scared the piss out of me when i rented it on vhs when it came out. i repressed the memory and was successful in keeping it down until stumbling upon it some ten years later.

scariest movie ever imo
 
Salvation Boulevard

had marisa tomei and jennifer connelly. but i did not like it. christianity is funny. got it. let's not do any more of these movies.
 
Chinatown - Jack Nicholson was awesome, but I was really disappointed by the climax of the movie.

The Sting - Second viewing, even better this time around if that's possible.

One Upon A Time in the West - Definitely ranks up with the Man With No Name movies - Leone just does Westerns right. (Also, Claudia Cardinale is sexy)

Best Worst Movie - Only interesting if you've seen Troll 2, if you haven't, don't bother. Still interesting to see the kind of people that signed up for movie.

I'll probably give it a second viewing since I was drunk when I watched it the first time, but I never really felt like the movie had come to a satisfying conclusion. I mean, all the way up until the end I was on the edge of my seat waiting for all of these crazy events to finally come full circle, and then Faye Dunaway gets shot in the head and that's it. Maybe I was just expecting too much from it.
 
jack takes a hard L in that one, for sure. it's not what one normally sees.

that scene where polanski cuts jack's nose is still a mystery as to how it was done. looks so real.
 
^didn't realize that was roman himself.

so much talk of Chinatown in here, i decided to watch it today. follows the detective story formula to twist it in the end. the detective can't end up with the girl; his lifestyle and career must go on. but usually they part ways in a different light. reminds me of the weird thing altman did with the end of chandler's The Long Goodbye.

yup, jack makes for a good hardboiled detective. i liked it. not as much as some of the other polanski movies i've seen though.
 
The Skin I Live In with Antonio Banderas. I'm not sure what to make of it...It was well crafted but not something I would see again. Banderas was very good in the role and proved his acting chops, though. It's worth a viewing.
 
Battle Royale - I've known about this movie for ages. Back in middle school a friend of mine was really into all that japanese anime/manga and would always get on my case to read the Battle Royale comic because it was "the most gory, awesome thing ever". I never did read it, but I knew what the general premise was. I was really surprised to see how not gory the movie was especially since it came from the home of some of the most grotesque movies of all time - in fact it was relatively tame. The story was pretty cool though and was an interesting commentary about youth-adult relationships in Japan.

You're Gonna Miss Me - Tried to decide if I liked this one more than The Devil and Daniel Johnson, and I don't think this movie quite made it. Still, very good, especially if you're at all interested in Psychedelic Rock...Roky Erickson practically invented the genre.

Nineteen Eighty-Four - I guess it was a faithful adaptation, but damn what a boring movie. It's far too literary a story to make into an entertaining film.
 
Contagion
My 1st pandemic-type movie so I really have nothing to compare it to.
I was entertained throughout, though.
They gave you little bits and pieces throughout the movie to give you an idea of how the disease started, then the last scene was a flashback to show the events unfold.

Matt Damon is a terrible actor.

watch his reaction to his wife's death and try not to laugh.

you should see the level of analysis robert mckee goes into when looking into chinatown (if you don't know who that is, he's the real guy played by brian cox in adaptation). anyway, the whole repetition of the water theme, along with the supremely demented and perverted nature of the villain (mckee argues he's essentially trying to clone himself by fucking his daughter, and their daughter), i get the impression that even us film buffs tend to actually miss a great deal of what many good stories are trying to say.

this was further emphasised in a recent university first year unit i did (for the credit) on english. it analysed time burton's sleepy hollow, a film which was extremely "meh" to me. read the short story, and analysing how they adapted it, it revealed an underlying quality i couldn't have seen otherwise. with emphasis on how they ADAPTED it for film, it becomes a very interesting work.

motherfucking Donnie Yen!

this is an excellent movie because they do some cool special effects to show how kung fu delivers internal injuries without leaving much of a visible wound on the surface. the speed of impact of certain body parts on certain pressure points send shockwaves of force through a narrow passage into the body (or brain) and sever nerves, small blood veins, or even penetrate and perforate artery/vein walls, etc, while leaving little more than a little red dot on the surface. most kung fu systems are reffered to as "soft style" martial arts not because theyre softies, but because they dont do hard damage to the surface of body tissue. they shut down internal organs and nervous system functions from the inside out (i like the expression, "to put daemons in you").

they touch a little bit (no pun intended) on acupuncture/pressure and how this same knowledge of pressure points around the body can be used defensively or to heal.

yeah, L2R. looking at a film through an appropriate lens certainly can make it more enjoyable!

She'll Have to Go
no dvd release, so i saw a copy ripped off of a TV broadcast. sought out because it stars 1960s anna karina. the movie was terrible. a british french-doveploitiation flick--anna speaks (intentionally) broken english in it. it was going for wile e. coyote and the road runner humor. doesn't work live-action for an hour and a half. she looks good in it. that's all the movie gives her room to do.

Repo Man
once i accidentally watched Repo Men thinking it was the cult classic i'd heard so much about. i quickly could tell it wasn't the movie i wanted, and figured it was a remake. so i was pretty surprised when Repo Man was not about repossessing human organs. but it was much better. definitely had the cult-film feel. they page dr. benway during the hospital scene! referencing a greater work totally gives a movie credit in my book. i'm sure there were tons of other allusions i missed.

The Naked City
old american classics are usually pretty boring. this one was not terrible. reminded me of People on Sunday. no where near as good. a lot of very cool shots of mid-century NYC and a reasonably watchable story. lacks the personality of a movie like People on Sunday though.

the idea of a Naked Lunch film sounded silly to me. but i was pretty impressed with the way cronenberg handled it. good movie.


Switchblade Sisters

i've read that jack hill is actually a terrible film maker and that Spider Baby was just a beautiful coincidence. so i wasn't expecting much from Switchblade Sisters. but it was alright for what it was--just filler. often looked good.
 
The Devil Wears Prada

i could watch it anytime, haven't seen in awhile and first time on bluray... mmm magnifique. meryl streep and emily blunt are so good in it.

Emily: When I am not here... Andrea, you are chained to that desk!
Andy Sachs: But what if I have to...
Emily: What? No! Nothing! One time an assistant left the desk. Oh, because she sliced her hand open with a letter opener, and Miranda missed Lagerfeld just before he was about to board a 17 hour flight to Austrailia. She now works at TV Guide.
Andy Sachs: Man the desk at all times. Got it.
