I started taking MDMA at age 14... so believe me, I've been there.
LSD is much safer than MDMA. Not only on the brain as it is completely non-toxic while MDMA is directly toxic to many different parts of the brain and body.
LSD is also safer in that it is impossible to die from an overdose, and abuse of LSD has never given *me* any negative effects while abusing MDMA almost destroyed my life.
Obviously abusing any drug is not a good idea, but LSD is a much safer and non-toxic alternative to MDMA.
Not to mention he's going to be doing it alone anyways, and the only good drugs to even do alone are psychedelics.
Which is why I urge him, from my own personal experience, to stay away from the drugs that will be extremely detrimental to the way his brain is developing, and instead use psychedelics which can give something back to the user in the form of insight.
Not to mention, they are MUCH less suited to abuse than stimulant type drugs are.
Taking acid, as you know, can go very sour very quickly. I would suggest a fifteen year old isn't mature enough to handle it... I don't feel there is enough concrete evidence to say using LSD at such a young age is detrimental physically, but I err'd on the side of caution throughout my teenage years until I was 20 to take it myself just in case. But I guess that's just my opinion.
