[MUSIC] The 80's thread .... (links only please, no full video screens)

wow id love to see one of Gilmour's acoustic sets. The best simillar thing i saw i was in a welsh pub and a load of folk muiscians just picked up their instuments and decided to have 'a jam'. If i lived anywhere near The Thames I'd be PMing you for more details about that pub ! ;)

No wonder i had such a bad trip then, that was my first time on mushrooms. I felt pretty fuckin anxious, and was just fighting agaisnt the trip, a very bad day indeed that was. Though the music was incredible. I later found that just putting that album back on i would get brief "flashbacks" into full blown trip state. They didnt last more than a few seconds.

As for hating Thatcher, thats a start.

Yeah, is that the one with Dark Side of the Moon live..? It's good but nothing by Floyd will match Live in Pompei. But this is digressing into a Pink Floyd thread & they didn't do their best work, any of them, in the 80's. So lets drop the Floyd boys, & crack on with the crass pap that populated the decade of bad taste!

Baltimora - Tarzan Boy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r0n9Dv6XnY

Animotion - Obsession - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Lec3m1pLY

Alphaville - Big in Japan - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyGqk3Uac_Y

... and seeing the word Japan made me think of something a little more credible...

Japan - Quiet Life - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnruMVKTq7A

whats he done to proove his conscience ?:?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asFm7lA32k0
edit: I realise the irony in him going on about poverty while munching away on king prawns and drinking expensive wine from a glass the size of my head with a top French TV chef :D

And listen to "The Final Cut". Which is 80s, so is also relevant.

His heart is in the right place. I don't think there is much variety in his musical style (solo work). That could be said for many musicians, but Floyd output over their earlier years was exceedingly varied in style. One reason I like their early stuff so much, doesn't get samey.

ANYWAAAAY enough floyd. Here is a good 80s track, Party Fears 2 by The Associates.

The Vaselines - I Hate The 80's

(seen them live, they played this too with their last album release ... )

There was you and MTV,
Pink speed emptied me,
There goes the day glo generation,
Hey! What's my motivation?

Brain like a Rubik's cube,
Didn't notice we got screwed,
Now the party's over,
Nothing left but the hangover.

What do you know? You weren't there,
It wasn't all Duran Duran,
You want the truth? Well, This is it,
I hate the '80s 'cause the '80s were shit.

You put a bullet in a Beatle,
Started beating on the people,
A wall wasn't there,
A war that lead nowhere.

And it's all coming down,
No point in hanging around,
But where did that girl go,
And what did that boy know?

What do you know? You weren't there,
It wasn't all Duran Duran,
You want the truth? Well, This is it,
I hate the '80s 'cause the '80s were shit.
Where did that girl go?
What did that boy know?

Queen - I Want To Break Free (High Quality + Lyrics) <3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjZvCssFwB0

He's one of my favourite singers, their Queen II album is very interesting, its a flawed mix of moments of brilliance with moments of embarrsingly badly judged stuff too. They hadnt quite become great songwriters at that point, but here and there they got it, like with The March of the black queen, Freddy singing "I'll be Your bad boy" is really great, theres also a pretty soppy sentimental track Lilly of the Valley, i cant hep but like it.

i didnt know which track to choose, resisted the obvious radio gaga, thought about its a hard life, but more people will probably know and enjoy break free. They successfully updated their sound with The Works, having failed miserably to do so on the disaterously awfull preceeding album Hot Space.

Good, solid choices there Si.

I have this thing for albums the true fans hate. Hot Space is my favourite Queen lp Lmao =D

From Hot Space - with David Bowie - Under Pressure - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a01QQZyl-_I

Van Halen - Mean Street - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul0dLrlME1g
this is actually a link to the whole Fairwarning album, which is well good, but the first track Mean Street is the one!

Don Henley - Boys of Summer - http://vimeo.com/38296751
looks like Dons got the IT department on the case at youtube too!

B52s - Planet Claire - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EPP3gkh_00

That's from their Led Zeppelin fanboy phase, isn't it? Those first two LPs are like Camp Zep.

yeah nicely put. Queen werent in the same league as led zep back then, though arguably they overtook them later on in the 70s. The track im thinking of is Nevermore, their genius is budding there. The versions of Lilly of the valley i knoiw cant be found on you tube.
