1 track from that album. I was very enthusiastic about this album, back in the day.

Hahah mate, I could own this fucking thread, I have a BACKLOG in my mind here! Yazoo made a few great tracks, & their albums are reasoanbly solid too! Clarke of course became a writing force for early Depeche Mode & later with Erasure. Erasure still going ain't they?

Yazoo - Don't Go - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VML1u8KJjEo

Ah, I didn't say they were all good... Smalltown Boy is first class however. Track down the long version it's rather excellent. Oh fuck it, here ya go -

Smalltown Boy - long version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R53Q3q1OIjY

Erasure - A Little Respect

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x34icYC8zA0

I fuckin love this song, it was the only tune i would get up to dance to in my sullen youth.

Really my last few song choices would strongly suggest that im extremely gay, im not, it just so happens that gay people were making some of the finest music of the 1980s. Ive never thought of that before. But it was a real turning point for something, so many of these 80s bands were openly, proudly gay.

its my era !! Its mine :p;) My backlog is buried deep, but parts are resurfacing.

I feel us more cohorts than rivals, cohorts on an unholy quest to unearth the darkest musical effluent filth & purge, purge, purge it from you. It's cathartic.

If however you want a war, step the fuck back bitch! I am armed! I have the cheesiest shit, stuff that'd make Marms Da Da Da look like fucking beethoven!

No offence Marms ;)

allow me - Divine - You Think You're a Man - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TXoGjYO7TY

What 80's thread could exist without mention of this huge talent! He ummm she errr THIS tune deserves a full page but I shall resist temptation...

id prefer no cheese, this thread could go horribly wrong, i think we should be posting our very own "Best Of The 80s" compilation. Im on a quest to unearth the good stuff, i do get competitive though i must admit. :\ Yeah we are cohorts, nice way of putting it.

Ultravox - Vienna [1981] HQ HD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYdJoxi05LU

not listened to this for many a year, its sounding good. I liked it in its day, and i still like it now.

Eurythmics - Thorn In My Side

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9omIsBFZUc This is sounding better than i remembered it being.

Okay but if we have a cheese battle, it's mine! You ARE competetive aren't you? Hahahaha Fine have the damn thread ;)

This thread has become far too poppy and far, far, far too camp. I'm out.

See, already there are casualties! Although I'm not sure how realistic it is to be in an 80's thread & expect it to be free of camp...

Cohorts it is then =D

PiL I do like! But fuck man, the 80's defined pop! Which is WHY there was so much alternative music being made to counter-act it! I guess I'm lucky in that I can see the best of both cheesey pop music & credible artists who just happen to be from the 80's. Like fucking Bauhaus!

Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mriBc6NjUhg

sorry the actual release is 1979 but this recording is from 1982 I think. Definitely 80's, & if this track doesn't define 80's Goth music, I don't know what does.

hahaha ... it's a hard one. Cheese has already been posted by the truckload anyway Sam.

I too would kinda like to keep it to decent stuff (if anything just to disprove SHM), but then look at what I started off the thread with.

I'm not sure what I'm competing at ... decent .. cheesy .. hidden gems most people will have forgotten about ..

I'm lost now

Good, we're practically all cohorts on here. I also like a mixture of pop (its a matter of opinion/debate as to whether its cheesy or not) and credible artists. But i do draw the line at cack like Bross and Brother Beyond and all the rest of those godawful ponces that made "music" for 10 year old girls.

Yeah Marmz im going for the biggest most era defining tracks that were not cack, as well as decent stuff, and possibly some forgotten gems.
