Trial brings cannabis spray closer to pharmacies

CANNABIS prescriptions could soon be available to Australians for the first time as evidence mounts for its medicinal use in people with cancer and multiple sclerosis.

Australian doctors are testing a cannabis mouth spray called Sativex in cancer patients with pain that does not respond well to painkillers such as morphine.

The phase-three trial is the last of several studies required for manufacturer GW Pharmaceuticals to try to licence the drug in Australia.

Brian Le, a palliative care specialist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, said four Australian hospitals were taking part in the study, which involves about 300 patients in 20 locations around the world. If the drug is found to be safe and effective, he said it could be available to patients in the next few years.

A spokeswoman for Novartis, the company employed by GW Pharmaceuticals to commercialise the drug in Australia, said it was working with the Therapeutic Goods Administration to make Sativex available to patients with multiple sclerosis who suffer from uncontrolled muscle spasticity.

No pharmaceutical drugs based on cannabis are currently licensed for use in Australia. Since 2004, health authorities in Britain, Canada and Spain have licensed Sativex for patients with multiple sclerosis, a neurological condition that causes painful muscle stiffness in about 90 per cent of sufferers.

While cannabis is known to cause hallucinations and delusions, Dr Le said phase-one and phase-two trials of Sativex in more than 400 cancer patients found it relieved pain with few side effects, the most common being nausea. He said psychiatric side effects were very rare in the doses used and that patients did not report feeling ''stoned''.

''Our experience is that pain improves and the patients actually feel better. They're more able to do daily activities, sleep better through the night without pain and think clearly, so instances of feeling confused or out of it are low,'' he said.

Dr Le said the drug worked by targeting cannabinoid receptors in the brain. ''Cannabinoid receptors are like morphine receptors in the body, they mediate how the pain is sensed and how that pain message is transmitted to the brain and therefore perceived, so it reduces the conduction of that message to say there is pain occurring,'' he said.

Dr Le said patients in the trial cannot drive because Australian laws prohibit driving with cannabis in the system.

^ good step forward, just legalize it here and tax it you stupid government/popo!!!!!!!!!!

i was wondering if anyone else finds that when they are high on their own it feels less high than doing it with someone? i.e. the presence of someone else who is also high makes you feel 'higher'?

also i know mdma is a good combo with weed but are there any 'legal highs' that go hand in hand with weed?

I usually find I get higher/can enjoy the high more when I don't have to be social. Having to concentrate takes away from my experience.

Not IME. You should stay away from the legal highs in terms of harm reduction. Some are unknown mixtures with unknown effects and reactions.

I dunno, I find that I feel less stoned when I am at home smoking by myself but I typically attribute this to being caused by me being more used to being stoned at home by myself than out and about as I smoke more often at home than I do socially.

Not really relevant to AusDD but since I am posting in the cannabis thread anyway I just wanted to say good on the great States of Washington and Colorado for voting to legalise recreational use of cannabis today! :)

hmm, see i find that when i get high with my partner we increase each other's 'highs' through interaction whilst being high.

on the other hand if i am high and my partner isn't then i feel i am less high and can control my mind more. whether this is because i feel like i need to be more in control simply because i can't lose my inhibitions as much knowing that someone who isn't high is present - not too sure, but i have definitely been my highest with my partner as opposed to doing it alone/being high around others who are not high

Thanks for your input anyway! its great to see movement globally around recreational legalisation of a plant that should never have been illegal in the first place! congrats to the USA for not only retaining a great President today but also making very good progress on acceptance of cannabis

I see this as a fantastic move forward for acceptance of cannabis use. As much as Australia doesn't want to accept it, the US is a large barometer of social trends and I see the tide changing in the next decade if Colorado and Washington develop a healthy weed friendly legislation without any adverse social problems. If their cities don't turn to shit and/or the Federal government doesn't try to stomp on State rights then I see this being a very strong catalyst for change here.

