Look in one pic you hold the bottom of the stick and you can't even get your hand completely round it next you'll be telling me you thinned the invisible top bit.

yes, I would be out there until it was dark somedays, I think angel took a pic of the branch when it was a full on branch, i'll have to ask her to track it down if she would do me such a kind favour

I'll take better pics tomorrow

I never said I'd varnished it or put leather on it, said they were the plans, I had to cut the original branch in half, then whittle the wood down to a much thinner size which took ages, I can work on the shape of the bit below the handle. It's unlikely he will ever use it anyway, will be the thought that counts, making a present is much better than buying one.

I could have swore your original post about the stick said that you'd spent ages on it, varnishing it & wrapping leather around the handle. I'm willing to accept that I might be wrong though.

Time to UTFSE, but I'm shit at it.

No, he did say he still had to finish off the final bits of the stick, THEN leather it and varnish it, and whittle the bottom to fit a rubber stopper on.

I've saved her the bother!

Still, that's just a branch with the bark stripped from it.

qft :D

It's defintiely more than that. I spent hours with my knife trying to make it smooth so that I could sand it down a lot and thin it some more. Sure there is a lot more work to be done on it, but it can me made into a walking stick and it will be.

no, the plan was to do it as a challenge with just a penknife and sandpaper, probably too much of a challenge, but it was fun when I was working on it, I'm gonna take up work on it again now I have nothing to do with my life. It might provide some relaxation at least.

it would be very satisfying if you put the hours in.

Have you got a local tip/recycling centre? those places are always full of pretty ropey old woodworking tools.

^that was the point 3 years ago, a satisfying thing that I had made and a gift for my dad that he would appreciate, it seems to have faded into the shadows as have many of my projects.

there is a local tip round the corner actually, I'd prefer just keeping to the penknife technique though,as originally planned

That'll take em about a month working 7 days a week at 8 hour days with a penknife before that will look anything close to a walking stick.

Can marmz enable pm's for a minute when she reads this (and keep em enabled for while till I have sent a durty pm)
Ta.
