Megathread The Netflix Mega-thread vs Netflix Originals Suck

quite right

I watched the whole thing, and personally, I didn't find it interesting enough to be made into a movie that was that long. Just my opinion. It probably says more about me than it does about the film, I'm quite boring myself, and probably not very interesting to very many people.

I guess people can watch it and decide for themselves. It certainly has a positive ending to it, and apparently it had a fuck ton of awards and nominations. Just wasn't really what I'm into. I watched "Hair" once, and thought it was an epic pile of shit, other than the music, which is pretty much awesome. The "Sodomy" track in particular. I had sat myself down, and gave myself an assignment to not leave the bed until I had finished smoking half a gram of very nice afghan hash, so I watched stuff like fear and loathing in las vegas, across the universe, and hair while I went about my smoke.

What is YOUR reasoning for why it was so powerful.
Or you could just take turns reaffirming your support for one another endlessly.

I have nothing against homeless people, in fact I gave a guy a ride all the way across the state of Oregon once, and decided that he is probably the most interesting person I have ever met in my life.

^ If it didn't stimulate you emotionally or intellectually, then I'm not sure what to tell you - it was a technically marvelous film either way. Some people watch movies to be entertained, some people watch movies to think and feel.

well utahrd, where do i start? you say you have a positive view of homeless people and have in fact assisted one in your time.. then say you didnt like the movie because its long.. weak reasoning.

the music was dope (if you dont like dj shadow.. well i dont like you) and the entire narrative itself was well produced and filmed. life is a struggle for each and every one of the 7 billion people on this earth. dark days merely exposed the fundamental nature of poverty in new york city. did you not feel the slightest bit of sympathy for the guy who lost his wife and entire family in a fire? then proceeded to stopped using drugs because he possessed a very invaluable sense of foresight.. ill bet he's seen a lot more than you have. if you failed to gain anything from the movie, thats pretty sad. enjoy your musical.

methadonia was a pretty insightful look into life as a junky in nyc. continuing with the socioeconomically disadvantaged genre, dark days was gripping to say the least. that one is a much watch if youre into giving a fuck..

I couldn't watch methadonia for more than 20 mins. I couldn't get past that lady giving -super nod Stevie- shit in the group. If he is still alive he must be the front runner for the main role in the next "this is your brain on drugs" commercial.

Ive been watching all the food docs, they're pretty good but in the end its basically the same- eat raw veggies, no sugar, local farms, fuck mcdonalds etc.

I thought these were worth watching:

Before the devil knows your dead. (Ethan Hawke)

first few episodes of Lie to Me(Tim Roth is great) but series gets old quick imo.

The next three Days (Russell Crowe) is alright.

The Way- was decent as well

too bad. theres a lot to gain from it and she's only a small part.
stevie gets clean at the end of the movie and the whole thing really opened my eyes to a lot of things

Yes, but with great power comes great responsibility.

Comedy Bang! Bang!

It's funny that this show has garnered so many negative comments on the IMDB boards. It's comedian's comedy, like Tim and Eric, Mr. Show, or Strangers With Candy.

^ Is that finally on Netflix now? Good. If you didn't know, it got renewed for 20 more episodes (they're splitting them into groups of 10).

I've been listening to the CBB podcast lately to tide me over until the new season comes out.

^Nice. I didn't know that but was meaning to investigate it ever since seeing the first episode. I've been watching/listening to a few podcasts, too. The podcast is a very different beast. Adding scripted humor, visuals, and editing to the improvisation of the podcast pushes the IFC show well into Mr. Show and Tim and Eric territory. The segment I laughed at the hardest this season -- Chris Parnell trying to fix the "animatronic" Crowpoke -- made me think of TV Funhouse, another example of under-appreciated American alternative comedy greatness.

I don't understand the confidence of people online (which is to say posters rather than raters) who say Scott makes funny people unfunny. Do they really think the only reason there's an eclectic mix of awesome comedians and actors who go on the show and play along with its surreality is because these comedians are merely seeking exposure, despite IFC's relatively meager ratings? As alluded to in the title, the jokes are piercing and in close succession, but you wouldn't know it by the insensate online reaction. It's as if by posting together these anonymous critics collectively rationalize their shared generic sense of humor as authoritative. Richard Pryor didn't play well to crowds in the South. Is that because he wasn't funny?