Tourism will be the big winner in both those states. I for one am looking forward to blowing a fat spliff whilst sitting in a hot tub in Aspen after a long day on the slopes. Domestic tourism here would be looking forward to such a law change but it is a fine line between promoting weed tourism and creating a ghetto of fucked up backpackers like some of the hell holes in Thailand. The Gold Coast is too over run by criminals to be the best place to create Australia's Amsterdam, but a place like Cairns or Byron Bay would be perfect.

Medicinal Cannabis for the chronically or terminally ill would be a good start here. Can't see that even happening here for along time tho unfortunately.

Nah fuck that. What would giving terminally ill patients cannabis prove? It is almost like saying "Well they are fucked anyway, why not make them the guinea pigs, they are going to die regardless." Medical cannabis would come with so many levels of red tape and hand wringing and if anything it will place a tougher criminal burden on recreational users as law enforcement struggle to keep the peace. The black market would be even larger and more difficult to control, while employees would be forced to test even more because of perceived "dangers" that normal people will have greater access.

I would rather recreational use or nothing.

People who are dying or very ill should be allowed to legally buy weed and use it instead of, or in combination with whatever drugs they already take, if they wont to I think. The red tape would be just as bad for allowing legal recreational use and people driving and testing of it and such. People who are dying are hardly going to be driving I'd imagine as they'd be on alot of very strong drugs as it is. Altho pharmaceutical companies are hardly going to let this happen, as they'd lose some % of sales. But maybe they might get some in on it all somehow, idk.

I think it would be a good first step to having licensed places growing pot, then hopefully over time the Dr's start giving out certificates for people who aren't even that sick really as well, so more and more people can buy it and use it legally and the legal pot industry grows and develops. And then waayyy down the track the states and government work out how much money and time they have wasted not having it legal and start selling it to any person (over 18) who wonts to buy it. Win win.

Then we can start to think of which places would be good stoner destinations here.

At present in say Byron Bay (NSW) you aren't allowed to grow any plants (ACT and NT you can grow 2 outdoors and SA you can grow 1) and (in NSW) – possession of up to 15 grams of cannabis may receive a ‘cannabis caution’ from the police. 2 caution limit. You can still get charged and sent to court over amounts under 15 grams if the cop(s) feels like it.

In WA - WA Police Minister Rob Johnson says anyone caught with more than 10 grams of cannabis will face two years jail or a $2,000 fine. He said those caught with fewer than 10 grams must attend a one-on-one counselling session. Apparently this is to be based on a similar system used in QLD (July 2011). 11 grams of pot and you could goto jail for 2 yrs (if you had priors and stuff) greeat.

In SA - SA has had the most relaxed of all decriminalised states for the longest of all as they were the first to institute them in 1987. The lowdown is possession of up to 100 grams of marijuana, 20 grams of hash (the resin from the cannabis plant), one non-hydroponic plant or cannabis smoking equipment leads to a fine from $50 to $150 with 60 days to pay it. Not bad.

Yeah it'd be great to be able to smoke weed in public (legally), I really can't see that happening tho.

In QLD, if you have no violence or drug related priors, you must be offered a drug diversion if you have under 28 grams.

I think Cairns would be a great stoner holiday! Nothing like walking around the rainforest high :-)

I don't see any benefit for myself going to a Doctor and faking an illness. If there is some sort of Cannabis register you can bet your bottom dollar the Health Insurance companies will use it to hike a hefty premium on your policy or even refuse to pay out completely if they discover you are on it. Ditto every professional board such as the Law society or Health board. Better to keep to the black market or have it legal for all without any stigma all together.

I am still a fan of current smoking laws that are restricting where you can smoke though. Legal or not I don't want people smoking fat spliffs on the beach or play grounds where children are playing. Keep it at home or on the down low like we have to now.

