Those are VERY tricky - is all the yeast in your starter wild/from the air? What are you planning to bake with it exactly? I really want to explore artisan bread baking but my housemate just went on the Paleo diet!

Yeah it's a wild starter with rye flour, i usually use dried instant yeast and a mix of white/brown/rye in various ratios depending on my mood but i really want to get some nice live sourdough going, good bread helps get me out of bed in the morning.
 
I make my own starters Ceres. Do a lovely mixed seed loaf with no white flour at all in it. I could send you the recipe. This thread is now like Saturday morning Delia.
 
Ooh yeah at the wild starter chat. I need to get one going as my last one died due to neglect, and baking is huuuugely satisfying and, like gardening, good for mental health.
 
I'm excellent at cooking, I manage to make some fairly complicated dishes, but baking is a mistery to me, never managed to master it. I fucked up a lot of biscuits, cakes and pies.

In all honesty I absolutely hate sweets, can't stomach cakes, but I love pies, they're by far the foodstuff I miss the most from my time in the UK, would love to be able to make my own pork pies, steak pies and obviously cornish pasties I became very fond of when living in Plymouth, the very warm ones with potatoes inside, so good. I've been watching lots of tutorials but I'm sure I'll make a mess if I attempted to make them.
 
I must admit that these are not the usual things I read about people 'cooking up' on Bluelight.
Is actually making me hungry though.

Jeez,my stomach is rumbling now and I haven't got any food in the house which means I'm gonna have to get changed and go out in public into a packed Tescos.

As with all great culinary creations fried pizza was of course first mastered by the Scots. I suspect the recipe may be somewhat more battery in their version though.

please do tell me how you make your starters, i've never gotten one to work yet! or at least I haven't used it properly. Maybe it's too cold up here. masonry hasnt got a thing on these sourdough secretives.
 
I know it's probably heresy but I found that shitty white flour or a small amount thereof as part of a blend was a more reliable way to 'catch' yeasts than anything else. You know you can buy cultures, yeah? Obviously it's much more satisfying snagging them out of the air, or your skin, or nose, or wherever they come from.