The thing is, the people who hate something are usually louder and more obnoxious than the fans. Shows like Tim and Eric and CBB can be alienating because their humor is so left-field, but obviously they still managed to get good enough ratings to warrant multiple seasons despite all the hate. I love pretty much everything from Abso-lutely productions precisely because it's so original and weird - it's pretty much a given that they won't have the mass appeal of, say, The Big Bang Theory or Two and a Half Men. So just ignore the small-minded plebs who pour so much time and effort into trashing a show they don't understand...their negative opinions haven't affected CBB's success in any way.

i just found out that the penis blur in the netflix instant version of Holy Motors is not part of the film. it is censored on all streaming channels, like amazon and itunes. apparently the scene was left intact, just a blur added to cover the genitals. didn't miss out on anything there. though it is misleading because there is no noise in fiction. especially misleading as it is a film about film.

i hate to freak out about something so trivial, but the possibility of a slippery slope has me worried. and principle. plus i think there was blur in the CGI scene, and i'm not evens sure what was being blurred. i thought that was the point of the blur. and i thought the censorship of (possibly) offensive but legal material was on its way out. bloggers say either the streaming companies or the distributor decided to add the blur in order avoid obscenity laws? posters are bringing up Antichrist as a point of incongruity. psh. i guess because Antichrist is also a (relatively) well known film and also depicts an erect penis. but neither films flirt with obscenity laws. the uncensored version of Pretty Baby used to stream on netflix instant--probably because the rights were cheaper than the new, cropped version. you can rent the DVD of Valerie's Week of Wonders on netflix and you can currently stream it on hulu+. there are plenty of B flicks on netflix that border on softcore porn--that's nothing--the former two mentioned films border on felonious. i was damn proud of netflix for not giving a fuck. though this might be the distributor's doing.

is this just a random instance of silliness? i hope it doesn't become a trend.

edit:
more googling reveals this is common. apparently i have been seeing uncensored films because of my obscure film choices. i am extremely opposed to the stealing of films, but that is because i thought there was a fair, easy, legitimate way to pay for them.

^ I agree - films shouldn't be arbitrarily censored, especially from a "premium" streaming service. I understand the argument to censor cable, but if you're going to pay for movies you should get the whole movie - erect penises and all. It might seem like a superficial complaint, but I think it's completely valid.

^Strange, I received Holy Motors through Netflix's DVD mail delivery service and the rather lengthy erect cock scene was retained in unsullied full resolution. My best guess is that because streaming requires separate legal agreements between multiple companies -- for instance every game console through which Netflix and other services (Hulu, Amazon, etc.) are streamed though -- that they just say screw it and make a censored version that nobody complains about because they don't want to incur the cost of fighting legal battles on multiple fronts.

I say fuck that so here ya go:

yea, it is only the streaming version of that particular film that is censored. absurd given some of what (i think) the film is getting at.

apparently they're are also chopping content. i've never seen Bad Lieutenant, but there are people online complaining there are shots vital to characterization that are cut. that's what i'm really afraid of.

i'm still not gonna start downloading movies or anything like that. if mainstream film is fucking itself, fuck it. there isn't enough money in print for anyone to mess with it. i haven't been reading enough lately. when i do want to see a film, 15 seconds of googling will confirm i am seeing it as intended. i don't directly support netflix because i cancelled my subscription when they split the streaming and DVD. i have hulu+ and share it with another household in exchange for their netflix instant. that's still kinda paying for netflix--can only be so much of an activist. if it's censored through streaming, i have the DVD/blu-ray blockbuster subscription. all that changes is i gotta make sure to google before watching.

films going/gone out of print because a lack of audience is more a concern to me than this nonsense. damn distribution companies.

I'm watching as many classic films as possible through Hulu+ because I'm almost certain I'll never again see most of them. Makes me kinda sad :(
