Supermarkets and online stores will be the only thing left at this rate

yep online is the way foward it seems.
a shame buts thats the way it go's.
i couldnt give a toss about corperate high streets chains closing. the virgin megastore in dublin closed over ten years ago only thing i missed was the large games selection but could be got in other shops.
i started buying progressive house and trance vinyls in a famous record shop called abbey discs in dublin in late 1993. i used to love calling in on a friday or saturday listening to and buying my tunes.i bought my tunes there for over ten years.the owner supplied the top irish djs with all the tracks they played in clubs and he knew the taste of hundreds of his customers.you just had to walk in and he would know exactly what to dig out for you.
dj's download samples directly off record labels sites now and make their order online and get tunes mailed directly to them.convienient for them maybe but downloading killed off my favourite record shop that had been supplying dance music since the early 90's.
progress i suppose but the online non face to face way of buying music seems souless to me.

HMV Closing down sale is going to be a Free for all , literally. Like it already it, ashamed to say ive never spent a penny in there but its served me well. Just as guilty as always gobbing the pick n mix at woolworths.

It looks like humans are slowly being made redundant. I wonder what the high street will look like 10 years from now? Chocablock with £3 coffee shops. Who the fuck is going to have the money to buy the coffee? No jobs for humans no money for humans and its not as if many of us know how to work off the land if we need to grow our own food we've lost our strength and skill...

No body will buy my tat 'arghhhh'

Online shops employ humans as well Jess. They're not ran by lizards.

Re high street music stores - Fopp round here is still open, I have no idea if it's a national chain or not. God knows who still buys CDs though. I don't even own a CD player other than the DVD drive that's built into this laptop & I'm probably going to get rid of that fairly soon in favour of another hard drive.

Mr. Crack Head...Fopp is a chain, I think they have survived because they sell decent books as well and quality music, not just "chart singles and console games".
But it's probably just the fact that it's actually owned by HMV and it's their get out clause for when they go under.

How big are fucking HMV stores BTW?? They must waste thousands per square metre in rent! And yeah, who the fuck buys CDs??? Apart from very dodgy sell out djs that only use CD decks...tut tut:sus:

I fucking hate coffee shops! Obviously not the ones in the Netherlands!

Over the summer I was working nights, leaving at 4pm and getting 12 hours later. For the WHOLE two months I was doing that shift two doors down Costa decided that was when they were going to gut an old shop and refit it.
ARGH!!! Was 2 months ever, as soon as I got to sleep around 7 that's when the work started! And what did we get in return (and this was without complaining) 2 free coffee vouchers! CUNTS!

So I go into use one and ask for mint syrup in my cappuccino (bit weird but im mad for mint in anything), aprat from toothpaste...dreadful stuff!)
And yes of course they tried to charge me! 35p! I thought it was a free coffee??? Anyway so I told them to stick it and will be writing a formal letter to head office...

FUCK BIG BRAND STORES AND CHAINS (apart from ones that sell pukka clothes :) )

Where I live didn't need no corporate slave trade nasty coffee anyway! We got a lovely community vibe going on here just north of Camden (it ain't posh or trendy thank fuck but just nice ya know)

Anyway rant over. Apart from the fact that the baristas were certainly not british! Took me a year to get a job! Sorry...that's the aussie coming out of me 8(

Dunno what you mean by "dodgy sell out DJs" using CD decks, but DJs don't buy CDs. Some may buy blank CDs to burn tracks to & use in CDJs but even then most have realised that USB drives or SD cards are a better option. None buy CDs with music already on them anyway.

re the future.

im in the process of burning my vinyl dance music collection to mp3 using a usb turntable. its going to take a while but im looking foward to being able to store my record collection on my terrabyte drive or chuck my tunes onto a usb key and take them anywhere.
i have a huge tape collection of dance music mixtapes mostly from 1994/1995 i still listen to them when i take e cos they are from the peak of the real dance scene. one of my pals who is also an old skool fanatic has a usb tape deck and has already converted a fair few tapes to mp3 and put them on usb key for me. these mixes are irreplacable they are live mixes from clubs back in the day not stuff bought in chains or stuff u could buy on ebay.
progress is good but i still break out my metalic £100 sony walkman from 2000 and £50 in ear sony earfones and listen to the tapes.
its cost me mucho dosh to have that walkman repaired over the years lol i have an ipod too i wouldnt be caught dead with the walkman in public :-P

I'll wager those companies will hire significantly less people though Cracks.

Arghh I bought a perfect nike t shirt. I've been running. I ran up the long walk last week which is a straight 5 miles partly uphill. When I stood at the top.. ( when i was able to stand haha) I did the Rocky thing lol no one was there so i really went to town Rockying.
Anyway the nike t shirt was so cheap because it still had the ink security tag on it. He told me to put it in the fridge to freeze the ink. Doesn't work. I got it off but theres a big splodge of red around the armpit. My only option is to tie die it.

