I'm asking the fucking questions!
This is purely out of interest, but I'm just wondering what the youth culture surrounding drugs and alcohol is like in your area/country?
Being from belfast in ireland, the youth culture here Is pretty bad when It comes to alcohol and drugs, with a lot of children starting to drink alcohol heavily on the street between the ages of 14-16. I started drinking when I was 13 myself, took my first toke of a spliff when I was 12 or 13 too I can't remember and I had my first ecstasy pill before my 15th birthday.
By the age of 19 I've tried pretty much everything in the book apart from heroin, crystal meth and the hard to get things like 2cx or dmt ect. I would estimate that around 40% of people in the city have tried cannabis by the age of 18 and probably about 5% are regular smokers (maybe more)
Also what is harder to obtain for younguns? Alcohol or drugs?

So, what is the youth of your city like in regards to this?

I'm from North America and it's around the same. Some kids will start smoking pot and drinking around 14. It's really dependent on whether we're talking inner city, suburban or rural.

Inner city kids are the ones I see doing hard drugs from an early age, like 17 and 18, but in a middle class suburban area, the hard drug users are few and far apart.

Belgium. I started smoking (first weed, then tobacco) & drinking @age 15. Xtc, speed@age 16. Benzos, opiates, cocaine@age 18. Psychedelics@age 19

But it's different for everyone.. I know people who started smoking pot @age 12 and xtc @age 14. Also know people who didn't start using any drug until they were 20 and are now heavy cocaine users, for instance.

I'm from New York City, and started drinking pretty heavily right off the bat from the age of fifteen, though I had tried smoking weed at fourteen. I spent three years in highschool smoking weed, drinking liquor, and doing the occaisional cocaine before I graduated to heroin at eighteen, and then the needle at nineteen.

From what I see, nowadays kids are real big into pills. When I lived in a halfway house in DC at the age of twenty, I was shocked to find out how many high schoolers in the nearbye schools around Georgetown had graduated from OxyContin to heroin by 17.

Still being in Highschool, I can answer this pretty well.

Most people start with weed. Some, like me, started very young (13, or 8th grade), but I would say most people start experimenting with it around Freshman year, so 14-15.

The people who started smoking weed early on are usually the ones doing "hard" drugs, as early as 14... These people will have no problem doing coke or popping "ecstasy", but think that LSD is some chemical of death. I know many many many 16 year olds who LOVE meth. Some don't even know they're taking it... but they still love them.

I know one kid who LOVES Blue Dolphins, even though he knows its just meth... his dad did used to make and sell the shit though, so I guess its in his blood :!

Pretty much everyone drinks by 16, a lot begin earlier. I dont really know anyone doing opiates, so IDK about that. Washington has always been a tweaker state..

^ I agree that kids like pills though. They think its safer than the pure version or something lol...

Youth have no culture... they just buy what adults working in the culture industry tell them to buy... or they get reactionary and seek to escape reality through whatever means they have available.

I'm only eighteen but started using when I was 15 because my brother. He gave my sister and I alcohol and weed. My sister at the time was 14. Anyways I got into psychedelics, ecstasy, pills and hard drugs at age 16. I also had a heavy oxycontin addiction up until april or may of last year when I was seventeen. Also now I'm doing heroin well currently managed to stop for now been a month...

I didn't use cause of where I grew up. Shit I lived in a town, the country and city. To be honest I never even really hung around drug users. I was always the druggie within the groups of my friends. The only reason I started using is because of my brother and then I got interested in other drugs and sought them out. Kids around my age are usually just drinking or smoking pot. Yet you can easily find people using other drugs especially raver kids and the odd coke heads here and there.

Most of the people I use hard drugs with are in their 20's and I even have a friend I did heroin with who was 29. I'm like the baby of the group.

^yep. I can relate to that. Here in NYC, I've always been the "hardcore" user within my group of friends. Plenty of the people in my crowd tried heroin, some even shot it, but of everyone I know, only me, and another girl from my highschool, turned into IV drug addicts.

Being a heroin user at a young age can be pretty bizzare, I'm 24 now, but I remember being 19 and shooting coke with this middle aged couple in their van.. Totally surreal. It's actually pretty fucked up when I think about all these 50 year old guys that sold me smack when I was basically a baby, though I guess that's just how it is.

^yeah it is kind of weird using dope at such a young age. Shit I never thought I would use dope or any hardcore drugs period but isn't that always how it is. But yeah I started that thread about turning people on to drugs and/or basically encouraging it and I can't believe how many older people actually don't care if they're using with a young kid. I mean in the end I use so I really don't give a fuck and this benefits me but then again I still wonder what's going through their head or whether they care or not. Yet, again if you're like in your 30's, 40's, 50's whatever and doing dope with an 18 year old kid then you obviously really are too deep into the drugs to even give a fuck.

Like my mother told me she feels better when I'm hanging out with my older friends than even my closer friends who are around my age. This makes me so mad! Its like she'll call me numerous times if I'm out with someone my age and who is my best friend but when I was with my 29 year old friend doing dope she never contacted me once. Its like what the hell, I want to knock some common sense into you. I'm mainly doing drugs well of the hard variety with these older people. Not too many kids around my age fuck with that shit.

Totally true about kids being more likely to use pills than street drugs. I did heroin first but did oxys not long after that and I always preffered the oxy high. The farther away from the inner cities you go the less you will see hard drugs. Of course its never far from a decently sized city on the East Coast so you are never very far. Like you can go south of Philly/Chester and see less and less dope but soon youre going to be running into shit coming north from Baltimore so its really a whole coast flooded with dope.

