I'm going to invent a new written language!!!

Base 16 eh?

I feel like you're just going to make things that much more complicated for you....considering everything most people do in regards to math is only the base-10 system. Certainly when it comes to doing math in your head.

yeah, I chose base 16 because the rules about the symbols are 4 symbols max in any one big symbol, and 4 symbols in one line, so base 16 seemed the most logical choice as 4 squared is 16 so I can create the symbols for the numbers and it will fit in with the theme of the number 4 being key to the whole language still. I have images in my head of how it is going to work, but I need to spend more time working on the actual logistics of how I am going to be able to express any number with a small amount of symbols, I don't want to have to be writing a whole 10 pages of symbols just to express one number.

I might put the numerical system on hold until I have completed the actual main language to be honest and for now we can just use normal numbers.

All I want to say is carry on doing this as long as you have nothing better to do!

Thanks :)

I still feel like I'm being trolled big time.

no trolling here from me, I promise, this is a hobby I am enjoying doing, it gets my brain cells working, even if it may seem totally fruitless to others at the moment, it is fun for me so that is what matters :)

You're not. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

:) indeed!!!

ok, well I have some symbols to show you.. I have am uploading only the symbols that I have given meaning for so far and then 4 short sentences that have been made using the symbols.

This was the first symbol that I created. The writing isn't too clear for the descriptions, the symbol is the bit in the sharpie pen, the english is the descriptions. The dot in the middle means either balance or peace depending on context. I think the rest is readable.
(haha, the captcha message to be able to upload this last picture was "gone dolally" hehe )

These are the symbols that I created after the original 12, questions words and other necessary words. There will be more necessary symbols that I need to create but this is the start. They allow me to form some basic questions and sentences.

Here are four short sentences that I made using the symbols and the rules. I should add that the symbol that is just a straight line is meant to represent the word that is associated with that part of the main symbol. Forgot to put that in the rules, will update soon.

Using even just those symbols a lot of sentences can be written. I'll update with the other 11 main symbols when I have given the parts of them meanings.

That is what I have so far, will work on the other symbols a bit more tonight. Try and broaden the language somewhat more, so many more things can be written using the symbols and the rules of the language.

See in the picture of your symbols a page back. That sentance/drawing of 'death doesn't scare me', why is the symbol for 'me' at the very start? It just doesn't read easy, it's all over the place. Looks more like it says 'me death doesn't scare'.

EDIT the pictures never copied. Look back a page and you will see what I mean.

Thanks for the input, I didn't really notice that, I think that the rules will need to either have an addition that says that if two words on the symbol are being used in one sentence then the one with just the line through it and no joining symbols always goes first, or to split that sentence into two symbols, the first one just containing the symbol and the line and the second containing the symbol with the joining symbols connected to the word scare.

Hmmm yeah, you could make that rule, but it is always going to make for very tricky reading when it's like that. Your second idea of splitting it in two seems like it would be the easier option I'd say. Still tricky to read though.

Any new language is tricky to read though, this is trickier than most though because it isn't even complete and I'm teaching it at the same time as creating it and developing it, so it is going to be hard to follow until I can post some more of the rules and some more examples and some more symbols.

Fair play to you Mugz at this! Props for originality hadn't read this in a few days interesting to see you get it underway.

a way that will fit in with the basic rules of the language that I posted much earlier in the thread.

You have no basic rules of the language yet. You don't know yourself what it is based on, or where it is going.

Again, this is nonsense, word order shouldn't be in any way relevant if you're creating a new language. This particular "rule" you've just made up with about 3 seconds thought. Death doesn't scare me/Me death doesn't scare, it's the same thing, the word order is irrelevant, you've got a transitive verb, and a clearly defined object.

You are being too constrained by the rules of English. You need to come at this from the rules of language, the rules and necessities of communication.

Read some fucking linguistics Mugz.

Until then , like others have said, i'm just gonna enjoy this thread for what it is.

And I IMPLORE all right thinking mods to NOT close this thread.

oh, I took back my request for it to be closed. I do have the power to delete it though if I please, so please refrain from resorting to saying FUCKING about reading linguistics. I am going to read some linguistics, and I did post some basic rules earlier in the thread, on page 2 I think.

It's based on nothing but my own thoughts too, and that is also where it is going. I'm happy for you to sit around and watch it progress. When it is nearer the stage where I can explain things more clearly with some examples of sentences, even paragraphs of "text" then it will be good. At the moment though it is like you are expecting to be able to get to the loft conversion and look out of the top window of a house that has just had the foundations put in. Patience my friend. Patience :)

sorry Mugz, it's just the way I speak....do you never swear in threads? (I doubt you'll find a single post by me that doesn't include at least one instance of the F-word)

I AM trying to help, rather than just taking my last post and only choosing to notice the one profanity, why don't you look at the constructive advice I gave you.

1. Your rules are not rules.
2. The word order "problem" that rockstar pointed out is not a problem, I'm telling you you do NOT need to create a rule to tackle that.
3.You need to get away from the rules of English, this means you need to totally free yourself from thinking in English then translating into your language.

I'm not an expert Mugz, but I know more about linguistics than you do.

yeah, I agree you do know more than me, it is my project though I do appreciate the input.

I think that you are right that I need to step away from the rules of english, as the word order in french would be different, and other languages, I think my rules need to have some sort of order, but maybe not as much order as traditional languages. I dunno, it is still a work in progress right, I'm just trying to create some sort of temporary rules for how this is going to work now and it will change and develop as more symbols gain their words and I realise more about word orders and other linguistic challenges that will come up, and then I can create some definitive rules.

The reason I initially wanted the thread closed was because all of the pictures and the temp rules are on different pages so someone has to sift through all of the posts so far and all of the constructive helpful posts and all of the banter and lulz posts to find them. I thought it would be better for it to be closed until I had a lot more to post and then I could post it all int the same place. I'm happy for it to stay open and for it to be a place to get constructive criticism as you have given me this morning as it will help me on the journey of development. I will most likely start a new thread when it is finished though which starts of by detailing the rules and has all of the symbols that it will start with and examples of sentences and paragraphs and lots and lots of examples so people will be more able to understand the thought processes I have and how it works.

Oh, and I did take on the positive points, I just only really posted about the profanity, I did say I was going to read some linguistics though too in my prev post.

:D I know you keep saying you're going to read up, but you don't ;)

The more you question yourself throughout this process/project/hobby the more likely it is to succeed.

Again, sorry for swearing and pisstaking, but that's just how i am...I'm finding this whole endevour very funny, but I'm also genuinely finding this interesting, and be happy to help you if (ONCE YOU'VE DONE SOME BACKGROUND READING) you need any help/guidance.

:D

spot on mailmonkey.

will your "language" be capable of profanity, mugz? if not i can't forsee it fulfilling my needs, for one.

sorry Mugz, it's just the way I speak....do you never swear in threads? (I doubt you'll find a single post by me that doesn't include at least one instance of the F-word)

You're allowed to swear. Obviously. But not about fucking linguistics, you disgusting excuse for a human. Fucking swearing about linguistics? I used to think you were awright mate. I guess I was wrong.

:D

It was you that put the cameras in my room watching to see if a linguistics book ever entered my hands or a linguistics website ever comes onto my computer screen, I knew it 8)

I totally agree with the part in bold :)

background reading is being done but I am still taking my own approach, will take the advice and suggestions from the books/websites/posts that I read that are helpful too though :)
