youth culture in your area?

Some interesting answers here, I like how people have started going into their own detail and side stories about their cultures.

despite the lack of addiction our young people in ireland are getting maimed and murdered on a regular basis by vigilantes, who, imho, are addicted to violence. an addiction picked up during the conflict of the last 3 decades of the 20th century. only yesterday we had the spectacle of a mother being ordered to bring her 18 yr old son to vigilantes who shot him in both legs..,..mental

Man its not that bad really honestl, thheres a lot more violence in england and probably america too. There's no gangs here in ireland reall and the IRA/UVF ect don't do nearlly as much damage as they used to + certainly not as much as the kids in england who seem to think stabbing each other is no more than a recreational sport.

Oooohhhhh yeah I forsure do drugs because I'm bored.

This speaks for me (also a highschooler) and most people in my town/school. Located in southeastern Ohio.

I am about the only person I know that has used opiates recreationally more than about 10 times. No im not addicted to anything either.

Alcohol is popular, been popular since about 8th grade which is when I and most my classmates started.

Weed is probably even more popular. Started in 8th grade as well.

Hearing about anyone doing anything besides weed and alcohol at my high school is a rare case, but among the adults here, Meth is very popular always hearing on the news about a new meth lab being discovered.

The youth culture around my area is pretty accepting , most kids start smoking cigarettes / weed and drinking alcohol around 13 and maybe experimenting with other stuff by 18 , where I'm from though which is sydney I started smoking cigarettes at 11 and tried weed by 12 and was drinking fairly regularly by 14 then all the time at 15 , experimenting with lots of drugs like ecstasy , LSD , some sorts of speed , then at 16 got into the needle IV'ing ice all the time , now I'm 17 I drink occasionally smoke weed all the time and life is good .

I'm no longer in the youth category but I'm pretty sure (based on observation) that things havent changed too much around here but maybe the things that are available have.

When I was a youth in the 90s in Australia Cannabis, Amphetamines, Alcohol, LSD, Mushrooms, MDMA, Inhalants, Opiates and Prescription Drugs were all popular among certain sections of the youth demographic. I am not sure if popularity has decreased but I know availability of certain things fluctuates and obviously new things become available on the market. For example in the 90's Heroin was big in my city then in the 2000s its availability dropped off and Meth became the main drug MDMA was there for a long time but during periods when it wasnt ie 08 to the present Meth was still there. I would say that for a lot of young people today it would be the first and perhaps only "hard" drug that they are exposed to apart from prescription meds.

Two big things that seem apparent to me in the last 10 years are increase in the range of RC's around, increase in grey area/legal high substances, also the widening of the range of prescription meds that are popular.

My view is probably a bit skewed because for a long time I worked in an inner city area and the young people I came in contact with were into just about anything that would get them high, but as an example of the rise of prescription stuff I recently overheard two young respectable looking teenagers in a suburban area talking about trading a MP3 player for pills. I immediately assumed they would be talking about MDMA as 5 or 10 years ago pill was just the generic term for any MDMA tablet. I was wrong- turns out they were talking about Oxycontin.

It seems to me that in the past this sort of stuff was more in the realm of regular illicit opiate users or polysubstance users trying something different and then here's these two kids on their way to school getting ready to get on the oxy's on the weekend as casual as you like.

So its nearly the same? At what age do you leave school? We can leave at 16 or do out a level exams for another 2 years
You can leave school when you're 16 if your parents sign for you. You can drop out of school by yourself when you're 18 and kids usually graduate at age 18. I was 17 when my class graduated. Depends on when you started kindergarten.

it is "that bad" in derry. 5 more kids forced to flee this week because of death threats from vigilantes
“He was the fifth young person we helped to leave Derry last week and since last February, we have facilitated the forced departure of 57 young people, almost all of them male.”

the vigilantes also crossed the border into donegal and shot a guy in both legs and arms

what we have is a gang who say they dont like drugs terrorising gangs who do like drugs. its folly to say there are no gangs in ireland. its full of them

