Zombie apocalypse

Recently a friend of mine has started freezing up every time he takes acid.

It started off happening only occasionally but now happens almost every time.
It also once happened on mushrooms.

About 70-80 minutes into the trip he'll become very rigid and stop reacting to almost everything.

This lasts for about 3 hours after which he'll snap out of it.

At first he can barely remember anything of the trip but after a while recalls small bits including quite insane hallucinations.

Once he sat in a car for 3 hours, once stood on a dance floor, another few times just sat immobile.

It's happened maybe 7 or 8 times now.

During the time he has a very rigid posture and quite pained expression :|

He's taken quite a lot of acid in his life, and up until recently had only gone into Zombie mode twice before.

Acid is a big part of his life and unless we can figure out what's going on we're afraid he's gonna have to stop completely.

I was wondering if anyone has had or heard of a similiar experience or could maybe offer some insight into what's going on?

Thanks:/

Tell him to lay off the acid for an extended period of time, then try it again. If he still turns into frankenstein, time to 'hang up the phone'

Hmm... well, what came to mind when I read your post was a form of schizophrenia known as catatonic schizphrenia... specifically known for causing a person to assume awkward postures for extended periods of time. Does your friend seem normal when not tripping?

i have schizophrenia and i have experienced the frozen state a few times.. it never happened on acid, but i would get very nervous and i thought that if i moved something really bad would happen to me.. so i would sit very still for maybe hours.. i could still snap out of it if someone spoke to me though.. and i could still talk.. your friend may have a more serious problem than myself..

Sounds like what Hunter S. Thompson described as:
"a Hellishingly intense introspective nightmare (...) A few hours or so of catatonic despair."

He is referring to Dr. Gonzo eating "all this acid" and being "in big trouble"

Your friend may have some sort of disorder that is being amplified by the temporary drug-induced psychosis of LSD. I would advise him to steer clear for at least a long while as he could trigger something permanent or get HPPD symptoms.

On a side-note, I have found that dissociatives (especially Ketamine + Nitrous IME) do cause SOME freezing for me and often makes me feel "undead" or "zombie-like"

Lay off the psychedelics for a good long while. Then, test the waters carefully.

Possibly try shrooms/4-AcO-DMT or a 2C-X if LSD still causes problems then and he wants to experience psychedelics.

Is he on any other drugs? Perscription meds?

The one time it happened on a dance floor was acid and ketamine induced. Anything could happen on those 2 though. I've met many K zombies. They tend to sway a bit more.

The symptoms match catatonic schizophrenia in that looking back:
The few motions that he did make could have been copied from people around him
(Copying things around you is a symptom)
The last time it ended he was a bit violent in the time just before coming out of it (normally he isn't at all) I think it's from watching a snake that was quite agitated by bass earlier in the night. (Occasional violent outbursts are listed as a symptom)
One site also lists a history of shyness or awkwardness as one of the things people have long before the condition manifests and that's him too.

Those are all symptoms of catatonic schizophrenia.

That's not to say it's definitely it.

He's never had an episode without psychedelics and seems completely mentally stable.

I was thinking that it does seem similar to how some people look when hypnotized (not all though).
We've also always had music going when it starts but not repetitive and of quite a variety of genres. (Besides the dance floor time)

I'd be keen to try DMT with him, but nervous too, one of the underlying causes is supposed to be psychological. So it would probably either make it better or worse. I've only got access to 5-MeO-DMT here.

Would be nervous to try though in case that aggravates it.

The first time was on shrooms, quite a small dose too I think.

+He's not no prescription meds.

+He did get into meth-cathinone quite a bit in this recent period since just before the Zombie episodes started (but not back when the first one happened several months ago long before they became regular).

He's stopping now (2 weeks so far).

Maybe it will make a difference.

He also does the occasional bit of mdma, and has for quite a long while.

