Your word of the day.

Was taught to me by a highly intelligent yet terribly dyslectic girl I once loved who as a result of her condition grew obsessed with language extremities such as beatiful yet rarely used words, making it all the more special to me. She also told me about Petrichor-which is the scent of rain on dry earth/ dust after it rained

You learn something new every day. I never knew what petrichor meant. A guy from round here puts out techno under that name, he's pretty good - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTnE7acBTXs

My word for today will be... Japseye.

:sus:

Avizandum - (origins Medieval Latin - Avizare; to consider) term from Scots law; to take time to consider a judgement.

Also happened to be the name of my late puddy cat, god knows where my sister came across that when she was young!

So I guess Iain Duncan Smith is a COCKalorum then.

Come of a complete and utter clueless cunt I recon ;p

One I've promoted before, but I like the word.

Malefactress [mal-uh-fak-tris]
noun
a woman who violates the law or does evil.

[Old French from Latin, from malefacere to do evil]

Deinstitutionalisation - to release from an institute with the intention of reintergrating into the community.

Bonus points for anybody who can come within a reasonable range of guessing the longest word in the English language - without googling obviously. As a hint, I don't think you could actually fit in into a single post ;)

Seeing as nobody ventured a guess I'll just tell you... actually somebody else will cos would take up 190-odd full posts to type out and takes over an hour to say. Get this in Scrabble and you cheated.

(it looks very welsh as it happens, pronounce those 'll's as 'xkcths' and you could be ordering a pint or summat)

Secondary bonus question - what's the most widely-used word used in the world?

^ There was absolutely no chance of me guessing the longest world as literacy isn't my strong point so I just watched the first couple of mins of it, wtf! What dose it mean then??

It's more commonly referred to as 'Titin'... although 'commonly' is probably stretching the meaning of the word somewhat. It's apparently the world longest chain polymer. Dunno what it's used for but it seems it goes in tits.

And a word inspired by Titin...

Titivate.

It's not quite as rude as it sounds but still rather a pleasing word.

Titivate lol I use to titivate myself every time before going out on a Friday night! I'm going to be us ring that a bit more lol

wut?

I was under the impression it was antidisestablishmentarianism?

Well that's my word for the day anyway.:)

It was also one of several of my words for the day yesterday which is kinda what prompted the question. There is a dispute over whether chemical names count as words so it kinda depends who you ask which one is actually the longest. It's a beast of a word either way :D

We've had German and Dutch so how about a bit of Spanish and French? Both used in English too.

Saudade

Ennui

Mean similar things although the former is oddly specific.

Oh yeah, missed that post. If everyone would just stop cheating with the extra words...8)

Donde est a la estacion por favor?

and...

Dos cerveza por favor.

That's about as far as my spanish stretches unfortunately, which is pretty poor given that we have a house in Mallorca. Everytime I go there I learn a bit and it's all forgottenn by the timme I next visit. Getting my ass on a spanish course as soon as my head is a bit more straight.

And I was under the impression it was floccinaucinihilipilification - the action or habit of estimating something as worthless. 29 letters. One more than antidisestablishmentarianism.

I've always wanted to use floccinaucinihilipilification in a sentence. Verbally not textually. It seems like it could be so easily done but is a bugger to recall on cue.

Newsnight (I think it was) t'other night was littered with antidisestablishmentarianisms (that equals floccinaucinihilipilification I do believe making it a tie :p). I'm more pro-disestablishmentarianism myself.