Id say a lot of kids are turned off by the needle though

Hipsters are starting to overrun my area and I can't stand them. They are total sociopaths and have the drug habits to go along with it.

Among the youth I've interacted with, alcohol and weed are staples; coke (when it can be afforded), meth, and MDMA seem to be the drugs of choice these days. I don't know what young people are thinking. Seems like even drug culture has degenerated somewhat, not that my day was so much better. When I was a teenager XTC was the big thing and people didn't care about the dangers or what it might be cut with.

I'm lucky to now be associated with a conscious sub-culture here on the west coast. All the electronic events I've attended with this niche usually see a lot of psychedelic use but nothing hard.

Seems like its quite the same wherever you go but in a different way if that makes sense jusging by the replys here.
In belfast ireland we don't really have much of a drug addiction problem. Things like heroin, meth, oxy and the like are unheard of here. I'm heavily into trying new drugs and I'm always seeking that new rush just to see what its like, but I've never came across any of that addictive stuff
The youth here as far as I can see is starting to use more and more ecstasy though most would limit it to raves or when they want a cheap night out. A strong 150mg ecstasy pill here can be cheaper than a lot of places.
Coke is readily available, but also does not seem to be a problem, a friend of mine snorts coke around 3-4 times a week and stops whenever he wants to, that's about as far as our addiction problems go here.
The biggest problem we have here is kids drinking, fighting, vandalism, car theft (though not so much now with newer cars being harder to steal) and other anti-social behaviour. Addiction is at a very low level...

There are not very many hard drug users at my high school, and aside from weed there is a huge stigma around drug use. I have to go all the way down to denver to score heroin and everyone I tell that I've done heroin and oxy reacts badly.

where i live all the young people drink every night and hit the clubs and do coke, its likely even worse than where i grew up and i got hooked on H at 15...

I'm from the Netherlands. People who smoke weed usually started around 16-18 (18 being the legal age). Many have tried XTC, but mostly not before they are 18.

I find this amazing. In the 1 country that cannabis is legal (sort of) the drug problems are a lot less than that of other countries. Moat of the other posts say cannabis at 14 or so and netherlands is 16-18 with x being at 18. I love your country man. I wish I were dutch

despite the lack of addiction our young people in ireland are getting maimed and murdered on a regular basis by vigilantes, who, imho, are addicted to violence. an addiction picked up during the conflict of the last 3 decades of the 20th century. only yesterday we had the spectacle of a mother being ordered to bring her 18 yr old son to vigilantes who shot him in both legs..,..mental

This is an interesting thread and an interesting question. And you know, how one answers might depend not only upon his or her country, but what part of the country as well.

I'm from the United States, and New England more specifically, and Connecticut even more specifically. The young people around here are bored; it's what some might describe as being a "suburban nightmare," and so, being from mostly middle class families with perhaps too much time and too much money on their hands, the young people around here take to drug pretty naturally.

I can only speak for myself, but I know that I began smoking weed pretty regularly from the time I was about thirteen or fourteen years old. Strangely enough, I didn't drink alcohol or get drunk until I was in college. My older sister, however, who was a bit wilder and a bit more rebellious, well... she smoked week, drank, sniffed coke and experimented with a lot more drugs in high school than I had. It wasn't until I was in college that I began experimenting with other drugs, mostly pharmaceutical drugs, like adderall, xanax, oxycontin of course...

It seems as though the younger people today are getting into even heavier drugs at even younger ages. (shrugs) But who knows...

I'm more interested in another phenomenon where people my age, about twenty-three years old or so, are just now realizing that their life plans aren't panning out and turning to drugs, often opiates. It seems to be a lot more common than I first imagined. I'm bumping into a lot of schoolmates, friends, and friends-of-friends who seem to have caught a habit.

It's like we were all sleeping... I remember when the September 11th attack occurred, the two wars that followed it, the economy tanking... and through it all I just imagined that graduating from college would be my ticket to a long, happy, successful life. I mean, how could it not be? It's worked this way for so long.

Yeah, well, come to find out that everyone and their mother has a college degree now, and the talk I once overheard of "how bad the economy is" that I thought just didn't apply to me... it applies to me. I think that everyone is just now realizing this, and it's a real sobering blow. It's a bucket of cold water, man, and that warm, opiate blanket is just so, so appealing when all the world around us seems to be going to shit. *sigh*

^Yeah man, that is pretty spot on. I think there's just a lot of apathy and hopelessness going on with our generation. I don't really know what happened to me.. I was pretty dissatisfied with myself as a teenager, but I don't know how that warranted jumping from smoking weed to using heroin when I hit 18. I guess like everyone else I thought I could enjoy the drug without developing a real problem with it, and at the time I really didn't understand the mechanisms of addiction. I do know, that being a dope fiend from a young age has certainly changed my perception on life. I seem to jump between being a cynic and a romantic with no room for moderation. No matter how bad the pain though, I've always had a lust for life.

Yeah to verso's post I lived in connecticut and it was so fucking boring. So many kids got into drugs where I lived and it was just a town near waterbury but yeah there was nothing better to do than get high. Also another town where almost everyone was on drugs was winsted where everyone referred to people there as raggies. Then when I moved to pennsylvania it was kind of the same situation but also since there are so many big cities that sell so many drugs its more prone for young kids to use. I mean if a kid who never did drugs or even had friends who did drugs just woke up one day and said fuck it I'm getting high it would be so easy. The open air market in the cities just makes it really easy to do so.