The definition of conservatism:
"It works for me, so I don't advocate any change"
So...because of corporate bureaucracy we do nothing?
Thats the reason mankind is in such a mess IMO

Nope, I would advocate a revolutionary approach that redefines how humans treat medicinal plants.
There are safe ways to consume cannabis.
Much like other scheduled drugs that are used in clinical settings and "recreationally".
Nothin personal, just saying that your perspective in this case embodies the 'conservative' ethos perfectly. Take that as you wish.

it doesnt really matter about the laws so much atm. Its just general peoples views on weed are pretty negative from propaganda, experiences and the lifestyle that goes with it in australia. On news.com.au theres moms that post shit about their 15 year old daughters becoming depressed and schizophrenic from smoking weed and that its evil, and those are the comments thatll get the most likes. Plus having indonesia so strict on it close by even makes an impact just from stories people know here. Its the views of doctors, law officers, people in key senior positions that makes the difference. The more anything is criminalised, the problem use in people who get caught declines sharply relative to use, which increases, yet in the media here they treat this decrease in use as a bad thing and ignore the other side of the issue. If pills die off in WA again, everyone will happily keep buying speed bombs.

Biggest start is having properly represented scientific stuff and balanced or even just rational vewpoints in the media/doctors office/school. I have friend groups that i couldnt make any slight drug reference whatsoever to because theyd think im a crackhead and stop talking to me. Theyll all still be talking about how drunk they were last weekend half their conversations. Could go off on a million tangents when it comes to weed stuff... Its funny how you treat animals with regards to drug use, I can say from knowledge of veterinary treatment protocol, theres some really easy ways to get certain desired medications...

Just thought I would share a little bit of knowledge to everyone coming in here. Especially the noobs. There is one rule that the majority of beginners fail to follow... 98% of growers new to MMJ miss this.

RULE NUMBER ONE: For your FIRST grow (and a few after), KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!

I have noticed that so many of you, even advanced growers, tend to get caught up in the hype of nutrients and substrates (growing mediums)... Of course the nute companies are to blame here, as their advertising is targeted towards new growers (that can easily be sucked in, I was)! I made this mistake too. You think because something is worth more than something else, it MUST be better. VERY wrong. Just because Advanced Nutrients, Canna, House and Garden, Botanicare etc... etc... have multi million dollar companies and can afford to brainwash the growing community and flood the market with glossy ads etc... does not make these companies any better than the smaller mum and pop kind nutrient manufacturers. Let's be honest, we all love brands, but in this game, "too many cooks spoil the broth". Literally.

Here is a piece of my wisdom (lol). For your first grow, KEEP IT SIMPLE! Don't stress about every little issue with your plant. Don't worry if it is deficient in one nutrient or another. The most important thing, DON'T use 28 different products for 1 or so plants! For one, it is not worth it, regardless how much money you have, you will never make your money back on one - five plants for your outlay. Secondly, it's simply overkill.

Many AWESOME growers here in Australia (with crops you would drool over) use a simple A&B nutrient (General Hydroponics I find is the most common on a commercial scale), a grow enhancer (like a "zyme" uptake type product), and a bloom enhancer... All in all, they have 4 products and produce insane results time after time. Unless you are growing for major profit (in the millions a year), don't worry about all the "bling" products on the shelves, the truth is, they are full of complex chemicals that you really need to learn about before using them. Most of these products are very strong and can really mess your plants health up.

Of course, experiment. Who doesn't love playing with new products! Males love to play with new toys, lights, chemicals, plants, strains etc... constantly, and I am NOT saying to NOT buy these products. I am simply forewarning all new growers to the MMJ community to be sensible about their first few grows. It should be an exciting journey from seed (or clone), to a bountiful harvest. Not an experience that has you stressing yourself into depression.

If your plant is sick, before stressing, pop online, use google and check for symptoms. There are many great sites for plant defiecincies like this one HERE. If this doesn't answer your question, come into GC and one of the genius growers in here will fix all your problems... All in all, you will find a solution as quick as you want, so nothing to stress about.

Don't focus on HUGE yeilds or amazing looking buds the first time you grow. Chances are, you will get great results that YOU will be happy with. In reality, who gives a flying fuck if others like the look of your plants/buds or not. If it smokes up a treat, you should be happy. Plus, once you get the hang of it, then you can start focusing on bud size/sites etc... Trust me, it's a complex task, but a fun one!

Anyway, I hope this helps some people out there. I am glad to be a member here and love jumping on helping/joking/pissing people off!

Peace