DMT usually induces a brief & pleasurable catatonic state in me. I wanna hit the pipe again, but I just don't wanna move. Also I wouldn't find it odd at all if this were always due to acid and K, but acid alone makes it seem quite odd. K has resulted in me having to remove a lit cigarette from a friends hand because they were unable to smoke it or move it to a proper receptacle. I'd recommend just laying off drugs in general for a bit and perhaps focusing on some sort of goal oriented behavior. Does your friend go to school or have a job or hobby he enjoys? I might be going out on a limb here, but it could be some sort of aberrant form of avoidant personality disorder. If he doesn't deal well with criticism or stressful situations this brief catatonic state could just be a coping mechanism to the stress reaction one has during the onset of effects of LSD

I was once squeezing through a universe made of tubes wondering in a detached way if I left my body in a ditch somewhere by mistake and if there was any hope of getting back to it before something happened to it. Acid and K :)

I got a friend with a burn where he didn't have someone to remove the cigarette.

I was discussing the possibility of it being a coping mechanism with someone just before starting this thread wondering if he maybe wasn't being 100% honest about the things going on in his head during the Zombie periods.

I hear that once we all turned into vampire horses and another time several of my housemate were flying up in the air doing dirty dirty things.

I know that I can't trip that strong on just acid, no matter how much, but people are different.

It could be that he's stressed about being in the same job as time marches on and not chasing dreams and that the recent meth-cathinone use has exacerbated his worries.

Catatonic schizophrenia lists psychological stress as a possible cause among other things.

I once had some similar kind of freezed-up state...

that was a few years back when shrooms were still legal in amsterdam, we took a good dose of a strong strain - what followed was what most would call a horror trip...

10 hours of complete madness (never had shrooms last that long, neither visuals like in this trip), including a complete ego-dissolution into the whole city - and let me tell you amsterdam has some (literally) shitty sides :D it ended in me being in this freezed state, convinced i managed to go insane and would be in this freezed state instead of sleeping for the rest of my life and therefor will never come back from crazyland...

yeah eventually the next morning i started coming down... good times eh :D after that i didn't need anybody to tell me to lay off psychs for a while... never had any problems later on with this...

hope that helps - or at least entertains :D

sorry i may be high, good vibes :)

Once he sat in a car for 3 hours, once stood on a dance floor, another few times just sat immobile.

Sounds like what happened to Syd Barrett in the middle of performing.

As others have already said, tell him to lay off it for a while and see what happens. Certainly sounds like it may be some sort of underlying neurological disorder though. I hope it works out for him.

Just chiming in then on my zombie condition. Here's my psychological history, in a nutshell, pun intended. Childhood - lots of psychological trauma had an abusive father, physically toward my mother, mentally toward me, he committed suicide in 1994, I was happy about it at the time, became more socially withdrawn at school at that point, A student up until then, lost interest in Academia, moved to multi racial school as well, post 1994 South Africa, maybe 2 other more melanin endowed kids at the same school, endured lots of racial abuse, lack of self esteem followed. Received counselling shortly after completing High School, went on SSRI's for a brief period for OCD(compulsive hand washing and depression), decided I was better off without it.

No schizophrenic history in family or schizophrenic like behaviour in daily life, always acid induced and always disappates after the experience.

Thoughts during catatonia, most recently was childhood trauma, when I reacted violently, remember flashes of my dad and mom fighting screaming, attacked a female friend at this point, identified with mom more as a kid and have never exhibited violence toward females, ex-girlfriend's face once changed into my dads, never reacted violently then though. Recollection of thoughts during zombie state is sparse and scattered with blank periods.Thoughts during the state are sometimes comepletely nonsensical, bizarre twisted paranoia, friends being police, paranoid about being a human sacrifice, horses, cows and sheep seem to be common themes twice, wanted to eat people once and locked myself in my room but that was DOB definitely.

I don't deal well with stress or stress related work. Mild depression in daily life.Depression seems to subside for 2 weeks to a month after really good acid trips.

Is there a chance that catatonia will persist after a trip? Are there any case studies where this has happened? 200+ trips later why just recently surfacing?

I have a friend who thinks he's in a coma and the world is a dream he's having. He got permanent schizophrenia after an acid trip. It's been 6 years now I think.

I've told you about him before.

Wait, are you the person being discussed in this thread, Dr. Wobble's friend? Or are you jut chiming in your own similar experience?
