Got my dental check-up coming up inna few weeks - made the appointment yesterday in fact. Didn't see a dentist for several years at one point (cos I simply couldn't find an NHS one taking on patients where I lived at the time) and combination of drugs (stims really ain't good for the gnashers :|) and other lifestyle factors meant they got pretty bad. Dentists here have been great though. Teeth are fine now - or at least as good as they're ever gonna get given my chemical dietary requirements :D - and the dentist doesn't seem to be too fussed about drug use. Not that I go out of my way to discuss that but must be fairly obvious given the classic signs - similar to Mr Monkey by the sound of it. Most I get is being asked if I floss and then told I should floss. I don't floss. Apparently people should floss. Dentist is quite sure of that. I am quite sure I don't like floss. So I don't floss. My loss.

Yeah, we've got an NHS one, and I get £100 a year through some work scheme to spend on dentistry, just never use it, cos of THE FEAR. There's a cap on NHS dentistry pricing isn't there? But then I guess there are treatments they just won't give you on the NHS so you're forced to go private for.

I don't know what causes the receding gums thing, the grinding and wearing away enamel is obvious enough....

Fuck floss. I hate it. It's like... it's like FLOSS. It's like having cheesewire dragged across your gums. FUCK it I say. A fuckerie upon't.

Forget floss. Use interdental brushes.

Only time I've seen a private dentist was when I got an infection that ate a big chunk of me gum away (never grew back either - dentists are constantly amazed that I still have me two front teeth all these years later) when I was stuck without an NHS one. Me and the then Mrs Shambles went in, lied like fuck, gave false names, addresses and bank details, took the treatment and ran :D

Have never been frightened of dentists but the one I see now thinks I am (probably cos it had been so long since I last saw one and his English ain't brilliant and he's a bit grumpy so have never gone out of my way to explain). He's much nicer and less rough than he was at first now. Which makes ya wonder why he's beinig deliberately grumpy and rough in the first place really 8)

Think some dentists will give you diazepam if you're really nervous about seeing them. Probably not all that common but pretty sure some do cos have heard of people getting it.

Receding gums is summat to do with smoking (and just getting older) afaik. Quite possibly also stim-related as stims in general seem to be dentistry's mortal enemy.

fuck that!

and fuck floss.

It doesn't help that I'm squeamish about teeth either. I can't even let the fucking dentist do a scale and polish on me, they try with hand tools, with whizzy electric motored tools, then just give up cos i'm wincing and wriggling about so much.

What the fuck would floss, or those interdental drills for that matter, do to stop erosion of enamel and receding gums?

Where's fucking Busty when you need him?

Simple neglect: not cleaning teeth properly, not flossing (listening, Shammy?) or using inter-dental brushes to ensure there's no build-up of plaque, especially at the tooth/gum interface, where bacteria thrive on the plaque and cause gingivitis (which leads to the gums receeding) and eventually loss of bone at the tooth socket . . .

How do I know this? Because I neglected mine (through a combination of fear and not thinking I could afford dentistry) for too long and, for the past few years, have been working with my dentist and dental hygenist (also NHS) to try and slow down the process.

The thought of losing all your teeth is a sobering one and I'd recommend getting down to the dentist sharpish Mr.Monkey.

Mmm, bright colours, expensive, plastic. They'll look great stuck in a seabird's digestive tract. How much?

Oh I agree but it beats having all your teeth pulled out because of gum disease.

It won't end up in a seabird because I don't flush them. A worm will eat them. You're right though, I bet loads of people do flush.

I think some dentists will sedate you if you're lucky, I THINK it's one of the other 'pams rather than diaz, but couldn't you sedate yourself, MM?

Yeah, I've known my teeth have been getting seriously bad for a few years now, but managed to ignore them in favour of getting my hips bashed about and eventually replaced.

No excuses now I suppose. :(

They don't give you any pams unless your having a full on operation .

I strategically arranged my appt. on the day that i get my Benzo script from my GP . If you are really nervous it's your doctor that you have to ask to get some ting for .
Dentists don't dish out benzo's fact.

Oh but one good thing my Dentist does prescribe me is this Presciption only Toothpaste with a fuk load of Fluoride in it . Gives me two tubes every 6 months .
Proper it is .
My teeth are to close together to floss or use those plastic things .

Yeah i'd be surprised, even just in terms of the time it would take them to work. I had a full general anaesthetic in hospital when i had my wisdoms out. Thats about the only way I can let any cunt near my teeth. They're not gonna give me a GA for a scale and polish, or a flossing.

I'm pretty sure even a few benzos wouldn't help me. I can't describe the fear, i know the fear is of a level far higher than the pain I'll actually feel, but there are so many "twangy" spots on my teeth, it just takes one and AAARRGGGHHHHH...the emount of benzos i'd have to take to get through a scale and polish would render me unable to drive, or even catch a bus to the dentists, its 12 miles so walking ain't gonna happen..

Sounds so much like me when I set out to get my teeth sorted ~ the hygenist had the dentist give me injections to avoid discomfort for my first couple of sessions, after which I found I could tolerate the 'deep cleaning'.

So wish I'd taken better care of them in the first place . . .

You guys are making me worse !!

I'm only going for a check up n Polish . I'll have done about a strip of vallys soon . Nah i have 8 to get me through this n i've done 5 already . It's a late appt. 15;45 takes an hour to get their though .

Last time I went to the dentist they said I have a wisdom tooth that needs to be taken care of, the doctor also mentioned that I could do it in a few decades as there was no hurry. If I do it here I won't get any decent meds for post-operation pain, just a bunch of NSAIDs.

I plan on getting it done somewhere like Florida where there's script-happy doctors, I know over there I'll probably get a month worth of oxycontin if I get a wisom tooth pulled out.