HaHa Acieed- ed they might be v fashionable in a couple of decades. You could probably sell tem to some Japanese punters for LOADSA MONEY.

It was "so cheap" because it was clearly nicked lol. Also, it might have been better in the freezer to freeze the ink. The fridge doesn't freeze stuff. Clue's in the name.

acieed_ed - Is the Sony walkman not much bigger than a tape & flips to the other side automatically? I had one back in the day. It was well good. Still used it right up to getting an iPod (I got one pretty early though). Portable CD players were shite, too big & I didn't really see the point of mini disks.

sounds like the same walkman alright.
its the way you describe and metallic was the most expensive walkman you could get.came in blue metalic and gold metalic i have both lol.
mini discs were alright bloody expensive when they first came out never was mad about them glad when mp3's came out

I think you know what I mean. I'm a grumpy old vinyl DJ who ain't moving with the times and is clearly jealous of all the new technology!

Plus the bulk of my collection is hip hop (UK mainly) so I consider myself a turntabilist as well as a DJ.
No modern equipment will allow you to do what a vestax mixer, a pair of pdx decks (or maybe 1200s) and a couple of white labels which were only pressed 50 times.
Of course the same results are possible but the love, passion and history ain't there.

However I am getting stupid bored of carrying all my shite around to every gig! There is no glamour in lugging vinyl and mixers around! Not that I have played out for a while though mind!!!

yes I do believe the fella that sold it to swim was an oyster.

My dear Crackhead, I wrote fridge but meant freezer I'm terribly sorry if that confused anyone. I didn't, of course, try to freeze the T shirt in the fridge.
I'm actually having a vally, trammy, charis day today and am quite out of the game. I imagine some other eadders post whilst shit faced too. I'm sure they are just as grateful as I for your pointing out our sillyness.

I'm going to try harder.

I think you know what I mean. I'm a grumpy old vinyl DJ...

Ahh right, I genuinely didn't realise that's what you meant at first.

glad when mp3's came out

I couldn't imagine going back to having 90 mins of music per tape. Having 160gb worth of tunes in your pocket is fucking amazing.

@backroll

couldnt agree more with ya. i started out with cheap as chips jb systems belt drive decks and a gemini mixer.
was thought how to beat match on them graduated to 1210's and vestex when i could afford to. what i looked for in a mix was the way a dj mixed tracks and programming the order he put them in and how skillful he was putting them together.thats what i loved.
between cdj decks and laptop sets i struggle to see where the skill is.anyone can compile a playlist of tunes on a laptop and click play lol thats not dj'ing.

@crackhead
yes its great having 160gb of music in ur pocket i wouldnt want a return to tapes either lol

Acieed, you've got a (slight) point regarding the laptop thing, although tell me how a laptop DJ doesn't program the order or mix the tracks (this is assuming they're using all the help the software can give them, which they may well not be), but someone mixing with CDs is literally doing exactly what you're doing with vinyl only they're using the platters on a CDJ as oppose to touching the record.

Tbh, I still prefer to see a DJ play on vinyl but that's more just from an aesthetic & a "keeping it real" POV. This statement makes no sense...

between cdj decks ... i struggle to see where the skill is.

Edit - What skill do CDJs remove from the equation?

*only removed the laptop bit as it is possible to let the software do the beatmatching (I don't see that as the major skill, but that's a different debate...)

Acieed-ed...exactly bruv.

It's like a shortcut to filling a dancefloor. Let me show you some of my first ever mixes...will link them to you at some point.
Anything from the last 5 years or so got lost on a laptop :( there are promo CDs and live club recordings knocking around out there I'm sure.

But what I still have is my vinyl and my 1s and 2s<3

I lost hours and hours of live recorded radio shows as well :! IT's hard to lose vinyl etc unless they get destroyed or nicked (at house parties and illegal raves). You know who you are you thieving little cunts!

Lose a rare vinyl...when are you gonna get it back?? Maybe never, or maybe you end up spending 40 quid on a second hand scratched one...

Crackhead man is it me or have you been grumpy as fuck the last couple of days?

It's you ;)

Acieed-ed...exactly bruv.

It's like a shortcut to filling a dancefloor.

You're completely wrong lol. Expand on the "shortcut" bit. What do you mean? (other than sync functions that remove beatmatching*, I'll accept that point with regard to some laptop DJs) Let's see if you've got something resembling a point in there please.

*edit - even at that, do you genuinely see beatmatching as the major skill in DJing? Anyone can be taught to beatmatch quite easily as long as they can count to 4.

@crackhead

im not anti cdj decks there is beatmatching done live by the dj's etc but come on lol mixing and scratching on cd dex just seems like dj'ing on fisher price childrens decks lol it looks daft.
i used to love watching the world dmc mixing championchips in the nineties look it up on youtube...anyone might be able to beat match but could they mix with that level of skill could they fuck..
its vinyl all the way for me from early us hiphop to dance. laptop sets just dont cut it for me sorry