I lived in Nogales, AZ until I was eleven. I'm sure there was a pretty big drug scene there, but I didn't start using drugs until I was fifteen. After I moved to rural/suburban Pennsylvania, I developed an interest in drugs and seeked them out. Unfortunately, the area is conservative to a repulsing degree and most kids I knew were either very religious (I was the only atheist I knew up until tenth grade or so), too concerned with school (I was in mainly upper-level classes with a bunch of self-important pricks who freaked out when they discovered I smoked cigarettes), or only into drinking (which I like well enough, but I feel if that's the only drug you use you're really missing out). Weed was kinda popular as well. In about eleventh grade though I was able to find my niche and I realized that the drug scene here is actually very alive and the drugs are all top-notch. It's just very underground and takes some searching. However, I would still say we are definitely a major minority (oxymoron?). That said, I graduated a few years ago, so maybe things have changed.

Fun fact: When I was in high school, it was rumored that salvia was like a "light marijuana." Wouldn't a light marijuana be, like, being in a good mood? I wish somebody had told me that is not the case before I tried it...lol 8o

I started smoking sigarettes at the age of 13 and drinking alcohol at the age of 12.
I never took drugs, I'm 15.
A bit of my friends usually smoke weed, most of them take cheap pills.
Everybody (!) starts drinking alcohol at the age of 12-14. No exceptions. It's usually beer, alcohol coctails, liquor, whiskey, brandy, vodka or something like that. It usually depends of material prosperity of family.
Boys like beer, girls like energy drinks or alcohol coctails. I like liquor and vodka myself.
This is Russia, man :D

I'm from New Zealand, our youth culture is based around two things- binge drinking and cannabis (often because it's easier to get than alcohol for under-18s). I'd say that by age 15 about 60-70% of them would be 'binge-drinkers'- the main thing is that here kids want to drink a lot, the 'point' is to be the person who drinks the most, who gets the most fucked up (just like it was when I was their age), but now it seems to be starting younger (10-13 rather than 12-15, and drinking at 12 made you a fucking badass...like, it was rare to do it 'as a thing' rather than as a once off at that age or younger) and once they're 16-17-18 they've often got a good half decade of drinking under their belts. This results in 16 year old drinking 3L casks of 10% wine/'cocktail mix' or drink an entire bottle of spirits in a night, when they're on the piss.

Cannabis is also pretty fucking common, it's almost universal in a lot of subcultures- something like 80% of people try it before they're 18 and I'd say there would probably be more regular weed smokers than regular drinkers, simply because of the combination of most regular drinkers smoking weed, the ease of availability and the large number of people who smoke but don't drink.

Taking 'pills' ('esctasy' aka mephedrone/methylone/mdpv/4-FA/3-FA/2-FA/6-APB/piperizines very very rarely something called 'M-D-M-A' I think ;)) is also almost worryingly common (must be showing my age or something), particularly as people get into their last couple of years of high school (and into university if you want to include that). I mean it's fucking ridiculous, people who would never take say LSD or a pharm morphine because that's 'too hardcore' happily grind up and snort and 'ecstasy' pills containing god-fucking-knows what!?

I met a 17 year old at this weird-ass party (it was like 2am, so the party was gonna go for another 8-12 hours...we party hard) who was boasting about having snorted 15 of these 'fucking bomb pills' so far that night. I asked if he had any left because I was interested/kinda concerned given how stimulated and wigged out he seemed, despite being coherant and 'with it'...he did and didn't hesitate on pulling out a big baggie with easily 150, if not more, pills ON THE FRONT LAWN OF SOMEONES HOUSE AT A OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD PARTY IN CLEAR VIEW OF THE STREET and the second he opened the bag to pass me one to see the imprint (and try to sell me one) I could smell the stentch of mephedrone. Smelling the bag itself, with all those pills, was almost overpowering. 17 year olds shouldn't be snorting 1.5-3g of mephedrone and drinking 4 bottles of cider on a friday night.

