I love where they are going with this season. Opening up the greater universe of characters and storylines is a refreshing change from the claustrophobic feel of the past couple seasons. Season four in particular seemed to be trapped in a very tiny creative space, one that came to an epic ending with the season four finale. I really appreciate how that is allowing the writers to explore new narratives and really expand the plot and character dynamics of the show. This is something that they could have done very poorly. Instead it's looking like it might actually end up being the best season of them all, and at the very least a worthy conclusion to the series.
Yeah, I'm absolutely loving it so far.
4 will probably go down as my least favorite season. It had its amazing moments, like Hermanos, Salud, and Crawl Space, but it felt fundamentally flawed in some way I simply cannot put my finger on well enough to explain. I suppose some of it comes down to the "forced suspense" of some of the early episodes like Bullet Points, Shotgun, and Cornered. A lot of this is subjective, I know, but Breaking Bad has always been a show that makes me lose my objectivity and forget that they don't kill off main characters, and season 4 never did that for me.
Also, the showdown with Gus was something that we had to know was inevitable. We knew one of the two would die, and that it wouldn't be Walt, and Gus needed to go in order to truly advance the plot forward in the extraordinary ways the plot is moving forward in this season. Esposito deserved the season long devotion to him by playing such a character to perfection, but as opposed to previous seasons season 4 was almost entirely character driven instead of plot driven up until the finale, where the inevitable finally occurs in the most epic fashion possible. The ending to Crawl Space is one of the top 2 or 3 moments in the entire series, at least, and it sets the template for the Walt we have now (Walt wasn't dropping bombs on hospitals and nursing homes before his little break down, for those who missed it and feel that Walt has undergone some kind of unprecedented change in character the Walt we are seeing now is the direct product of that very moment). The drama was still on point, and that is what truly makes this show what it is, but the suspense that puts it over the top was largely absent for me.
Season 5 takes us back to the feeling the show thrived on, where we never really knew what would or wouldn't become a problem in the next episode.