I'm not trying to be preachy, but I look at myself and I know that I was in their position when I was a kid and I made the same decisions at them and guess what- my drug use escalated and now decades on I'm addicted to opiates and have abused a long-list of drugs, some with incredibly destructive consequences. When you're at that stage when you're 17, what the fuck are they going to be up to when they're 21? 25? 30? Going at their current rate I wouldn't be suprised to hear about them shooting up 1/4g shots of meth at 21, a IV-opiate addict by 25 and dead at 30....if you see what I mean?

That was a brilliant first post henry you should be proud of that lol. Welcome to bluelight btw.
I disagree with - what are they going to be doing when their “....” Age though, well in my case anyway. I'm 19 and If I were to list the drugs I've taken it would be between 40 and 50 different kinds. Most of these drugs were taken between the ages of 15 and 17 with the exception of a few.
At 15 I was a pretty heavy drinker. I would finish 15 beers in a few hours then stumble home go to bed, wake up and start drinking spirits the next night (on weekends)
At 17 I was taking meph at least once a week though I'd be taking 2-3g per session if not more, sometimes 7g if I was at a rave or something for any period of time.
By 18 I'd have cut my meph right down but ecstasy I was taking more of, every 3 weeks or so, now at 19 I have cut my drinking wayyyy down, limited my ecstasy consumption to times when I have little money, ecstasy (real ecstasy) is VERY cheap where I come from, or at raves. The last time was about 4-5 weeks ago at a rave in amsterdam, and before that would have been a few months ago . I don't plan on taking ecstasy or meph or any of that for a while,
I think its just a phase everyone goes through that ends at different times for everyone.

Luckily there is no opiates where I come from + cocaine is very low quality (unless you know a guy) + ice is unheard of. So our yóuths don't get addictions like in other countrys

I find this amazing. In the 1 country that cannabis is legal (sort of) the drug problems are a lot less than that of other countries. Moat of the other posts say cannabis at 14 or so and netherlands is 16-18 with x being at 18. I love your country man. I wish I were dutch

If you can't be Dutch, do the next best thing, like me - move there!=D

Where I live (Melbourne, Australia) binge drinking and bong smoking are very common amongst teenagers and a lot of people are getting into it at 14 or 15, sometimes earlier, with an increasing number getting into it around 15/16. When I was in High School around 15/16 was when the kids who had been drinking and smoking for a few years would start taking 'Ecstasy' tablets and perhaps snorting a little speed/cut methamphetamine. Snorting ritalin was relatively common in High School too, especially approaching the age people would start to experiment with other drugs but it seemed to lose a lot of popularity once more people were using harder drugs.

After I left school pretty much everyone I knew was into taking E and binge drinking few nights a week, and most of them smoked weed daily or atleast on weekends. Most of us who worked physical jobs would crack into the speed a bit before work as well. Unfortunately a few years ago pills turned to absolute shit and it has resulted in smoking ice/good quality methamphetamine becoming extremely common place. A lot of people who were even anti drug in High School I have ran into a few years later to find them on the pipe, it really is quite sad.

For the most part amongst youths cannabis and alcohol are the most used drugs, it used to be followed by pills but lately there are more and more people who smoke ice and hardly anyone takes pills anymore, even though quality is improving. I am really not in touch with High School age kids any more so I can't comment if meth (particularly 'ice') use is becoming much more prevalent at that age but I would guess that it is, although due to its high price perhaps not to the same extent as with people who have left school.

It seems a lot of University students take psychedelics, but they tend to be looked down upon by the less educated drug users and amongst my circles of friends their use is quite uncommon, save perhaps the odd shroom trip in season. I am the only one in the circle of friends I grew up with who has ever used opiates very much, but there are certain suburbs that have large heroin problems and I would imagine the experience of someone going to school in one of these suburbs would differ quite a bit from mine.
